I don't think Bob Budiansky can be held responsible for the G2 tech-specs. Martin Oh no absolutely not! That is why- I DEMAND AN EXPLANATION FROM G2 LOVERS!

And yes, good points about ranks altering over time.
And I think you nailed it above, Pinwig, with your description of Ultra Magnus and Galvatron's Techspecs.

In G2, Rapido (10) outranks Optimus Prime (9) what Well I'm assuming they've taken an average here, considering that Optimus doesn't spend all of his time being alive. So this is reasonable.

So... you loose rank when you die? You rank is directly related to your active service...?

Well when he's dead he's not really a very active leader, so, you know...

8 is off for Magnus, but his function is given as city commander in his tech spec, which is at odds with the New Leader bit he got promoted as. A New Leader can command a city. -Ralph

But what I meant was that I think the bios for those characters started as one thing and became something else. Magnus isn't called a leader in his tech spec but he was in advertising by the time the toy came out. It's almost like Budianski asked what Magnus was to define him, and got told he's the commander of Autobot city without any other reference to the rest of his role in the film.

I'd be interested in seeing a distribution of ranks, split by Autobot and Decepticon. Curious to see if one is flatter than the other, or more hierarchical, or even top-heavy.

If they did this today I'd assume it was a way of avoiding spoilers, like the Rey toys released without a lightsaber. Do we know if the Magnus toy emerged from the movie or if that redeco was already planned and just got incorporated into the movie?

Re. Ultra Magnus tech Specs - I always thought that they were accurate leading up to the Movie - he was City Commander until Optimus Primes death. It might have made more sense (toy wise) if after the Movie he regained that role - but the job went to Blaster (probably due to the planned scenes of him and the others that remained on Earth after the A-listers & Perceptor went to battle Unicron). Galvatrons on the other hand - perhaps (aside from the function) the characterisation fits more with TFUK.

Yes this would be very interesting. From my studies on the subject, ranks appear to be very function orientated. 5 Warrior, 6 Specialist etc. I think, however, for the Decepticons, it would have more interesting for their ranks to be based more on success, strength, power etc.

Ooh. A proper database of all the tech spec numbers... Think of the graphs you could make with that.
Online. Configurable queries. I could do that you know. I wrote the code for my old football site that has twenty years of match stats and that has dozens of different searches. Summer holiday job.

When I was playing with a graph database, Neo4J, a few years ago I used Transformers as a data set to play with. Not tech specs, more about alt-modes, factions and colour schemes, but it does strike me as a great use case for a graph DB!
