Yeah, Tech Specs are really what kept me interested in the toys. I remember wandering into the Local Woolies and reading the descriptions of the characters on the back of the box. That's what got me hooked on the damned things.
Somehow "Will not stop in his pursuit of the Decepticons!" doesn't quite cut it...

Dunno. But that's the kind of thing they put on the box during the movie era, or sommat. I forget who. On account of it being forgettable.

The box art made the jets look like different robots, and I think I recall the first UK annual had a name-the-robot puzzle feature (uncoloured) with correct and wrong answers to which Strike Plane head belonged to which name. On the box art, Skywarp was crouched and looked like the sneaky one, Starscream looked full of himself, and Thundercracker looked unenthusiastic. I assume Bob based their characters on the box art.

Having looked at the UK comic fact files in this thread, I thought it worth a small addendum to say that Omega Supreme's fact file in issue 70 is the first I've come across that really deviates from the universe entry. Not only does it use different, more toy accurate, artwork, but the profile is adapted from the original with a lot of rewording to shorten it. It's the only version of Omega's bio that specifically states he was designed by Grapple on Earth, to tie in with Command Performances being printed in that issue.

So! Snarler's rank of 3. What's that all about then?
I can think of Blot, Twintwist, Slag, Sludge and now Outback with rank 4. But 3? When he's often portrayed in a leadership role? Das macht keinen Sinn!

I... I don't understand what that means....
ALSO, allowing only ONE TECHSPECS POINT, who's Techspecs value would you alter, up or down? Naturally, I'd want to make Prowl's intelligence 10. He deserves it. Soundwave too. Also Jazz deserves a courage of 10, and Sludge's strength up to 10 'n'all. I would actually like some alteration to the ranks, introducing a more common rank of 4 for such things as 'demolition' (sorry Brawn), that way characters like Blot and Frenzy could have a rank of 3, indicating little or no responsibility for them.
(Yes I may be overthinking this too much, BUT I LOVE TECHSPECS!!!!)

The tech-specs go a bit crazy when the Movie comes along.
Wouldn't you expect Hot Rod to have courage 10?
Wouldn't you expect Blurr to have speed 10?
Wouldn't you expect Kup to have rank 5, being a Warrior?
Wouldn't you expect the tech-specs of Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Cyclonus and Scourge to be pretty much the same for the Targetmaster and non-Targetmaster, except perhaps for greater firepower for the Targetmaster?
Wouldn't you expect all Cyclonus's ratings to be somewhere between 1 and 10?
Check out the actual ratings on the specs:
| Strength | Intelligence | Speed | Endurance | Rank | Courage | Firepower | Skill | Blurr | 7 | 8 | 10 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 7 | 5 | Blurr (TM) | 5 | 7 | 7 | 4 | 5 | 9 | 7 | 7 | Cyclonus | 8 | 8 | 9 | 8 | 9 | 9 | 8 | 8 | Cyclonus (TM) | 9 | 9 | 11 | 6 | 7 | 11 | 5 | 6 | Galvatron | 10 | 9 | 9 | 10 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 10 | Hot Rod | 10 | 10 | 9 | 10 | 10 | 7 | 10 | 10 | Hot Rod (TM) | 6 | 5 | 6 | 8 | 5 | 10 | 7 | 6 | Kup | 9 | 7 | 6 | 9 | 8 | 9 | 6 | 8 | Kup (TM) | 8 | 5 | 2 | 9 | 5 | 10 | 5 | 8 | Rodimus Prime | 10 | 10 | 9 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 8 | 10 | Scourge | 8 | 8 | 9 | 8 | 8 | 9 | 8 | 8 | Scourge (TM) | 7 | 9 | 6 | 6 | 8 | 8 | 7 | 7 | Ultra Magnus | 9 | 9 | 6 | 8 | 8 | 9 | 6 | 8 | Wreck-Gar | 8 | 6 | 6 | 10 | 7 | 9 | 7 | 7 |

For Blurr, I think we have to go with his original specs rather than the Targetmaster, on account of the speed.
For Cyclonus, we also go with the original as you can't have ratings of 11.
For Hot Rod, we go with the Targetmaster, as his original specs are crazy, and the Targetmaster has courage 10 rather than 7.
For Kup, I'd go with the Targetmaster as it has the rank of a Warrior.
For Scourge, I'd go with the original as ratings such as endurance are too low on the Targetmaster.
Maybe Ultra Magnus should have Hot Rod's original ratings.

Gods those Techspecs just make a mockery out of Techspecs. Take Hot Rod, a character I hate at the best of times- Strength 10 Intelligence 10, Speed 9 etc, what the hell? Ridiculous. But then, his courage is just a 7, when one would, even if one disliked the character, be allowed to guess his courage at obviously a 10! His Targetmaster techspecs kinda corrects that... They're all over the place. They're a joke.
I'm actually offended by them.

I wonder what the significance of the spikes between the ratings is. I mean, Cyclonus has Rank 7, and then goes all the way down to 2 before skyrocketing to 11 for Courage. Are there invisible tech specs we're not allowed to know?

What would the secret invisible techspecs be?! Invisibility, perhaps? Martin So Mirage would have 10, and everyone else would have zero? Or or or should it be subterfuge? We could also have guile. And marksmanship. And invulnerability. And observation. And self-confidence. And sense-of-humour. And assertiveness. And multi-tasking. And creativity. And leadership. And reliability. And hand-to-hand fighting skill. And handwriting. And and and ANYTHING!!!!!
