Good cover this, but a bit iffy because Prime looks like he's being suffocated by his own face plate.

Interesting though that Hasbro UK were set on going to at least 1995 without support from Hasbro US. That's either a bold gamble on their part, or that toy sales were still pretty healthy over here.
Gosh. Imagine a Hasbro UK these days that worked out how to do its own toy ranges...

Wonderful cover.
Just a shame the barcode is an eyesore.
It also gives away the story a bit too.

I was a big fan of Havoc and Meltdown though sadly both titles were very short lived! -Ralph Havoc was always doomed to die - it was the tester for Overkill. Meltdown I'm not so sure, Strip had been and gone by this point hadn't it?

Yes, Strip was 30 years ago last year. Still got all mine, loved that one.

30 Years Ago This Fortnight: Issue #322On The Edge of Extinction - Part 4: As the evil within the Matrix battles Unicron, Prime recognises he must try to destroy them both. Unicron releases a furious blast of energy that destroys Thunderwing and sends shock waves across Cybertron. Prime sees the Matrix and tries to reach for it, first releasing Hi-Q so he can find safety. Unicron transforms to planet mode and begins to devour Cybertron. Blackrock provokes Circuit Breaker into almost killing herself by releasing all her energy into a blast directed at Unicron. Just as she does this, Prime flies into the planet's maw and manages to release the goodness left in the Matrix. Unicron explodes, showering the remaining onlookers in debris. Sometime later, Battletrap and Runabout discuss their need to get back to causing trouble. Runabout investigates a crack in the ground and is dragged into the dark by a clawed hand. Hidden, Hi-Q sees this happen. Machine Man 2020 - Rime of the Ancient Wrecker - Part 1: Previously printed in #35. Elsewhere, Transformation gives over the sidebar to announcing the imminent return of Death's Head; Kup's entry in the A-Z claims he's the Falstaff to Hot Rod's Prince Hal; Combat Kate arrives in time to save Colin by revealing the Gigglies are actually robots; there's the last part of the enormous three part poster; and on the letters' page, Colin Walsh of Dublin suggests more voice talent for the next Transformers movie, including Leonard Nimoy for Spockwave.

How exciting to hear of the return of Death's Head. -Ralph As an aside the appearance of DHII in Overkill along with the reversal of the absolutely moronic decision to excise the parts with the Marvel US guest stars saved that title. I was toying with binning it at the time, as Gary Erskine had left Warheads by that point and the Geoff art on Hell's Angel and Digitek were the only things keeping me going - jeebus Pendragon 2 was absolute shite. What a conclusion, and excising that last page and you have an ending to the TF mythos, very similar in tone to what we would get a couple of years later with G2 and squarely in the camp of the ending of TF:TM as well. Geoff did leave the Marvel TF books on a high. Imagine though, if he'd been able to do this issue painted a la DH: The Body in Question...

Yes! I'd have much preferred the comic to finish here too (minus the last page). I'd never say no to more TF comics (especially in those hard times) but Edge Of Extinction would have made a much more satisfying close than issue 80, which felt like an episide of the cartoon where the Autobots had just sent the baddies running after thwarting their latest evil scheme. Would have been nice to see them finish as one and at peace. It even closes with'the blurb.' (We have ATAP as the real ending anyway)

30 Years Ago This Fortnight: Issue #323Still Life - Part 1: Cybertron lays in ruins. Some of the survivors surround the remains of Optimus Prime, kept alive by the Matrix. As he dies, he tries to give Prowl a message for Grimlock, which Prowl interprets as Prime passing the mantle of leadership to the Dinobot leader. Elsewhere, Hi-Q makes a startling realisation as he tries to escape the beast he saw destroy Runabout. Prowl talks to Grimlock, who is more concerned with his own goals than leading the Autobots. Krok and Bludgeon quietly consider their options. Grimlock explains to the Dinobots that Primus was wrong and there must always be a balance of good and evil, but then suddenly locks up and can't move. Hi-Q appears in front of him, shouting for help... Machine Man 2020 - Rime of the Ancient Wrecker - Part 2: Previously printed in #36. Elsewhere, Transformation gets very excited that next issue the results of the 'Draw a Transformers' competition will be announced; Grotusque features in the A-Z; Colin triumphs by overcoming the Amazing Dave with a smelly sock; and on the letters' page, Arfon J Rees of Swansea points out the images of the Ark and Autobot shuttle are mixed up on page 26 of this year's annual, while Blaster thinks that neither are actually the Ark and both are shuttles.

I haven't got the annual out to check, but I think we talked about this in the best ships thread. I think one is a version of the Ark but doesn't look like the conventional appearance.

The one labelled the Ark was the shuttle from the Movie.
The one labelled a shuttle was the Ark from the cartoon, but a shuttle in the comic (Space Pirates, Time Wars).
So Blaster was right in comic terms, Mr Rees was right in cartoon terms, and the feature in the annual was just wrong. As were a couple of comic stories and covers that mis-drew the Ark as a Movie shuttle.

Yes, Andy Wildman in his B&W stuff did the movie shuttle a couple of times iirc.

There was an "Assault on the Ark!" cover too, that had the movie shuttle.
I wonder what happened to the Ark in UK future continuity. It was still crashed in "Ark Duty", but that was the last time we saw it, right?

30 Years Ago This Fortnight: Issue #324Still Life - Part 2: The Dinobots battle the monsters chasing Hi-Q to protect Grimlock. Meanwhile, Shockwave and Starscream attempt to repair the Ark because Shockwave thinks it's still the best ship on Cybertron. A shadowy figure watches them in the darkness. As the battle with the monsters continues, Hi-Q sees Grimlock go into a chrysalis form. He sees a huge amount of energy surround the Dinobot leader and uses his Powermaster abilities to push him through the transformation. Grimlock emerges from his cocoon renewed and resplendent, but unable to transform. Hi-Q then claims the process has caused him to become Optimus Prime. Machine Man 2020 - Rime of the Ancient Wrecker - Part 3: Previously printed in #37. Elsewhere, Transformation reads the tea leaves and announces there will be a competition in November to win one of five Overlord toys along with the latest video release from Abbey Entertainments; Horri-Bull features in the A-Z; Colin discovers that Mutant Master is actually him; one Martin McV of Bristol wins a runner up prize in the Design-a-Transformer competition; and on the letters' page, a printing error means Andrew Hayden's picture of Blaster is coloured like Twincast and the dreaded number 332 appears for the first time with the warning that whatever happens after that point, there will be no new Transformers stories...

The competition announcement is a bit of a mess really. It announces Peter Campbell as the winner, then congratulates Paul in the text instead on winning a set of triple changers, but doesn't say what the runner up prizes are.
So what did Martin of Bristol win? and more importantly, what was his design?

I have memory of winning a Classic Hero, either Wheeljack or Sunstreaker, I'm not sure, around this time, but I didn't design a Transformer, I sent in a picture of Unicron attacking Cybertron, as I'd read US #75 a few months before it was printed in the UK comic, so I was showing off my advance knowledge of what was going to happen.

No it wasn't! We've already discussed Martin's inability to remember his appearance in Stock Exchange a while ago. 30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #307In the National Interest - Part 4: Reprinted from #78 (all eleven pages) Eye of the Storm - Part 2: While Optimus listens to Nightbeat's theories, Unicron draws Galvatron back into his grasp. However, Galvatron believes he can serve his own needs. On the Ark, Kup tries to stop Grimlock taking the bodies of the Dinobots but is knocked out for his trouble. Grimlock takes his deactivated friends. Elsewhere, Transformation promises glossy covers, free gifts and a higher page count coming with issue #309; Colin falls out of a tenth floor window; Blaster promises a GI Joe Special in the summer to wrap up the unfinished Cobra civil war storyline; and in Comic Exchange, one Martin McV of Bristol would like some comics in exchange for some other comics.
