I'm sure the Constructicons explanation is Nucleon. Desert Island Risks was printed April 1990 and Eye of the Storm was June 1990 in the US, so if it wasn't for the GI Joe reprint those stories would only have been a couple of months apart over here. Furman would have been writing the nucleon stuff around the time he wrote Desert Island.

Though it was stupid of the Autobots not to confiscate their Pretender shells or check whether any of their weapons had radio-controlled magnetic levitation capabilities. Martin I'm sure the story says it was the power of his mind not some sort of techno babble explanation.

The story would have worked even better if the guys in the prison were just the shells - and the actual inner robots then broke in, stabbed Inferno and freed them. Would explain why they were so quiet and actually have used the Pretender gimmick for something useful for once.

How do we know they weren't just the shells? Did it say?

I think the robot modes of most Pretenders were completely obsolete at this point.
In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if all the inner robots were still on Cybertron sitting at home watching TV/eating crisps etc. whilst just radio controlling their shells to do all the hard work in the stories.
Which would be why we never saw them much.

What crisps do the Pretenders like?
Yes, Pretender Monster Munch, but also
Quaveriders. Iceskips. French Wildfries. Thunderwingles. Autobotsits.
And of course...
Doubleheady salted metal crisps.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #283 Kings of the Wild Frontier - Part 2: The Triggerbots chase off the riders and put their feet up for the evening with the child's family, who explain they are peaceful farmers being lent on by Zargon officials after access to the natural spring on their land. The Triggerbots make to leave, but are persuaded to stay the night. Meanwhile, Thunderwing uses a mind leech to extract information from Nightbeat and Hosehead about the current Autobot mission. He learns there is a menace threatening all Transformers, but before Siren reveals the name, Ruckus informs him that they have arrived at Cheyne. The Decepticons depart, Thunderwing intent on finding and possessing the Matrix. Manoeuvres! Octane raids a gas station and causes mayhem on the roads before being led onto an army firing range by a mysterious Porsche. He calls Astrotrain and Blitzwing for help and explains he can't join the fight because he is carrying the fuel he stole from the gas station. His comrades help him out until they realise the problem is of his own making and they desert him. The Porsche, who turns out to be Jazz, watches from a hilltop and tells Octane he needed teaching a lesson. Elsewhere, there's a competition to win a Peugeot Trail 24 mountain bike in conjunction with Monster Munch, who are offering amazing fluorescent Spokey Dokies free in special packs this summer; Thundercracker and Thrust become the first black and white additions to the A-Z; Smarties advertise their new white Smarties and a chance to win 'rotator tube' puzzles with special packs; in the cover corner box Optimus tussels with a mysterious arm; and on the letters' page, Adam Cheshire of Portsmouth asks what the new Micromaster Optimus Prime he's found with a trailer and cab that transform into two "flying things" is. Unhelpfully, Dreadwind replies it is obviously a toy from a parallel dimension.

I can only assume that's Action Master Prime, but Dreadwind being the idiot he is didn't realise.
Anyway, more importantly...
Spokey Dokies and white Smarties. What a week.

Yes, I think that was the last we saw of Octane, except possibly in a body pile of dead Combaticons in a late issue of G2.
If I recall rightly, readers complained so much about that A-Z being black and white that they reprinted it later on in colour.
