I expect to hear Ralph's rage-filled outburst any minute now...

Ah, I dunno. As I understand it Simon Pegg had a hand in the writing of this one, so maybe it might be worth the look. And it does look like there's some level of exploring involved, even if it is a forced, stranded, fighting for survival kind of exploration, rather than through choice.

So uh, what's it about?? I just watched the trailer and have no idea Explosions! Punching! Rock music! Explosions! Evil Aliens! Rock Music! Fighting! Rock Music! Motoooooorrrrcyccccclllleee! Rock Music! That was agonisingly generic as trailers go. Genuinely felt like it was a set of stock parts socketed together and left in their primer coats without even an attempt to make it look like it is anything other than stock bits. Karl

David Sobolov notes that it seems rather influenced by Guardians of the Galaxy. I can't think of anything that should be LESS influenced by Guardians of the Galaxy.

Going on the basis of that trailer, Into Darkness is perfect Star Trek.

The main cast has been pretty much spot on I feel. Badly served by the scripts though.

Pegg on writing duty means it just can't be as bad in every way possible as Darkness was.
I quite enjoyed Lins work on Fast and Furious and apparently Community so I'm not concerned about that either.
I'm quite looking forward to it really.
Trailer is very not Trekky though.

Honestly, I think they should have just waited until the Star Wars hype dies down a bit and people have it out of their systems, then release a proper trailer. As it is, people on a Star Wars high will bash *anything* Trek*, no matter how good or bad it is. It's always best to not only stay under their radar, but DON'T HELP IT BY RELEASING MEDIOCRITY.
*At least that's been my experience. I've never met a SW only fan who wasn't a huge asshole to me the second they find out I like Trek.

I'd consider myself a Star Wars fan more than a Star Trek fan, but I like Trek fine. The original crew stuff especially.
And I MEAN the ORIGINAL crew.
No, I DON'T mean Pike. Shut up.

When I was younger it was more you're either a sci fi fan, and like everything to some degree, or you're not. I think there's been some recent dividing up into fiefdoms but if anything that's more due to the American influences on the internet and the fans that have come through in the last 20 years or so and the wider spread of sci fi culture

You're either receptive and a fan of everything, willing to give it all a shot, or you're friendly with other fandoms even if you don't enjoy that particular thing. I don't mind good natured rivalries, at all. It can be kinda fun when at the end of the day, everyone's good friends. But yeah. I've known my share of SW fans who've treated me like shite once they find our I'm a trekkie. Taking every opportunity to bash it and tear me down. (My only real problem with Star Wars itself, though I don't personally enjoy it, is disney's mass marketing campaign has exhausted me of a movie that's not even open. SW being slapped on EVERYTHING. Soup commercials, car commercials, cellular data plan commercials. I'm not making this up, either. Something SW is literally every other commercial on american TV) Maybe it's different in other countries, or even other states. But, yeah.

The Transformers films are the same, I even found tissues with one of the TF films plastered on it last week. It's not been as bad in the UK, a much smaller market to be fair, so I've not felt overwhelmed with it. Personally, I can't wait for the new SW movie. Although there's no way it can live up to my expectations. I'm with you regarding the ST trailer. It's a loud trailer that tells absolutely nothing. It doesn't look promising. That could be a good thing, Into Darkness promised so much and was a bit of a let down.

No. Just... No. The marketing is not like with transformers. Or Jurassic World, or Hunger Games, Harry Potter, or any other massive blockbuster franchise. It may be over there (as you said, smaller market), but I've *never* seen anything on this level of intensity here. The marketing on this new movie has reached levels I never knew possible. It's not just "special edition potato chips with yoda on the bag!" Like we get for Ironman and other movies (though there is that). It's things you never would think to use star wars to advertise, like the cellular data plans I mentioned earlier. Not even SW themed data plans, or comes with a SW phone case or something.
And it's this intense, every third commercial on TV is this level.

We've just had the usual Star Wars logo on random products and a million new toys. You have my sympathies.

Most don't use actual footage. There are around fifteen different commercials that end with dads looking lovingly at their kids, then proclaiming "I am your father!"

When I was at university some people tried to explain to me the difference between 'sci-fi', 'science-fiction' and 'SF'. I never really understood it.
I was really into both Star Trek (mostly TNG) and Star Wars (special editions) and read loads of the books spinning off from both. My Star Wars enthusiasm peaked with the trailer to 'The Phantom Menace' then steadily declined, and I decided that while Star Trek did good one-part and two-part stories, it wasn't in Babylon 5's league when it came to ongoing sagas. I'm looking forward to seeing 'The Force Awakens' next Tuesday but not as much as I now look forward to new Marvel Studios or Bond movies, which I am much more inclined to make an effort to see the day they first come out.
