I watched the first 5 Fast And Furious films back to back before the sixth came out. The evolution of the series is truly remarkable. the first and sixth films exist in totally different worlds. And how many series not only survive a direct to DVD instalment but go on the become far bigger afterwards?
The sheer madness of the trailer made me very happy.

1. PADDINGTON 2. Big Hero 6 3. The Tale of Princess Kaguya (English Dub) - A wonderful and very stylish film. A great story driven by the characters although it starts to drag a bit midway. Fortunately the film then decides to go bat-crap craaaaaaaaaaaazy which was just amazing. Will definitely track down the original Japanese folk legend this is based on for a read.
WARNING FOR BURNS: THIS FILM WAS PROCEEDED BY A *MOOMIN* TRAILER! AVOID! AVOID!
4. Birdman 5. Project Almanac 6. Selma 7. Ex Machina 8. Kingsmen 9. Suite Française 10. X + Y 11. Run All Night 12. Chappie 13. Focus 14. Jupiter Ascending 15. Shaun the Sheep

1. Paddington 2. Princess Kaguya (supposed to be a subbed version, ended up a dub due to comedy of errors. Tale of woe can be found elsewhere): Wonderful film. Startlingly different animation style which veers between elements of japanese woodblock prints, toward almost impressionistic elements at times, but makes it work. Beautiful and very subtle use of colour as well, using different colour palettes and types of colouring within the storytelling. Has a rather wonderful satirical view of medieval japan in places (Miyasaki-sensei was clearly not the only feminist in Studio Ghibli by a long chalk) and some wonderful folkloric flights in the second half. Feels in places like Isao Takahata really spreading his wings and stepping out from Miyasaki's shadow. If we can expect things like this from a Ghibli with Takahata as their big gun then I think they are well-placed for the future. 3. Big Hero 6 4. Shaun the Sheep 5. Kingsman 6. The Gunman 7. The Hobbit

1: Shaun the Sheep Movie. 2: The Old Vic’s ‘The Crucible’. 3: Whiplash. 4: The Theory of Everything. 5: Big Hero 6. 6: The Lego Movie (BAFTA re-release). 7: Globe on Screen: The Duchess of Malfi. 8: The Sound of Music (re-release): Everyone bangs on about the songs and Julie Andrews but it's really Christopher Plummer who elevates this film. Every second he is on screen he is a magnetic presence without which the piece would just be a nice but overlong affair with random singing. 9: American Sniper. 10: A Most Violent Year. 11: The Gambler (2014). 12: Selma. 13: Kill The Messenger. 14: Wild Card: Jason Staham acts in a Wildman Goldman screenplay which is a very unusual combination and it almost works. A tad uneven and all over the place but it's a damn sight more interesting than any Statham film usually is! 15: Run All Night: Liam Neeson is angry! He must kill people! This time he must protect one of the Robocops from Ed Harris! Yes it's more of the same from this particular sub-genre but it was what I wanted to see and the sequence where he battles Black Terminator in a tower block is a hoot. 16: The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (subbed): It's very nicely crafted though I was a bit bored at times...but it is indeed the very definition of 'well made' and not without charm. 17: Cinderella (2015): A lavish and handsomely mounted production. Gorgeous to look at, very finely acted and you can tell it is from the director of Thor as it has a very similar look and feel to it. That it didn't connect with me is I think more down to me just not being the target audience and not being that fond of the fairy tale when I was a child. Watch out though for a hapless actor who has one whole line in the film. Alas, this line is one of the great clunkers of cinema history. 18: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. 19: Kingsman: The Secret Service (IMAX). 20: Project Almanac. 21: It Follows. 22: Unbroken. 23: Son of a Gun. 24: The Woman in Black: Angel of Death. 25: Taken 3 (IMAX). 26: Seventh Son: Activate generic fantasy movie! Nuts and bolts stuff. Perfectly watchable and very pacey though I expect I'll have forgotten it in a week. Confirms my theory that Tron: Legacy broke Jeff Bridges though. Ever since he has been unable to act. 27: Foxcatcher. 28: Ex Machina. 29: The Divergent Series: Insurgent - Banal. 30: The Gunman: Dull surprise. 31: Chappie. 32: Blackhat. 33: Into The Woods. 34: Jupiter Ascending.

1: Shaun the Sheep Movie. 2: The Old Vic’s ‘The Crucible’. 3: Whiplash. 4: The Theory of Everything. 5: Big Hero 6. 6: The Lego Movie (BAFTA re-release). 7: Globe on Screen: The Duchess of Malfi. 8: The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water - Utterly utterly mad. Completely bonkers. I've never watched a Spongebob thing before. Only saw it because it was the first movie starting when I got to the fleapit and Fast and Furious 7 on IMAX was sold out. Just insane. The bit with the dolphin...I just don't know. 9: The Sound of Music (re-release). 10: American Sniper. 11: A Most Violent Year. 12: The Gambler (2014). 13: Selma. 14: Kill The Messenger. 15: The Water Diviner: Mis-sold with an utterly terrible trailer. Decent wee film. It's nothing groundbreaking but sometimes 'decent wee film' is all you need on a Friday night. 16: Wild Card. 17: Run All Night. 18: The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (subbed). 19: Cinderella (2015). 20: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. 21: Kingsman: The Secret Service (IMAX). 22: Project Almanac. 23: It Follows. 24: Unbroken. 25: Son of a Gun. 26: The Woman in Black: Angel of Death. 27: Taken 3 (IMAX). 28: Seventh Son. 29: Foxcatcher. 30: Ex Machina. 31: The Divergent Series: Insurgent. 32: The Gunman. 33: Chappie. 34: Blackhat. 35: Into The Woods. 36: Jupiter Ascending.

1. Fast and Furious 7 (completely bonkers) 2. Kingsman: The Secret Service 3. Taken 3 4. Exodus: Gods and Kings
My only gripe about F&F6 and 7 is that while the series has become very silly and entertaining, the original four major characters inherited from the first film are too humourless for the scripts. Dwayne Johnson is very much at home with the humour, and Kurt Russell is amazing, but Diesel and the other originals are trying too hard - and failing - to come across as serious and tough, and fail to realise that they are in a Looney Tunes cartoon now and should instead be doing it tongue in cheek like Roadblock. Even Statham was acting like he seemed to think he was in a darker movie than he actually was. And the script kept veering back to honour and 'family' when it should be having a good time.
Kurt Russell and the Rock set the example, but few of the other cast members understood and followed it.

Took the opportunity to go and see Blade Runner on the big screen as the BFI have been nice enough to put the Final Cut version out on general release this week. So very glad I did. Never seen it in a cinema before, but many, many times on video and DVD. Fantastic experience.

Yes I saw that late last year when it was running as a 'one day special'. It's getting a limited run in April at various times so folk should check their local listings. Cineworld and Filmhouse have it on at various dates in Edinburger this month.
Like 2001 it's a film I struggle with on a small screen but in a cinema it's magic. A completely different experience. Some films are just built for the cinema.

What was weird for me watching it like that was whether the clarity in the image was because I was seeing it on a cinema screen for the first time, or whether the fact it's a 4K remaster was making a difference. It did look pretty grainy (ie sharpened) in places, so I'm guessing a lot of what I was seeing was down to the remastering. My Final Cut is the DVD version. Thinking now I need to get the blu-ray.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya (English Dub) 5. Birdman 6. Cinderella - Absolutely well made and gorgeous film. Just didn't click with me. Was never convinced by the lass playing Cinders herself. 7. Project Almanac 8. Selma 9. Ex Machina 10. Kingsmen 11. Suite Française 12. X + Y 13. Run All Night 14. Chappie 15. Focus 16. Jupiter Ascending 17. Shaun the Sheep

1: Shaun the Sheep Movie. 2: The Old Vic’s ‘The Crucible’. 3: Whiplash. 4: Globe on Screen: Titus Andronicus - In one screen, the title character is presented with a sight that breaks his mind and drives him to utter despair, reducing him to hysterical laughter. The whole play is built around the idea that beyond violence is maddening mirth and this informs the whole production where baudy humour crash bangs into visions of complete horror with no pause for breath. A shocking, troubling and horrible thing to watch but extremely compelling and cracking with energy. Taken out of context of the revenge story theatre tradition of the time much of it is beyond the pale to a modern audience (one plot strand in particular) so I can well understand why it's a difficult experience for many folk but the violence is never shied away from. It is horrible but it's meant to be. A really compelling and challenging play to see. 5: The Theory of Everything. 6: Big Hero 6. 7: The Lego Movie (BAFTA re-release). 8: Globe on Screen: The Duchess of Malfi. 9: The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water. 10: The Sound of Music (re-release). 11: American Sniper. 12: A Most Violent Year. 13: The Gambler (2014). 14: Selma. 15: Kill The Messenger. 16: Fast and Furious 7 (IMAX): Entertaining and fun for the most part but it does have a touch of The Expendables 3 about it in that it's fine tosh but has the overall air of a series that has peaked with the previous instalment and it's probably best to call it quits here. Worth it for the bit with the car and three buildings though. 17: The Water Diviner. 18: Wild Card. 19: Run All Night. 20: The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (subbed). 21: Cinderella (2015). 22: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. 23: Kingsman: The Secret Service (IMAX). 24: Good Kill: OK if underpowered drama about drone warfare. It lacks the punch it really needs and the last act is a mild misfire but nice to see a different type of war film about a style of modern fighting the general public rarely thinks about. 25: Project Almanac. 26: It Follows. 27: Unbroken. 28: Son of a Gun. 29: The Woman in Black: Angel of Death. 30: Taken 3 (IMAX). 31: Seventh Son. 32: Foxcatcher. 33: Ex Machina. 34: The Divergent Series: Insurgent. 35: The Gunman. 36: Chappie. 37: Blackhat. 38: Into The Woods. 39: Jupiter Ascending.

Well, Ralph, if you can stomach Titus Andronicus you should have no problem watching Game of Thrones, where the unpleasantness is no worse, and far more diluted in terms of screen time by all the other story elements.

Martin For me having a core group that dont realise they are in a film that make the Expendable look sane is what makes it work. I do agree with Ralph though that it isn't quite as good as 5 and 6. Well in parts. However Paul Walkers death almost certainly resulted in some unbalance. The cast was really shrunk down too, Han and Wonder Woman were gone and I'm sure there would have been more Paul Walker. Then they have the Rock sidelined for much of the film. Then again it felt like it was a bit more back to basics, with most of the the action taking place in cars. The runway scene in 6 really was all about the fight on the plane, the car stuff outside felt very tacked on. And the final scenes are are really touching and well handled. Gotta wonder what some one who doesnt know about Walkers death would make if it, it's like the saddest happy ending ever. It wouldn't be a bad place to leave the series, but assuming 8 gets made, which is a pretty safe bet considering the positive reviews and how much its taking, they'll need to rejig the cast and get the right script to avoid the start of a downwards spiral. One report suggested that Lucas Black could be brought on board, which would be weird as he was playing a school kid in Tokyo Drift, but will be mid 30s in the next film. But it would be keeping it in the FF family. And more Kurt Russell please.

Hmmm. 25: Good Kill. 26: Project Almanac. 27: It Follows. 28: The Salvation: Average Western but it gets more of a pass from me on account of Westerns at the cinema not being that common and it is nicely shot. 29: Unbroken. 30: Son of a Gun. 31: The Woman in Black: Angel of Death. 32: Taken 3 (IMAX). 33: Seventh Son. 34: Foxcatcher. 35: A Little Chaos: Some nice details and scenes but fatally crippled by a central romance that has all the passion of a dead fish. Also suffers from very flat sound design so many scenes just feel dead on screen. 36: Ex Machina. 37: The Divergent Series: Insurgent. 38: John Wick: I can see what it was going for but I found it a curiously leaden and lifeless affair and I was pretty bored. Your mileage may vary. At least the fight scenes were clear even if each one was: lead character walks across screen from left to right shooting people in the head, repeat to fade zzzzzzzzzz. It felt like watching someone else play a video game. Fun can be had spotting actors from The Wire and/or Oz though. 39: The Gunman. 40: Chappie. 41: Blackhat. 42: Into The Woods. 43: Jupiter Ascending.

1. Avengers / Captain America Triple Bill (quality superhero binge night)2. Fast and Furious 7 3. Kingsman: The Secret Service 4. Taken 3 5. Exodus: Gods and Kings Avengers 2 pushes the same kind of buttons as Avengers 1. I like them both, but Cap 2 is by far a better film than either. Loved the endings to Avengers 2, both the individual character ones and the team one. While not a Hawkeye fan, I was relieved that the Deadmeat Thompson cliché set-up was a red herring. Points for the unexpected character death. Note: There is a bonus scene one minute into the end credits but none at the very end. Martin
