Coupla BIG problems have arisen within the mind of Shockprowl. Big in the sense of collecting Transformers (not real life, which is pretty damn good acutally!). I need to air these problems to my TF lovin' family. Before they eat me alive.
1. Animated. I agree TFs needed something fresh, and Animated is certainly that. It's new, it's different- But I don't like it! There, I said it, I'm outa the closset! I don't like Animated! I don't like the style! I don't like the chins! I've tried to be possitive, honestly! But I just don't like it! What I do like blocky! I like Armada/Energon/Cybertron/Classics! I'm greatly comforted by the continuation of Classics in Universe. But Animated is the 'MAIN' TF line we're talking about here, and I don't like it. Lord help me.
2. And most disturbingly. You wont believe this. You recall I received Beast Wars Fuzzors Injector and Sky Shadow recently? You may recall I was initially blown away by their size and style? After some time has passed... I don't like them. Infact, I REALLY don't like them! Can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it may be some thing to do with the fact they are Fuzzors. Wierd meargings of creatures. They freak me out! Quickstrike, my previous only Fuzzor, doesn't seem to have the same effect, although I am disliking the cobra head/tail now. Just can't beleive it! Don't understand.
Wow. That felt good.

That isn't really an issue I'd say. More an aesthetic preference, which is a perfectly valid viewpoint. Given the way the design aesthetic of Transformers toys changes from one line to another (and even within lines sometimes) it makes sense that there will be lines that you don't like. For example, I have a grand total of one single Micron Denetsu toy (and a small tub of Mini-cons I must cull out at some point) , because I don't like the "look" of the line. I only have a handful of Cybertron/Galaxy Force toys because I only like some of the line. Likewise, I only own one of toys from the "Masters" era of "The Transformers" because, once again, I don't like most of them. There is no requirement that you have to like every toy with "The Transformers" logo on it. I can't think of any franchise that I like every single piece of mechanical design for - even in Macross I think the VA-3 Invader is one of the most hideously ugly transformable fighters I have ever seen, and in converse there are a couple of designs from Gundam shows I actually quite like. Like what appeals to you, don't feel that you need to like everything just because it has a franchise label on it. Karl

Thanks karl, that's made me feel better. I was just blown away with how I went off them. Not like me! I'm calling the incident Fuzzgate. The point with Animated is that it's the 'main' line and presumabily will be for a while yet, and Shockprowl don't like!
Injector and Sky Shadow are up for grabs by the way anyone.

I lived through 5 years of irritation with the main line. Maybe longer Since BM dropped the character art. RID was great but only a filler then AEC came along and I just about lost all interest in the main line. Cybertron started to pull me back in but it want till Classics that I really got excited about the majority of a line.
Happy to say Animated is doing just about everything right for me. Yeah I could live without the chins and other design features but I like then again I love the unity of design across the line. I also love that even though we're stuck with at least 3 languages on the packaging they are using the back of the instructions to print full colour profiles.
Personally I suspect part of continuing the classic line was that they knew Animated was not going to appeal to everyone.

The point with Animated is that it's the 'main' line and presumabily will be for a while yet, and Shockprowl don't like! Perfect opportunity for you to go after stuff from other lines that you do like, or to lay aside money against the future. I've been through a situation with disliking the main line - heck I bought a lot of Armada stuff out of habit that I ended up sending to the Shelter shop once I clarified with myself that I only owned them out of a sense of inertia. I think a lot of us have to kill our sense of completism. After all, a hobby should be fun - if you don't like something then that is a good reason not to buy it. After all, in Transformers terms if you don't like animated there will be a tie-in line to another live-action movie along in less than twelve months, and in between that there will be Universe. There will be diversity of product in due course. Like buses, of you don't like where this one is going then you can always hang on for the next one. Karl

I really cant decide what to make of Animated at all, some of the designs look very nice, others really do look like they let a monkey do the designs. Dinobots and Soundwave will be onthe to get list though I think.

As a long time Transformers collector (25 years now! wow!) I'll tell you that there comes a point in every collector's life where he suddenly asks the question: Do I really need or want this? I find it a sign of the times that Shockprowl writes how he was into Armada/Energon/Cybertron and liked the designs and is now going through his first "oh my God! What are these!" Transformers shock phase. Ah... how sentimental I get when I think about how - for me - it was Armada/Energon/Cybertron that made me go "Oh my God! What are these!" and really turned me off from the line. For a lot of other people - the Beast Wars; so radically different from everything and anything they were accustomed to during G1 did it. Those members who advise just focusing on what you love are right. It took me a while - but I ultimately have reduced my collection and am solely interested in Beast Wars II, Beast Wars Neo, G1 (TFC/Encore reissues - keep rollin' 'em out!) and Masterpiece - with the occasional toy from a line - for instance Robotmasters Star Saber and Victory Leo. In general, I think there's no rule that says you have to buy every single figure from every single line, and certainly you are no less of a Transformers Fan or Transformers Collector if you shun certain lines for others. The problem - I guess - is making these hard choices - because sometimes I experience nostalgia for things I know I don't like on principle... For example - I hate Armada - but I like the Japanese version of Shockwave... and if I could, I'd get him. I like the Decepticons from Energon/Superlink - particularly Megazarak... I really like the Car Robot Brothers... But even so - I guess that's only a few characters out of an entire line. Animated wise; I probably will end up getting only the Dinobots. And that's fine. Nothing wrong with that. My main interest is expanding my G1 collection, and my Japanese Beast Wars collection. I like boxed figures and hate carded figures (because I like to keep the box ) so I tend to run away from anything Hasbro has to offer (which is mostly carded or the boxes need to be torn open and the figure pried from his twisty tie prison to get to). But don't feel bad - this kind of feeling strikes all of us - particularly when an "era" comes to an end that we were deeply moved by ... and then all of a sudden - whamo! Something completely new that tramples what we've known. just my two cents

And fine two cents they are to, Dyrl! It's funny, for me it was Beast Wars that turned me off collecting for those long long 'Shockprowl Wilderness Years'. And now I'm obsessed with them!!! I think they're wonderfull 'Transformers'. The wheel comes round...
In terms of Animated. I think the overiding factor for me is the fact they don't fit into my 'New G1' collection that I've built up from A/E/C and Classics.
That and the Chins of Dooooom!!!

Yeah - for me the problem with animated is that they don't fit into ANYTHING. The aesthetic is sooo out there that it's hard to even place them alongside the other TFs... Actually - the only line that Animated would go with is...Pretenders... I mean - Pretender shells are pretty whacky - so I suppose such wackiness would fit in with Animated... I guess I just don't like stylized vehicle modes. In fact - with Beast Wars - what turned me off were Transmetals; and then Beast Machines just did things in. I like my alt modes to attempt to be realistic. So "vanilla" BW - with skin, fur etc I really appreciated. But "robotic animals" - meh - a sub line of robotic animals I can handle (Seacons, Predacons), but an entire series? Naaah. Armada/Energon/Cybertron turned me off with the unrealistic alt modes as well. Although, there were a few exceptions... Oh - that and the cartoons really blew I actually prefer Car Robots/RID to Armada/Energon/Cybertron. Car Robots didn't take itself seriously and was therefore an enjoyable gag filled romp. A-E-C were patently absurd and yet pathetically serious about themselves... But then again - I guess it's a generational thing. Lots of kids "grew up" on Armada/Cybertron/Energon - and are probably experiences "oh my God!" syndrome with animated in a way I never could have imagined. I mean - I basically always compare things to G1 and BW... so the idea that some kids are saying "well this doesn't measure up to the brilliance that was Energon!" is just wierd for me But that's life dyrl

Yep, that's what happens when you get OLD! ARGH!
Yeah, Animated is certainly 'out there'. Although it's not my cup-of-tea, I gotta hand it to Hasbro that they're tryin' something different. If they keep rollin' out Classics/Universe there wont be any Shockprowl related problems!
I've never seen A,E or C cartoon, but pretty much everyone in the entire universe seem to think they were rubbish. Seen bit of Cybertron at work, and it passed the time, but that's it. As for the toys, it's all about the G1 homages with me. Some are great, some are exceptable. But that's me - Captain Blocky!!!
Just out of interest, Dyrl, what did you make of 6" Titaniums?

Stom's current necrobumping worries me. Makes me think it's something to do with the game.

This was actually a really good thread to necro, because- Coupla BIG problems have arisen within the mind of Shockprowl. AGAIN! For a while now, I have been thinking of- MOVING ON MY MASTERPIECE COLLECTION!!!
I've been building up a small but perfectly-for-Shockprowls-formed collection of Generation. I find Generations cheaper, easier to get, easier to store, easier to take care of, feeding etc, and easier to play with! I can't remember the last time I got my Masterpieces out! With two exceptions, MP10's Trailer, which Small Child likes to play with, and my three Third Party Masterpiece-style Dinobots, which actually haven't been out in a while. Now, of course, MP Prowl stand on display on my allowed shelf in the bedroom with a selection of other Prowls. BUT OTHER THAN THAT I DON'T GET MY MASTERPIECES OUT! And I'm certainly not going to buy anymore! DO I STILL NEED MY MASTERPIECE COLLECTION?!?! DO I?!?!What's a girl to do?!?! Debbie
