Jonathan's Charity Shop Gaming finds continue with a £10 PS2! Any recommendations for games? I was thinking about this and checked my list of PS2 games. I reckon most of what I'd classify as good are still a bit above the 10/11 age range, but if you're into platformer type stuff (being Nintendo fans iirc?) , the Jak and Daxter games are good, as are the Ratchet and Clank ones. A little more cerebral, but absolutely superb is Ico, which is one of the best games the PS2 had in that vein. If you're happy with an element of shooting/killing the Destroy All Humans games are fun - they're a kind of light action game using the 50s Martian invasion vibe. Spider-Man 2 (as in the Macguire film 2) is a good Spidey game, and X-Men Legends is also fun. I also enjoyed Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter. It's not N64 Rogue Squadron good, but it's better than most, even if it's an AotC era styled game.

I don't have a ps3 and have no intention of buying one until the price is reduced and it is re-released in no-smudge plastic. However, I have to say that it is an amazing machine to use. Wow! I forgot I'd posted this! It only took me 8 years, but I bought a PS3 Slim for £80 in 2015.

Been telling myself for a couple of years that when Sony did a PS4 slim I'd buy one to replace my PS3. I love gaming but these days don't mind being behind the curve simply because it's cheaper and I don't get a huge amount of time to play. Finally ran out of PS3 games I wanted to play back in the summer, so Black Friday finally convinced me to move on.
PS4, FIFA 18, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Metal Gear V definitive edition and Dragon Age Inquisition GOTY for a total of £216. Just a shame the SW Battlefront bundle comes with a white console or I'd have had that instead of FIFA. Needs to be black to fit in! Still, gaming sorted for a while.

Don't get Star Wars Battlefront 2, EA have been trying some scandalous stuff with it, basically using a free to play model on a AAA expensive game (ie you need to buy lootboxes to unlock characters and gear and stats, also what is in the lootboxes is random). Really shameful stuff. Really greedy.
They backed down a week after release after a big outcry, and some countries investigating whether this is basically gambling designed to prey on children (which it blatantly is) but in a "we will implement this better later" way not a "we're sorry we're awful" way

i don't really see the problem in this, I ve debated it heavily with students, all the characters and items are available EITHER through lootboxes or extended playtimes, so if you don't wanna pay you can just play excessive amounts and get it that way.

I believe the controversy was that you couldn't get Vader unless you play for at least 40 hours, that isn't great for a flagship game. I bought the last one but will skip this one until that is at least corrected a little, it's very excessive.

its been corrected down to 10 hours per character unlock apparently

its been corrected down to 10 hours per character unlock apparently They reduced the credits needed to unlock the characters by 75% but also reduced the credits gained from competing missions by 75% At least last I heard! So they became cheaper but the in game grind was the same. I have no problem with this sort of add on bonus content in paid for games as long as it is cosmetic. If it's a free game, fair enough. If I'm already paying £50 I don't expect shenanigans like this

You have already paid for the game though. It's not free to play. It's super expensive. And why hide characters behind such long grinds? It isn't for gameplay balance or accomplishment as you can buy them. It is to make you buy them. Also it is aimed at kids.

yeah I get the kids point, I'm coming from a grinding player background I love hard challenging games where grinding is required but far too often its made easy and straightforward to appease casual gaming, I have no problem with this but in 90% of the games it then leaves nothing behind for those of us who want to play the other way

If people are buying a Star Wars game like this, they want to see Darth Vader, let's be honest. It was just a cash grab. But, vote with your wallets folks!

Is all this just for multiplayer? I mean, characters don't disappear in the single player campaign if you haven't played enough to see them?
I can appreciate the tactic for a multiplayer unlock - like Browny says, if playing the game rewards you by unlocking extra bonuses then that's pretty much how other genres like RPGs work anyway.

Playing to unlock is fine. Paying is not, especially on a multiplayer. "Pay to win" is a terrible game model

is it pay to win tho? are the unlockables that much better than the others? or is it more of a cosmetic thing?

Blue have you been watching Jim Sterling like I have?
Even without play to win aspects in multiplayer games, the problem with paid loot boxes allowing you to skip content is that the publisher is basically undermining the value in what you're skipping. They're admitting it's a grind and that if you have the cash you don't have to do it. So when you've paid money already for said content, it's kind of a kick in the teeth to then be told it's not worth it.

Picked up Persona 5 in the Playstation Store sale a couple weeks back. I'd forgotten how engrossing this series is!
I do need to find a way of picking up Persona 4 now. You can only get it digitally in the US store tho...

Picked up the Android version of Final Fantasy Tactics for a few quid in the Google play store sale. This game absorbed my life when it first came out on the PSX. Probably my favourite playstation game.

Playstation Classic apparently coming with 50hz/PAL versions of many of the games, even in NA/JAP regions. For something like Tekken 3, this is a big deal, timing of moves and combos will be slower than intended.

As someone who is legendarily incapable of pulling off combos and special moves in Tekken... this doesn't really worry me much. No more than my inability to do so in the arcade in Wellington bothered me - I used to fall back on my strategy of "your face, Julia's boots. Say hi." :-)

I tend to get engrossed in good games and play them exclusively for long periods. I make time every Saturday morning for my PS4. This morning I finished the single player campaign in Red Dead Redemption 2, which I started last December. Haven't played any other game since then. Not sure I'm ready to leave that world yet so I might spend a few weeks more tidying up incomplete missions. Then the big question about what to spend the next year playing!

Weird thing about those games, I love a good RPG and will immerse myself in them for years (my Skyrim save is just ridiculous), but Dark Souls did nothing for me at all. I tried to get excited, but I think the focus on boss fight strategies put me off. I want to live in the world, not spend ages trying to work out how to kill things.
I've got a big list of unplayed games I'm slowly working through; next will either be MGS5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Mafia 3 or XCom 2 depending on mood at the time.
I do feel out of touch these days though. Given I used to work in the games industry I used to live and breathe gaming, but in recent years I found GamesTM to be the right balance of industry/review and I used that to keep myself informed. Since that went under last year I haven't replaced it with anything (Edge is too industry for me these days) and so I've gone the last ten months with no knowledge of what's coming out that I need to play. I don't feel good about that, but I haven't found any periodical on or offline that succinctly reviews all the quality titles. I keep meaning to pick up the Official Playstation Magazine just to get a feel for what's going on. Like I saw Shenmue 3 is now imminent. Need that BIG time.
In reality though, my unplayed games list, collated from GamesTM right back to the PS4's launch, will keep me going until the PS5 gets its second wave cheaper release. I stay a few years behind the curve usually (RD2 was a present) because it makes gaming much cheaper. For example, Mafia 3 is £8 on Amazon at the moment.
But I do wonder what I'm missing. Feels weird after all this time to have no knowledge at all about what's new and worth playing.
