I laughed so damn hard at this. This is the greatest most terrible thing I could imagine, and I cannot believe they have made it.
I demand Mars Attacks! 2 in retaliation.

I'm happier about this than I am most sequels. Most sequels don't need to be made as the original stood just fine on it's own (Frozen for example. Good movie. Frozen 2 does not need to exist). And while ID4 stands just fine as a shallow, but fun popcorn movie, there is a new world to explore here with the way they're doing it. If they started milling out sequels immidiately, I'd groan and moan to leave it alone. But coming back 20 years later, we get to see how Earth has changed after (barely) surviving. Most of our cities had been destroyed. We have access to alien technology. Surely some of the aliens survived the crashes. There's actually stories to be told in this post ID4 world, that wouldn't have been nearly as interesting 20 years ago.
This is what a sequel really should be, IMO.

If sci fi has taught me anything it's that aliens are shit. Really shit.
They never win at anything and it's always some wee gimp with a light bulb moment that outdoes them.

If sci fi has taught me anything it's that aliens are shit. Really shit. That's just asking for a long list of counterexamples. I kick off the list with: Transformers Yoda Superman Thor And my new favourite aliens from the pages of X-Men and New Mutants: Lockheed Warlock Perhaps what you meant to say was that bad guys are shit. Martin The Decepticons have never once been able to successfully take over the planet. Yoda isn't on Earth. Superman isn't trying to take over the earth. Likewise Thor. Yes, I really should've been clearer. What I meant is that any alien coming here to take over loses.

There are plenty of great aliens out there. The Kizinti, the frankly terrifying hive-mind species from "The Shiva Option", the creatures from "Childhood's End", the inexplicable thing or things being fought in Yukikaze, Spock of Vulcan, the nano-tech ship creatures of "Fallen Dragon". The Doctor... Lots of things. Karl

Or alternatively, the major (if reliably bonkers) power from the "Known Space" setting who snuck in to Star Trek through Larry Niven not being bothered enough to do a new story instead of retyping "The Soft Weapon" with different character names. :-)
(The story worked much better the first time around. It doesn't really suit the ST setting)

See what I've done. For the avoidance of doubt, I meant that almost every alien species that comes to conquer earth ends up losing.
