I am sure I read a TMUK comic where he was Scorponok (was that one of Matt D's?) so it must be true

How could he not be??
Although to be fair he is more Black Zarak than Scorponok outside of TMUK.

Yes, it is because of Transtrip that I think of Double Punch as Scorponok which is incredibly biased and self indulgent I know but it's the only fiction (be it fan fiction) that I can associate him to. Also Krok seems to act the same in the official media now as how he did in Transtrip (leader but friendly and not too strict with those under his command and willing to stand for what he believes in). Then again, G1 Scorponok has three distinct G1 personalities anyway (and it is the Marvel one I like so much).
But also:
1) When he was designed they obviously had Scorponok/Black Zarak in mind and it must have been a last minute change to the name.
2) Had the UK comic continued as it should have and new toys had to be introduced, I'm pretty sure that there would be some connection to Scorponok being saved with Nucleon.
3) Omega Spreem and Turbomaster are also too close to Omega & Bruticus for that to be ignored. We know where Omega Spremes name comes from but perhaps there was no copyright for the other two names at the time or Hasbro UK?Europe decided to change them for whatever reason.
I guess some of the above is speculative but I seem to have opened this can of worms so thought I'd share my views.
Of course the real question is - how can he 'double-punch' when he has sharp pointy Claws and no fists?

He should have been Double Pinch, but there was a typing error.

Did no-one read the tech spec on the toy??? That's his only official media! He is not Scorponok!
I now declare that Warpath is actually Grimlock.

Not saying he is 'officially' just that he is Scorponok to me. (and a others, going by the poll!) And yes, I agree the toy bio is his only official thing - but it doesn't say he is not Scorponok either! (And Rodimus Primes tech specs don't mention Hot Rod either).
But, yes, I respect that officially he isn't Scorponok (yet).

Transtrip is a more coherent saga than CG2 as it was written by a single author with a single vision. I think Transtrip should be reprinted!
Transtrip was in black and white, and the character that looks like Double Punch is referred to as Scorponok throughout the story, so maybe if it appeared in colour he would be seen to have the colours of the original Scorponok rather than the colours of the Double Punch toy. Double Punch could be a different character with the same design as Transtrip's Scorponok but different colours.
Despite that theory, and the tech-specs, and logic, out of solidarity with the awesome Transtrip Scorponok saga I am voting that Double Punch is Scorponok.

You're all mad!
By this logic if Topspin does not say he is not Megatron then he can be Megatron if he wants to be!
Someone's identity does not change if they are represented in black and white! That makes no sense!
MAD! MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!
Rodimus Prime isn't Hot Rod! He's Rodimus Prime!

Someone's identity does not change if they are represented in black and white! That makes no sense! Agreed. Fortunately no-one suggested it did. But appearing in black and white casts doubt on whether you are one TF or another, since different TFs can share the same design and be distinguishable only by colour scheme. Transtrip never established whether the character called Scorponok had Double Punch's colour scheme and therefore claimed identity with the Double Punch toy. However, you said "YOU DECIDE!" We took you up on that offer. Martin

Double Punch is Double Punch, it says so right on his packaging. Also, and more importantly, declaring that he is Skorpornok wearing a disguise means trading an opportunity of a new character for a retread of an old character. It shrinks the universe of The Transformers instead of enlarging it.

Without Matt's fanzine saga that revolved around a Scorponok who looked like Double Punch, there would have been no TMUK. It enlarged the Marvel TF universe by building on an existing character, not 'retreading' one. (That fanzine saga was no doubt also an influence on MTMTE, in terms of characters like Krok and Misfire.)

I apologise, I wasn't entirely clear in what I was posting. I was referring to the Double Punch toy - which is what I thought the original question referred to, and to the apparent authorial intent behind it. I don't have a view on Transtrip as I haven't read enough of it in enough detail to render a viewpoint on it. I'm sorry if it came across as dismissive or otherwise negative about Transtrip.
I am all in favour of expanding and building on existing characters, but I also think there is room for two similar-looking scorpion-related folk in the Transformers universe. After all, it started out with three nearly identical-looking F-15 blokes who weren't all the same character.

No prob, Karl. As for authorial intent behind the toy, we'll never know whether the original designer of the toy thought they were designing a new version of Scorponok or just copying him to create a new character. Once he had been designed, they gave him names and tech specs that make him a different character from Scorponok, but no-one was fooled into thinking Scorponok was not the inspiration for the toy design. Maybe if he had been released properly in the US and UK they would have called him Scorponok. Various toys around that time had different names in different countries. Ginrai was Optimus Prime when released in US/UK. (OK, the toys weren't identical but they could have been.)
Matt took the artistic licence to assume that DP was originally intended to be Scorponok and might have been called Scorponok if released in the US and UK, or if the Marvel comic was still running. (Banzaitron would very likely have been Action-Master Bludgeon had the Marvel comic continued.) This resulted in the second longest running fanzine comic and one of the most rounded characters in TMUK history. Until G2 came along and distracted everyone.

DOUBLE PUNCH CAN BE WHOEVER HE WANTS TO BE! IT IS NOT FOR US TO DECIDE ON AND CONSTRAIN HIS IDENTITY! HE IS FREE! (I'm helping, right?) Anyway... I am all in favour of expanding and building on existing characters, but I also think there is room for two similar-looking scorpion-related folk in the Transformers universe. After all, it started out with three nearly identical-looking F-15 blokes who weren't all the same character. Now I'm sad that this never happened. Scorponok, Black Zarak and Double Pinch, the giant robot scorpion brothers! For hire!

Ginrai was Optimus Prime when released in US/UK. (OK, the toys weren't identical but they could have been.) Absolutely - in fact, it is fairly common as the original line rolled on for characters to diverge between different areas. Some of the Micromasters aren't even on the same sides as their dopplegangers from one country to another at times! (Not that I'm very good at keeping the Micromasters straight at the best of times. I sometimes have to fall back on a Roadimus Prime-esque "But Mr Micromaster..." approach :-) ) It seems like a reasonable way to bring Skorpornok back onto the table. (Which end goal I have no objections to at all - Skorpornok was one of the most interesting characters in the later Marvel comic run, and it would be interesting to see what directions Matt took him in). It does sound like I need to have a poke around in my archive and see if I have any of Transtrip lurking around to give it a proper read. For which now would be a fortituous time - being between university and my next career I have some reading time back temporarily! Interesting idea of Banzaitron ending up as AM Bludgeon, and I think you might well be right I can see how that might have been the way that Simon Furman would have gone with that - keeps Hasbro off his back and lets him keep a character he had investment in developing in play. It is the sort of pragmatic move that strikes me as in keeping with what he had done previously in latching onto the TFTM cast so as to get room to manouvere. Karl Fortuitous timing

In regards to the colours, yes, I did envisage Transtrip Scorponok/Doublepunch (ScorpoPunch?) in his toy colours for better or worse. (I always tried to feature the new 'toys' as that's what the Marvel comic would have had to do. And I loved new toys/characters)
The ironic thing is that in Transtrip he was actually Scorponok in name only - he was actually programmed with Zaraks's memories and acted accordingly. He did change his name to Double Punch at the end of the series too. So nice of you all to remember Transtrip so fondly - it really was a typical Fanzine of it's time and probably hasn't aged well.

The Beast Wars Doupble Punch is intended to be the Action Master character survived through the centuries. I find it amysing that if he were supposed to be G1 Skorponok too (he's not)he's lived long enough to see someone else take his name and rise the ranks of the Predacons above him. And an absolute idiot, no less. I also view Turbo Master as someone else. There was no loss of name copyright for these two at the time, and Spreem has enough documented real world flabberghastery going on for us to know the intention was that he be the same character.
