Easy. Hasbro, but with Reprolabels to sort out the white thighs. That's how much I wants me a mini Minimus Ambus.

Hmm, I don't think I need two. I am a Magnus fan it has to be said but I've got the MP and two Generations as well seems like overkill. Yeah, if I was buying two leaders one would have to be Armada Megs.

The odd thing is that it's the red legs that push me toward the Hasbro one. I don't like them that much, but white legs with red label panels... very stylish indeed. Quite the robot about town. But the Takara blue just looks so much more vibrant.

I think I figured out why CW Ultra Magnus not having a normal cab bot mode irritates me so much.
G1 Ultra Magnus- "normal" sized cab robot, combines with trailer into super mode.
Then we have in this same pricepoint in the past, Super/Leader Class:
RiD Optimus Prime- Voyager scaled cab robot, bombines with trailer into super mode.
Armada Optimus- Voyager scaled cab robot, combines with SELF TRANSFORMING trailer into super mode.
Energon Optimus- Voyager scaled cab robot, has non transforming trailer, and four drones he combines with Voltron style into super mode.
Cybertron Optimus- Voyager scaled cab robot, combines with trailer into super mode.
CW Ultra Magnus, homaging a toy/character that fits this pattern. Instead just goes straight to super mode.
Yeah, I know there's a commentary about how every toy is scaled back and can't do what previous examples of the same class could. But I'm pretty sure a deluxe cab robot with trailer armor is not that extreme for this class.
Realizing that this is what irritates me, I also realized had CW Magnus been a voyager scaled, or even Ultra scaled toy *wouldn't* bother me if he went straight to super mode.

Armada Optimus- Voyager scaled cab robot, combibes with SELF TRANSFORMING trailer into super mode. Sorry to derail the thread and your post, CJ darling, but 'Self Transforming'!!! Where did that gimmick go! Be brilliant to see more of that!

Hasbro only did it because Tomy had done it the previous year for the Sentai series which became Time Force

Woah. I forgot it did that. I need to get that out again.
In some respects Armada was quite a good line.

I agree. Seeing it standing next to CW and United, and even with G1, the MP looks really underdetailed and underwhelming.

It isn't the greatest TF gimmick. And does mean the legs are dreadful.

Hmmm, you may have a point there, CJ and Phil, that 'super' mode, or whatever it was called, wasn't so super. But still... Self Transforming....

I'm not proclaiming that the autotransformation was a great gimmick, but that it was a thing that existed in the same pricepoint as CW Ultra Magnus, a toy that represents one of only two G1 toys with a canon regular mode/supermode.

Self-transforming. Aye. To the point where one day, I was sat working with Armada Prime in super mode on a table across the room, and Prime just decided, of his own accord, to go and sit down. I'm happy with them not doing this dark magic no more...

How could 'Self Transforming' be done right? Or at least, done better? (Time for to Warp Thread, Big Phil? You sexy Mother-Hubber?) Time has been kind to the Armada Prime mold. It's easy to forget how horrifically expensive it was at the time (I want to say the RRP was £40? More? but I know it was almost constantly on sale after that point). The idea was a cool one in that the trailer automatically knows what mode the robot is in, and transforms to accommodate but realistically it just ends up randomly transforming and spasming on the floor as the gears aren't strong enough to take the weight. That's the key problem with self-transforming toys: namely the need to include a method to do it by hand should the batteries run out. Armada Prime just had too much give to really hoist up the heavy trailer. If they'd skipped any ability to do it by hand too I have no doubt it would have been better, but also you'd probably see a lot of broken ones on the aftermarket. I don't mind autotransform gimmicks as long as it does something interesting that can't really be done by hand. Ironically enough, I'd like to see more the technology used in the horrible Speed Stars line, where lots of stuff happened at once. Heck, with Magnus as an example, what about a white cab that turns into the robot, you sit him inside the trailer and then the trailer automatically folds around the robot and forms the supermode. That would be neat. Less like Armada Prime, more like something like Starsaber if the final steps were automatically triggered by plugging the little robot into the main body.

The only autotransform that ive ever really liked apart from jumpstarter/flipchangers is the chest section of the 2007 leader class movie prime. Largely because its relatively harmless and it works.
On the ultra magnus comparison I have to say im more torn than I was before. I slightly prefer the hasbro blue and it also has white hips and all white lower legs. The problem is simply that white from hips to feet doesnt work. Takara go too far the other way. Blue hips red legs and half the lower leg goes blue.
Both would beimproved with an upper leg swap.

I'm glad someone shares my leg related pain. This is a serious and confounding issue. I'm seriously thinking now some astute reprolabels on the Hasbro might be the right course of action.

My repros are on the way. I feel that the Hasbro version lacks paint detail (as usual for modern hasbro). Boga was right about the while ALL the way down the legs. It needs other colors along the way to break it up. But I'm also not sure Takara's direction is the roght choice? Their's almost seems too busy.
But I'm also unsure of Repro's red stickers for the upper legs. Covering only part of each side also makes it look too busy.

Well, I like the look of all the little... glowing energy bits that Reprolabels add in to give an IDW-colouring effect, and I also like the "cockpit" details, so I'll be getting them anyway. But it also occurs to me that much as I want a Minimus Ambus - and I do, I do so very much - I've also wanted an Alpha Trion toy for years. So maybe one day I'll end up getting the Takara version. And then I can mix and match the parts...

Alpha Trion is a big plus for me. The kids really like him. Mumblus Ampule does nothing for me.

I have, and Minimus doesn't do anything for me. Still *really* not a fan of it, and I feel it delegitimizes Ultra Magnus as a self sufficient character.

Or, in a weird kind of way, makes him a bigger character - a legend to live up to. As compared to the Marvel UK Magnus, who was a self-doubting warrior who wandered into a forest and was never heard of again...
