Made me think, that. How do you define a sandwich? A hotdog is meat between bread. So is a ham sandwich.

It is not a sandwich. -Ralph Agreed. A sandwich is something between two pieces of bread. A hot dog only becomes a sandwich if you separate the two halves of the bap, put one underneath and one on top. Or, to quote the Oxford English Dictionary, "A set of two or more (esp. buttered) slices of bread with a usu. savoury filling between them." Martin

What if your bun splits in half mid-way through eating?

Then you would have to aban-bun your meal.

Wow! This really is The Ultimate Question, isn't it?!?!
So profound....
I... I need to lay down...
-No that didn't help. I need, I need beer.
Actually I really need a hotdog right now.
But beer will suffice whilst I ponder....

Ok, after much Stella and much thought-
No. A hot dog is NOT a sandwich. Yes, it is meat and bread, and a sandwich is also meat and bread, but it's in the ARRANGEMENT. That is the significant, er, thing... here.

Do people chuck their hot dogs at bonfires? -Ralph

Hot dogs (and burgers) are often served at public bonfire events in exchange for currency.
I had a hot dog on the way home today after being inspired by this thread. Thanks all!

I don't know how they do it in Scotland, but in England you must stand eating a hot dog or a burger as you watch the fire. Then you get the cheap fireworks out and you put them in a bucket and smoke goes everywhere. Then you put the rocket in a bucket and the bucket falls over and the rocket shoots across the lawn at you with a scream of flaming death. I miss my student days

I have experienced many, many fireworks night experiences. Things are chucked on a big fire and fireworks are let off. Everyone watches. There are no burgers or food of any kind.

Ok. I think that the celebration of the fascinating historical event of 'Gunpowder Night' (aka 'Robert Catesby' night) is brilliantly set to be remembered with lovely hot food stuffs.... the TYPE of food-stuff is open to.... errr.... whatever the organiser of the fireworks can manage...?
