8: Future Shock: The Story of 2000AD (UK Premiere): Most attempts to present documentaries on comics tend to veer towards being very patronising to readers of them or are overly dry. This manages to avoid both traps and is entertaining and lively throughout. I'm not sure how it will play to those not completely familiar with the comic '2000AD' as a few of the strips could have had their premise explained a bit more clearly and the strong language of some of the contributers could be off-putting but overall a very good effort and worth seeing if you have even a passing interest in comics as an art form. At the screening there was a Q&A afterwards with the director, one of the producers and two of the interviewees, which was a nice touch. DVD release Dec 7th according to this week's 2000AD. <rubs hands>

However, I'll give anything scripted by Aaron Sorkin a try and I was not disappointed. An absorbing portrait of an inspired yet not terribly nice man viewed through a very clever three-act structure. Fassbender is never off-screen and is just magnetic to watch. Danny Boyle is back on form after the awful 'Trance', directing in an unfussy style which gives the dialogue and actors room to breathe. Sorkin just writes the kind of clever dialogue we all wish we could really sound like in real life. Perhaps the film tries to tie-up themes a tad too neatly at the end but I can let it go. *walks down corridor while talking continuously in an intelligent and witty style* 22: American Sniper. 23: A Most Violent Year. 24: Mad Max: Fury Road. 25: Maggie. 26: Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (IMAX). 27: The Lobster. 28: Ant-Man. 29: The Gambler (2014). 30: Selma. 31: Kill The Messenger. 32: Fast and Furious 7 (IMAX). 33: The Walk. 34: Suffragette. 35: The Water Diviner. 36: Wild Card. 37: Run All Night. 38: The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (subbed). 39: Cinderella (2015). 40: True Story. 41: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. 42: Kingsman: The Secret Service (IMAX). 43: Avengers: Age of Ultron. 44: Hitman: Agent 47. 45: Child 44. 46: Good Kill. 47: Project Almanac. 48: Man Up. 49: The Martian. 50: It Follows. 51: The Salvation. 52: Unbroken. 53: Spooks: The Greater Good. 54: Unfriended. 55: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. The utter horror that crept over me as I knew the next two hours of my life would almost certainly be his avatar (an actor plays him so convincingly you would think it really is him) droning on about his mother and metaphors to do with his mother chilled me to my bones. And I was right. It's all he can do. Even worse was that large chunks of the film were two versions of him talking to himself in that %££%^%*** nasal whiney voice argh fuck sake worst film of all time! ALL TIME!!! TWO ALAN BENNETTS!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!! Should be banned under the Geneva Convention. TWO ALAN BENNETTS!!!! Jeebus wept.

Simply filmed but does the job. 29: Ant-Man. 30: The Gambler (2014). 31: Selma. 32: Kill The Messenger. 33: Fast and Furious 7 (IMAX). 34: The Walk. 35: Suffragette. 36: The Water Diviner. 37: Wild Card. 38: Run All Night. 39: The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (subbed). 40: Cinderella (2015). 41: True Story. 42: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. 43: Kingsman: The Secret Service (IMAX). 44: Avengers: Age of Ultron. 45: Hitman: Agent 47. 46: Child 44. 47: Good Kill. 48: Project Almanac. 49: Man Up. 50: The Martian. 51: It Follows. 52: The Salvation. 53: Unbroken. 54: Spooks: The Greater Good. 55: Unfriended. 56: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. OK, but I didn't feel I got much from it being dramatised that a documentary would tell better. Rather disturbed by large sections of the theatre audience who found the brutal killings hilarious. 83: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. Hmmm. Has the same problems as the third film. There just isn't enough story to support the running time at all and is further hurt by having large plot points telegraphed so far in advance they hold no power when they do happen. The first two films were tremendous, the last two...not so much. There are still nice touches here and there so not without merit but I think in time to come the series will be remembered as two fantastic thought-provoking dramas and...the other two. 84: Regression. 85: Hotel Transylvania 2. 86: The Program. 87: Burnt. 88: American Ultra. 89: The Legend of Barney Thomson. 90: The Divergent Series: Insurgent. 91: Far From The Madding Crowd (2015). 92: Crimson Peak. 93: Mississippi Grind. 94: Hot Pursuit. 95: Terminator: Genisys. 96: San Andreas. 97: Southpaw. 98: Self/Less. 99: John Wick. 100: The Gunman. 101: Chappie. 102: Blackhat. 103: Into The Woods. 104: Pixels. 105: Big Game. 106: The Falling. 107: Jurassic World. 108: The Last Witch Hunter. 109: Kill Your Friends. 110: Fantastic Four (2015). 111: The Hallow. 112: Survivor. 113: Jupiter Ascending. 114: Pitch Perfect 2. 115: True Romance (re-release): Well it was new to me. Really not my cup of tea at all! The tone just did not sit right with me. 116: Trainwreck. 117: Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse. 118: Pan. 119: The Lady In The Van.

6 to go to hit Turnbull's challenge for the year. I definitely want to see Bridge of Spies, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the re-release of Doctor Zhivago. That would get me to #122. Booked for two live theatre screenings but as they are not pre-made they don't count in the film list and go in the live theatre thread.

What a surprise to come back to it as an adult to find it is GRIM DARK HORROR. Very good though. Alec Guinness steals the show. The interval was exactly one minute long, which made the toilet run somewhat more challenging than it should have been. 23: American Sniper. 24: A Most Violent Year. 25: Mad Max: Fury Road. 26: Maggie. 27: Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (IMAX). 28: The Lobster. 29: NT Live Encore: Of Mice And Men. 30: Ant-Man. 31: The Gambler (2014). 32: Selma. 33: Kill The Messenger. 34: Fast and Furious 7 (IMAX). 35: The Walk. 36: Suffragette. 37: The Water Diviner. 38: Wild Card. 39: Run All Night. 40: The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (subbed). 41: Cinderella (2015). 42: The Good Dinosaur. 43: True Story. 44: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. 45: Kingsman: The Secret Service (IMAX). 46: Avengers: Age of Ultron. 47: Hitman: Agent 47. 48: Child 44. 49: Good Kill. 50: Project Almanac. 51: Man Up. 52: The Martian. 53: It Follows. 54: The Salvation. 55: Unbroken. 56: Spooks: The Greater Good. 57: Unfriended. 58: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Imagine my surprise. Only James McAvoy's engagingly hammy performance kept me going. Otherwise it was zzzzzz with Harry Potter in a fright wig surprisingly and atypically bad. Watch out for Mark Gatiss and a splendid moustache turning up for one line. 102: Self/Less. 103: John Wick. 104: The Gunman. 105: Chappie. 106: Blackhat. 107: Into The Woods. 108: Pixels. 109: Big Game. 110: The Falling. 111: Jurassic World. 112: The Last Witch Hunter. 113: The Dressmaker. 114: Kill Your Friends. 115: Fantastic Four (2015). 116: The Hallow. 117: Survivor. 118: Jupiter Ascending. 119: Pitch Perfect 2. 120: True Romance (re-release). 121: Trainwreck. 122: Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse. 123: Pan. 124: Sunset Song (2015): Dour Scottish people with miserable lives walk into brown rooms, ring their caps through mutton hands and say either "Aye" or "Well, ah'll be off then". Repeat for over two hours. Thrill to Peter Mullen doing the gruff Peter Mullen thing. Be astonished by the lead having the emotive power of a strangled surprised octopus. Bang your fists repeatedly on the side of your chair as you beg for death. Gape at the film having no sense of narrative progress as time extends beyond the horizon of consciousness, flashing your life before your eyes as decades pass slower than a constipated cow. Fall to your knees in thanks as the film finally ends suddenly halfway through a scene. Shake your fists in anger at the awards this pile of Hoots Mon wank will no doubt wear about its waist like a happy teenager down the discotheque of dreams. Awful. Fucking awful. 125: The Lady In The Van.

However, I found the film itself to be captivating from the first shot. It really knows how to use film stock, lighting and costumes to create a strong sense of time and place without resorting to cliche and is just a very absorbing and nice film to sit and watch and does what any love story should do which is 'just tell a love story' and I often forgot it was about two women (as opposed to the conventional movie romance of a man and a woman) and just got into it as 'two characters fall for each other' (which is how it should be done). One of the real surprises of the year. Really strong performances. 30: NT Live Encore: Of Mice And Men. 31: Ant-Man. 32: The Gambler (2014). 33: Selma. 34: Kill The Messenger. 35: Fast and Furious 7 (IMAX). 36: The Walk. 37: Suffragette. 38: The Water Diviner. 39: Wild Card. 40: Run All Night. 41: The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya (subbed). 42: Cinderella (2015). 43: The Good Dinosaur. 44: True Story. 45: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. 46: Kingsman: The Secret Service (IMAX). 47: Avengers: Age of Ultron. 48: Hitman: Agent 47. 49: Child 44. 50: Good Kill. 51: Project Almanac. 52: Man Up. 53: The Martian. 54: Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie: CG updates of old hand-drawn cartoons/comics rarely turn out well but this works by capturing the essence and spirit of the source material perfectly without making the mistake of pointlessly 'updating' what people liked in the first place. So Snoopy still uses a typewriter, the kids still use corded house phones, the adults are not seen and just say: "BLAH BLAH BLAH", etc. If it lacks the melancholic air of the Peanuts strips it's clearly made with such love and affection I can let it go. Pleasantly surprised. 55: It Follows. 56: The Salvation. 57: Unbroken. 58: Spooks: The Greater Good. 59: Unfriended. 60: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. It's nothing groundbreaking but it's better than I expected and a lot less depressing than you would think a film about a homeless man would be. Gets lots of points for not resorting to false tricks to make the audience feel 'sad' or portraying the lead character as odd or pitiable. 67: No Escape. 68: Son of a Gun. 69: The Woman in Black: Angel of Death. 70: Taken 3 (IMAX). 71: Solace. 72: The New Girlfriend. 73: Seventh Son. 74: Foxcatcher. 75: A Walk in the Woods. 76: Bill. 77: Minions. 78: Everest. 79: Spectre (IMAX). 80: A Little Chaos. 81: Ex Machina. 82: Legend. 83: Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. 84: He Named Me Malala. 85: Tomorrowland: A World Beyond (IMAX). 86: The Transporter Refuelled. 87: Macbeth (2015). 88: Black Mass. 89: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. 90: Regression. 91: Hotel Transylvania 2. 92: The Program. 93: Burnt. 94: American Ultra. 95: The Legend of Barney Thomson. 96: The Divergent Series: Insurgent. 97: Far From The Madding Crowd (2015). 98: Crimson Peak. 99: Mississippi Grind. 100: Hot Pursuit. 101: Terminator: Genisys. 102: San Andreas. 103: Southpaw. 104: Victor Frankenstein. 105: Self/Less. 106: John Wick. 107: The Gunman. 108: Chappie. 109: Blackhat. 110: Into The Woods. 111: Pixels. 112: Big Game. 113: The Falling. 114: Jurassic World. 115: The Last Witch Hunter. 116: The Dressmaker. 117: Kill Your Friends. 118: Fantastic Four (2015). 119: The Hallow. 120: Survivor. 121: Jupiter Ascending. 122: Pitch Perfect 2. 123: True Romance (re-release). 124: Krampus. 125: Trainwreck. 126: Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse. 127: Pan. 128: Sunset Song (2015). 129: Sisters: Dull comedic surprise. 130: The Lady In The Van.

Daisey Ridley and John Boyega are very watchable, often working wonders with thin material. Domhall Glesson knows exactly how to play that type of character in that type of film. The ball droid character is quite fun. Adam Driver occupies space. Alas, however, I felt no emotion other than increasing boredom. I wanted to feel excited, I wanted to feel tension, I wanted to be enthused and yet when the film suddenly stopped all I felt was: "Is that it???!!!". Sometimes I can watch a film and note many decent qualities in it but just feel no connection or interest with what is happening. I think for me the score reflects how I felt about the film. It's competent but never feels inspired or exciting and the only times I felt it was doing anything interesting was when it was doing reheats of old material. Oh well! 89: Black Mass. 90: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. 91: Regression. 92: Hotel Transylvania 2. 93: The Program. 94: Burnt. 95: American Ultra. 96: The Legend of Barney Thomson. 97: The Divergent Series: Insurgent. 98: Far From The Madding Crowd (2015). 99: Crimson Peak. 100: Mississippi Grind. 101: Hot Pursuit. 102: Terminator: Genisys. 103: San Andreas. 104: Southpaw. 105: Victor Frankenstein. 106: Grandma: Hmmm. Not without merit but I found it hard to get past my dislike for the main character. Sam Shepherd puts in a good turn when he pops up but overall it just wasn't my thing, really. 107: Self/Less. 108: John Wick. 109: The Gunman. 110: Chappie. 111: Blackhat. 112: Into The Woods. 113: Pixels. 114: Big Game. 115: The Falling. 116: Jurassic World. 117: The Last Witch Hunter. 118: The Dressmaker. 119: Kill Your Friends. 120: Fantastic Four (2015). 121: The Hallow. 122: Survivor. 123: Jupiter Ascending. 124: Pitch Perfect 2. 125: True Romance (re-release). 126: Krampus. 127: Trainwreck. 128: Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse. 129: Pan. 130: Sunset Song (2015). 131: Sisters. 132: The Lady In The Van.

1. Shaun the Sheep 2. Avengers: Age of Ultron 3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - has its moments, the new young leads are watchable (though Harrison Ford steals it from them, reminding us how charismatic he could be in his prime), but it never quite grabbed me the way it should have done. Avengers edges it largely due to having a properly charismatic villain. 4. Ant-Man
