I'm 22 stars in and its blowing my mind. What Nintendo have done with the gravity mechanic is astounding.

The last Mario game I played is M64 (well, apart from Mario DS on my cousin's handheld). How does Galaxy compare?

The analogy going around which I agree with is that if Mario 64 is Super Mario Bros. then Galaxy is Super Mario Brothers 3. i.e. it takes and ground breaking formula and perfects it.
Amusingly using the same logic that makes Super Mario Sunshine = Super Mario Bros 2. ie a great a game in its own right but viewed as the red-haired step- child of the series.
Also it means the next 3D Mario will be the equivalent of Super Mario World!

Not played this yet, but from what I hear it combines the best elements of the previous two 3D Mario games.

I'll get round to buying this game when I've completed Zelda: Twilight Princess. What I have heard though is that its better than Super Mario 64 which is my favourite Mario game of all time. After the washout that was Sunshine I'm hoping that they are at least half right.

My preorder from tgrav has not arrived and they're listing it as out of stock. Hurrumph!
Do you feel the need to go and collect the missing stars like in SM64 or are you glad to be done with the game and looking for an excuse to put it down like SMS??

You definitely want to get all the stars? I'm only fighting the final boss at 60 stars as you can't do some of the later stars until you do that. Otherwise I'd have waited until I had all 120 (or done it once at 119 to see the difference in the endings).
And once I get 120 I'm doing it all again ....
(Big Fuck Off Spoiler for after you get 120 stars:)
EDIT: Hmmm removed the spoiler as I can't find an adequate way to hide it.

One of the galaxy's you visit. It's filled with toys! And the star I was talking about: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECfQmBbzvccThis guy is a fucking sadest! You only need 100 coins and he got all 150! EDIT: Grrr can't get the youtube embedding to work.

Saddest? That's a bit unfair I'm guessing you mean sadist, or indeed masochist as somebody who enjoys the agony of 60,000 attempts to get that last bloody line of coins. A sadist would enjoy making someone else collect them while he filmed it, which I suppose is also plausible. STAR GET! Oh yes. -Nick

Due to other stuff, the first week of having this I only played briefly (I got the first star) but have had a proper go these past two days.
I love it! I'm not sure how many stars I've got but I've just beat bowser for the first time (proper bowser, not baby). I seem to keep playing for each star on a course rather than think 'oh I've got enough to unlock that galaxy, I'll move on.." because the courses are just that much fun and I'm just enjoying it that much. I'm not saying I'll have got to the end and collected all the stars, but it looks like I'll have got a fair amount of them. In any case I'll definetly be going trying to get them all at some point.

Well it looks like Cullen has surpassed my Mario star-score.
These things happen!
I'm really enjoying it, finding it much slower going now (I'm about 94-5) but still great. Those Daredevil comets are bastards.

I'm on 112 now. Only one more purple coin challenge to do. The one on Dreadnought was quite tricky.

I've got 19 stars left to go. I have to say, I'm kinda losing interest in these challenges. Haven't played it in a while.
Although, the thought of Luigi drives me onwards.

Man, i still haven't gathered the strength to get the original 120. I just haven't had the time. Last time i played i spent so long on 'Luigi's secret coins' or whatever, that i was quite scunnered with it. Might have a cheeky go tonight, since the Missus is working late.

Got up the the 119 mark last night. All i need to do now is feed the Hungry Luma at the gate portal, and I'll have the mystical 120.
Complete swine levels: Luigi's Secret Coins and the Dreadnought Trash-bomb one. Perseverance!

Yeah the Dreadnought trash bomb was a bitch. Loved Luigi's Purple Coins as it vindicates my whole play style for the Mario games which is balls-to-the-wall, don't-stop-until-your-dead constant running and jumping. That level was loads of fun.
79 stars on second play through. Done everything up to Freeze-Flame.

Got it during Christmas, but only just started playing it properly. Im only 5 stars in but I already love it. Which is a relief as I seem to be the only Mario fan on the planet who was bored senseless by Mario64 causing me not to buy a mario platformer since. It was just so open and expansive and maybe it picked up but I played it for a while. Enemies would plod around had hardly be a threat and if hey were you could just walk around them. Anyway this is better, fees like a proper platform game made in the 3D.

I r loving SMG. 12 stars in.
What's weird is that I have the apparant complete set of stars on some of the galaxies, but it hasn't said Galaxy Complete like it did on some others. I'm guessing I'll be returning at some point.
DUN DUN DURRRR!!!
(edit... just after posting this I go to play and get introduced to the comets weeeee...)
(edit 2... now 36 stars in. I'm finding this game too easy, but I am only in the 3rd galaxy)

Stom, just wait for Luigi's secret coins level.
You will never say 'bastard' more than when playing this level.
