Spinning my comments from the TF5 thread to keep from further derailing it: I reckon 3D would have died by now if cinemas hadn't had to pay so much to upgrade their equipment. Load of nonsense. The 3D gimmick does indeed seem to be on it's way out. As someone who not only needs eyeglasses, but has a perscription that all but destroys my depth perception, I absolutely HATE 3D. The special 3D glasses do not fit comfortably over one's perscription glasses. The latter of which tend to force the 3D glasses far enough away from one's eyes that it distorts the film's 3D effects. And since i naturally do not have depth perception, the sudden forced 3D is uber unnatural and fairly disorientating. But what irritated me more than all of that, was I called it a fad when it started. IMAX? HD? These are real breakthroughs. These are as much gamechangers as sound, color projectors, and color televisions. But the 3D is and always has been a gimmick. I know 3D was a fad because every decade or two they dig it out and repackage it "Now with NEW technology, you'll feel like you're THERE!" But a lot of my friends vehemently denied this, saying this is for real, it's how everything will be done from now on! 3DTV's dead. Fewer and fewer blockbusters are getting the 3D treatment. I don't think it'll ever be anything more than a gimmick, as long as it relies on special glasses to see it.

3D is a cyclical movement in cinema and has been with us as long as cinema has been around. There were 3d films 100 years ago. This particular cycle has caught on more than others and will be around for a while and the popularity of 3d outwith the US does remain high. Disney has a policy of releasing all their franchise films in 3D and 2d formats.
Personally, I have no time for it as it is uncomfortable to wear 3d glasses over prescription glasses. Tried it and it was physically painful. I usually ignore it. Only times it bothers me are very occasional times when a distributer decides not to release 2d prints (ie this is why I could not see Dredd in a cinema). At the Edinburgh IMAX theatre where there is a film which is available on 2d and 3d only the 3d version is shown in that format. I would like to see Star Wars and Marvel films on IMAX but the distributer says no so I spend less money and watch the 2d release on a regular screen instead.
3DTV's seem to have utterly bombed though.
In real life, 3D doesn't amaze me when I walk down a street!
I'll pay attention to movie 3d if it is ever released in a format which does not require special glasses. Another big complaint I had was the light loss of a quarter to make the effect work so the picture is much darker though I understand laser projection is solving this problem.
