He had rank 9 in all his G1 incarnations: 1984, 1990 (Classic Hero) and 1991 (Action Master). By contrast, Jazz was sometimes an 8 and sometimes a 6. Budiansky never suggested they were any kind of joint second-in-command in his stories. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary defines "right-hand man" as (you'll like this) "a soldier holding a position of responsibility or command on the right of a troop of horse", but a more modern definition ( www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/right-hand%20man) is "a very important assistant who helps someone do a job". Excellent. Martin's eloquent genius has settled it. Prowl is second in command, Jazz is Optimus' right-hand-man and Earth assistor, and Trailbreaker's strength should be 8. Job done.
Nomination two:
Prowl, Skids and Soundwave's intelligence should be 10.
Bob seemed strangely restrictive with his Intelligence scores, only giving 10s to Optimus, Megatron and Shockwave. It wasn't until Preceptor that we got another 10. And then Skydive got a 10.
Prowl, Skids and Soundwave are well renowned for being really really smart. Let's share out the Intelligence love.

Pffft. You can't deny the holy UK comic stated Prowl and Jazz are joint seconds. Numbers on a text spec are numbers on a tech spec; as said, if you want to go purely on numbers then Jetfire outranks Prowl. What the Who's Who did was harmonise the various media instead of picking one particular strand.

Personally I agree that the tech-specs are not infallible, but in the case of Prowl and Jazz they do reflect the Marvel comic stories better than the Who's Who does. In making them joint second-in-command the creator of the WW appeared to be trying to reconcile Jazz's lower rank in the tech-specs and comic stories with his prominence in commercials, cartoons and stories like 'Man of Iron'. But it was clear in both Budiansky and Furman stories (like Dinobot Hunt, Target: 2006 and Earthforce) that Prowl was in a position of greater authority. Heck, in some Furman stories like those featuring the Pretender Classics, Bumblebee appears to be more in charge. Prowl isn't above all other Autobots. Grimlock (a fellow rank 9) takes charge above Prowl in Prime's absence, and other leaders like Emirate Xaaron, Fortress Maximus and maybe even Countdown may be higher in the line of succession. But Jazz isn't his equal anywhere in Marvel continuity but in the Who's Who. Martin |
