A late sting in the tale.
We are nearly at the end of this adventure.

Hard-Boiled Detective fiction from the mind of Karl seldom is!

Yes, it has to be said that although Andy is the public face of Gymshoe on here, Karl has done an absolutely superb job with the script. Really good writing. It has the feel of a daily newspaper strip - something that is designed to be read over time in installments.

Gymshoe was initially Karl's idea. I just simply demanded a part in bringing it to life.
We always had it in mind to be done in small parts and to serialise it online in little chunks and then collect the full story at the end. So we've tried to make every page end on a cliffhanger.
As much a love letter to old school UK comics as it is to detective fiction.
I feel as I have gotten nearer the end of it that the work is better - certainly some of my panel decisions are better. The temptation to revisit earlier pages is mighty.

The end of How To Spell Trouble. Hope you've enjoyed this tale. A couple of days away from it now to kickstart a few other things and then we shall do some edits/refinements ahead of the collected version. Andy

Bravo chaps. That was brilliant. I absolutely must have a collected print edition for a proper re-read.

It has the feel of a daily newspaper strip - something that is designed to be read over time in installments. Thanks - it was a fun script to write. I'm a long-time afficionado of the "Private Eye" genre - my reading matter over the years has probably included as much Robert B Parker, Sara Paretsky and the like as it has Clarke, Asimov and Cherryh. So it was a lot of fun to be able to play with the classic genre tropes a little. And you have very much put your finger on how it was structured - it was always conceived as being a proper serial in structure, with lots of short episodes that built onto each other. It was fun - and challenging to write that way - I'm not naturally a brief and succinct writer so it was a bit of a new discipline. Gymshoe was initially Karl's idea. I just simply demanded a part in bringing it to life. Wouldn't have had it any other way - after all, it was that chat over a pint we had which turned Gymshoe from a "wouldn't it be neat" to a "right, we need to actually _do_ this", so there was no other choice other than your good self really. I've almost finished getting it ready to print.
Edits have been made where necessary, a few more may still be required - a fresh set of eyes have scanned over it today.
The final edition will be 36 pages in US comic format.

Right - that's the final, final edits done.
Barring a last minute panic check tomorrow we are good to go to print.
Gymshoe will be 36 pages in glorious monochrome and will be £2.50 of your finest pounds.

Enjoyed reading the collected volume, and glad I read it in this format - I don't think I'd have enjoyed reading it in one-page instalments any more than I'd enjoy reading a Chandler, Hammett, Spillane or Macdonald story in one-page sittings. Plus, as I confessed to Andy, I didn't want to give any praise that would encourage further distractions from Another Time and Place... Anyway, a fun twist on the genre, nicely drawn and clearly written by someone who has read an awful lot of it (as I have!). It has all the hallmarks in terms of plot structure, though obviously without the sex, violence, drinking, smoking, etc. etc.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it Martin! Interesting that you think that it is better suited to the collected format, having originally plotted it to fit the page-a-week concept I was wondering how well it would work when it was all flowed together. Sounds like it still works ok though.
Yep, both of the creators are fairly au-fait with detective fiction and, speaking purely for myself, I wanted to "play with a straight bat" and stay inside the rules of the genre. Turned out to be quite an interesting process - and reminded me that genres are not necessarily straightjackets, sometimes they make very good tool-boxes as well.
