I always enjoy seeing re-enacters of Ye Olde Times going for it. You can always spot someone who is so into it you can't tell if they realise it's not real and one who does not give a toss and is making up the numbers. Such stuff is great fun to see and I always learn something.

My Mums cousin is an archealogist (yeah thats spelt wrong) that has done some reenacting in the past. I think one of his appearances on Time Team was in full costume, but I'm fuzzy on that.

I don't think they had any idea of what they'd done! They didn't. At least, if it is the incident I'm thinking of, they were quite oblivious. More like a terrible Seeker, going off in all directions and not detonating anywhere near a valid target. Kind of like the old AIM-9A's which would wander off and try to shoot down the sun, or its reflection in a lake... I've not really got a problem with the term cosplay, or Costume Play to expand it to its proper form, in its proper context, but the way it is generally used over here is missing a lot of the broader cultural context - after all, it didn't just evolve to cover dressing up as characters from television, film or comics. The term actually covers all sorts of things in its home country - the themed Maid Cafes in big cities like Tokyo, the various fashion cliques and what-not. Things that we either don't have, or which are still very deeply sub-cultural over here. It probably doesn't help that the term originally migrated through US Anime fandom, which left it shorn of a lot of its original context by the time it reached over here. As to it sounding ugly. Yeah, it does to us - but then English is our native language, and we are used to being the benificiaries of languages being mugged in a dark alley to have words stolen from them. English has long been the greatest word-thief in history - only fair that it get done over a couple of times for the contents of its pockets in return. :-) Karl
