30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #276 GI Joe and the Transformers: Ashes, Ashes - Part 4: At the Joes' HQ, Mainframe manages to reactivate Bumblebee's brain module. He contacts Hawk, who is still moping about Larkin, to tell him. Meanwhile, Mindbender is awoken by the sound of Station Alpha taking off and he contacts Serpentor to warn him the Earth is in danger. Serpentor forms an alliance with the Autobots to try and save the world. Bugged: Megatron sends the Insecticons to eavesdrop on Shockwave but they are spotted by Starscream. Starscream swats them with his rustbug hoop but allows them to leave with the information that Shockwave will be out alone tomorrow, knowing this will lead to him walking into an encounter with Megatron. Elsewhere, Transformation apologises that Collected Comics 16 doesn't contain the next part of Target 2006 as advertised because the pages were lost on the way to the printers; there's a free Micromaster button badge taped to the front cover; Slingshot and Sludge feature in the A-Z; and on the letters' page, Bonjax Taaachner reveals Cybertronian numbers from one to six go Vox, Hoyt, Poyt, Bloto, Iggy and Gwert.

I still have that badge! Starscream swats them with his rustbug hoop Hmmm. No, I can't really think of anything to say in defence of this story. Martin

Ah, I see. Right. I thought it would have been plugging one of the new ones. Random choice... I have the badge as well, in fact it's still taped to the front of the issue.

Hmmm. No, I can't really think of anything to say in defence of this story. The Insecticons are oddly cartoon style and not really comic. The idea's good - Starscream being duplicitous and orchestrating things so his two biggest obstacles encounter each other, but the actual story isn't much cop.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #277 GI Joe and the Transformers: ...All Fall Down - Part 1: The Autobots, the Joes and Cobra handily recap the story so far as Alpha begins to cause tremors while burrowing underground. Shockwave gets excited by the prospect of the Earth dying. Bombshell is tasked with getting rid of Dr Mindbender, but instead finds himself forcibly transformed to insect size by a shot from the Baroness. The pair escape with him in a Viper. Internal Affairs: Megatron and Shockwave fight, devastating Memphis Airport in the process. Starscream observes from the air and anonymously reports the battle to the Autobots, who suspect a setup. Starscream joins the other Decepticons and he and Soundwave pronounce themselves joint leaders, both internally promising to betray the other. The Autobots arrive in Memphis and Megatron and Shockwave try to summon their troops, only to be told they have both been usurped. They flee together, opting to join forces while they work out what to do next. Elsewhere, Transformation warns readers to look out for the Micromaster competition token printed on page 23; Smokescreen and Snarl feature in the A-Z; Mega-Brain is defeated when he realises he's being looked at by thousands of Transformers readers; and on the letters' page, Chris Belton of Nottingham asks, "Is Prowl cool, or what?" and demands the Autobot strategist take over as leader.

The art in the UK strip in this issue is interesting, Starscream has the larger eyes he has in early stuff like the ladybird books.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #278 GI Joe and the Transformers: ...All Fall Down - Part 2: At Fort Lewis, Ratchet finds the Joes have rebuilt Bumblebee. Dr Mindbender and the Baroness arrive, and Mainframe learns the secret of how manipulating Bombshell's mind probe will cause him to transform. Hawk is still moping and decides to call Serpentor to ask what to do next. Serpentor recommends using deadly force to destroy Alpha, even at the cost of human lives. The House That Wheeljack Built: Wheeljack proudly unveils the new Autobot Earthbase. Prowl asks about its defenses and Wheeljack activates them. He the announces the defences can only be shut off from inside the base, not realising all the Autobots are outside the base. Prowl is forced to brave the defences, including acid bats and alien tentacles, to reach the off switch. Elsewhere, Transformation details a signing tour currently underway by the creators of Knights of Pendragon including stops as exciting as the Bexleyheath Shopping Centre; Soundwave and Starscream feature in the A-Z; GI Joe The Action Force begin new story Cut and Freeze Dried; Colin returns from Mars to confront a dinosaur; and on the letters' page, Andrew Dornan of Fareham asks why the A-Z only features Transformers from Transformers Universe, to which Hi-Test replies that the UK comic is using the original four issue version of Universe that has more characters than the book, but in due course the Headmasters, Powermasters, Targetmasters and Seacons will appear.

Mainframe learns the secret of how manipulating Bombshell's mind probe will cause him to transform. I love this kind of thing. Or even 'The House That Wheeljack Built'? After capturing Galvatron, defusing Megatron's greenhouse bomb, thwarting his time-travel plot and now this, 1990 is definitely a good year for Prowl. Martin

More Earthforce slapstick pish. Young Ralph was only weeks from dropping the title at this point. Only loyalty was keeping him going.

It does?? What characters were missed out? Were they covered in the IDW classics reprint a few years back? And hooray, Andy Dornan of early TMUK note.
