Well. Yes. I don't want to be down on this - I REALLY don't, Primal is my boy - but I don't see anything in this that screams for me to buy it. Yes, it's a really nice sculpt. But it's not drastically different to the original Ultra or the Robot Masters version to warrant buying. Cost really will be a factor here.
Of course, I considered MP Grimlock to be a waste of time 'cos it just looked like an oversized version of the original. And I wasn't fussed about MP-10 Prime considering I had MP-01. But when I got both of them in hand and had a play with them, then I was convinced. Maybe I'll be the same here...

Shame it doesn't appear to have the mace or nightmare mutant face option of the original. But...light up eyes! And gurning monkey face option wooooo.

That robot could be the original to me. Looks very similar. The bonus is the improved articulation in the beast mode, but that comes at the expense of more visible joints.
This is Takara doing a Prime. I'd say at least Ironhide height, probably MP10. I don't think they'd think it worthy if it wasn't bigger than the original.

Yeah. The issue here is that the original was pretty bang on, and this looks the same but with... a worse beast mode chest?
I guess we'll just have to see when the final one is unveiled!!!

I can see the benefit of an MP if the finish is better and the detail more precise. Improved posability. That's what you want an MP to be, the ultimate version. I expect this will look great painted.

It needs actual fur material on it.

Yes. Fur. If I can't feel the fur, I'm not interested.

Yes, if Moss Man from MOTU can do it in 1985, surely Takara can do it 30 years later?

Which He Man also did pretty well with the Stinkor toy.

I hope Primal is flocked like Moss Man.

Moss Man had a lovely smell. I hope Primal is flocked like Moss Man. Moss Man was pine scented wasn't he? That's no use for a Prime primate.

That's a rather gratuitous and needless picture of his bent over arse there.

Is Primal underage? He might be. We need to know!
Er.
Anyway. Yeah. Okay, on the plus side, he's a lot more poseable in ape form - this is welcome. On the minus side, his robot mode kibble is still visible in ape mode. I know that this was also true of the original toy, but this is, y'know, a masterpiece. Or at least it's supposed to be. And this is not.
The ape mode *does* still look good enough to tempt me, mind. But I'll need to see what it looks like painted before even considering ordering.

Really need colour pics to see how much white shows through in alt mode.
Alt mode faces are seriously cartoon good.
Elbow hinges in alt mode if you're doing a chest beating pose... Not so good.

Same size ad a voyager, hu? Is that good?

Well most of the MP cars have been the same size as a Voyager, so... that's not so surprising.

Pic bottom left in the image above shows him a little taller than Rhinox, who in turn is bigger than the MP cars. I'd guess he's closer to MP Ironhide type size?

I'd say he's about dead on with the Ultra Primal. It's larger than I'd have liked, as I'd have liked him to be smaller than Rhinox, but at least he's not supersized as I'd feared.

My interest in this toy shifted from none to possible purchase listening to podcast discussions this weekend. I'm of a mind to think that this is a water tester from Takara because of the potential buzz of the anniversary, and that there is no likelihood of us ever getting any more Beast Wars Masterpieces (Sorry CJ). Because of that, I was going to leave it as I have no enthusiasm for one offs of no fixed abode.
However. Discussion of the new pictures pointed out that although this is branded as a Masterpiece, it would probably work just as well with the Generations Rhinox and Rattrap as a centrepiece for the Generations Beast Wars display. There is indeed the thorny issue of scale, but if you go for toy rather than show, the Ultra Primal was bigger than Rhinox so it would work if you don't question it too much.

Ive always said Rhinox is all but a masterpiece toy and Rattrap and Waspinator aren't far behind so Primal was always going to go with them. I think the size is about right, but I spent a lot more time with the toys than the cartoon. But even if it was an issue I dont think I would want it scaled down to be smaller than Rhinox. It probably could be done, but I imagine there would be some things cut.
As for more BW, if Primal sells it wouldnt surprise me if we at least get Megatron. Its worth remembering MP01 was released for the 20th anivarsary of Transformers and 12 years later Masterpieces are still going strong. All the statements about 20 somethings with disposable income that were made about G1 fans 12 years ago now applies to the fans brought in by Beast Wars.
Also rather than Primal being used to test the waters it could be that it was the Genrations Beasts from 2 years ago that were testing the water for Primal.
