As a stand alone toy Inferno is very good. So are Landmine and the deluxe Prime. As Powerlinxed toys they are all awful, awful toys.
The Energon decepticons, spares the "fun" of powerlynxing are mostly great fun.

I find there's something creepy about just TWO Transformers combining. Forming a robot mode anyway. Two combing to form a vehicle isn't as bad (like the Decepticon Powermasters), but I still don't like it. Three or more is fine. Funny how just adding that extra one Transformer into the equation totally clears all the weirdness away for me. But throughout Transformersness, whenever JUST TWO have combined, I haven't liked it.
Edit: oops, sorry Big Phil, another one for ya to warp!

Sold most of mine during the purge, think I've bought all the retail ones back again. No, missing Towline, but he's odd.
REALLY want the Prowl/Checkpoint set again. NICK......
Of the five moulds that do tops and bottoms (Hotshot, Inferno, Rodimus, Prowl, Wheeljack) I don't think there's a really bad one amongst them in either mode. Wheeljack, or whatever they named him in that line (Downshift?) did as my Classics Wheeljack pre Geerations and I still think that Rodimus may be one of the best versions of Rodimus Prime. At one stage I had two of those to Powerlinx together!

Errrm, there's another Powerlinxy post for you to move, Big Phil... he he he...
I still have the black & white Energon Prowl I got from you Big Phil, years ago. So superior to the blue coloured version.
I do remember Rodimus and Inferno (&Prowl) being decent toys. Edit: and Downshiftjack was my Classics Wheeljack too (he had weird big lower legs though). I still have Towline because he's such a good toy (and small child loves him). It's just... combined...
computer says no...

Never understood Powerlinxing in the cartoon though. Why half the size of your army for no reason?

In Energon, all the decepticons were superpowered by Unicron. The Autobots had to powerlinx to be strong enough to fight them.

But they just stood there in space firing their guns from what I can recall. Then they combined and still stood in space firing their guns. Wouldn't that just halve their firepower? I might be wrong and don't want to re-watch any episodes to find out.

Don't hold the unimagination of a very bad anime against the intended fictional explanation of the gimmicks.
The show could have said that the omnicons were exceptional glass blowers, but that doesn't change the fact hasbro intended the toys to use weapons made of energon.

Yes, of course - as toys, it's a great gimmick. Just not so much in the cartoon. It's like regular combiners - I've always seen it more of a strategic advantage (in fiction) for one big robot to split into six individual robots rather than the other way around. But as toys, it's better to create a nice big robot from smaller ones.

Personally I think the Energon style powerlinxing makes a lot more sense than the more traditional combiners.
I can see a greater strength enhancement when you're going one on one with a guy who has more fire power and physical strength, than the two of you have alone. That's an easier pill for me to swallow.
Where as the 5-1 combiners are much more structurally weak, while all you're doing is providing a much larger target, while outnumbering yourself.

I think the "Year of the" line might have generated more interest if Hasbro/Takara had used corresponding BW molds, and created a bit of fiction around each one tying them to the chinese zodiac.
Rat- Gen Rattrap mold Ox- BM Longhorn mold, or BW Bonecrusher (not a one to one) Tiger- BW Cheetor mold Rabbit- BWN Stampy mold Dragon- take your bloody pick, there's a ton of them Snake- BWN Corada mold Horse- BWN Mach Kick mold Goat- BW Ramulus mold Monkey- Any optimus primal mold Rooster- I admit, I'm at a loss. Dog- BW K9 mold Pig- BW Razorbeast mold
And maybe release them in sets? Because a 12 year commitment is just unreasonable. A series of Optimus Primes decoed like slightly off Optimus Primes is only going to go so far.
