I think I figured out why WfC: Siege fails to excite me beyond individual figures.
Because Hasbro is now treating Generations like a mainline, and each rebrand now represents a new "story." And this time, the "story" the figures are trying to tell brings nothing at all new to the plate. The plot is a repackaging of the same plot we've gotten several times: the war before they come to earth. We've gotten it in The War Within, War for Cybertron, Fall of Cybertron, and from IDW. For me, a straight forward nostalgia line does not need to tell a story, or be part of one. But ever since Combiner Wars, this has been Hasbro's angle. And with that, this one so far fails to be exciting. The toys themselves, by trying to be as "iconic" as possible, also fail to bring it, even though we've never had this concept as a toyline before. We've never had a line dedicated to being pre-earth versions. But instead of looking like alien vehicles, they just look like slightly futuristic earth vehicles.
This whole line, from concept to execution, just completely lacks imagination. Now if Generations had just continued to be a nostalgia line, like it was pre-CW, this wouldn't matter nearly as much. Each figure would be more exciting (to me, at leadt) as it stood on it's own.
...but then that places the burden of originality onto the true mainline, which Cyberverse is also conveniently lacking in.

Indeed.
The nostalgia series should be what it was: a fun sub-line for collectors that kids can also enjoy with the main line being tied into the current cartoon as the focus. That should be the main line.
We should all be going: "Wow! Look at the new toys for Cyberverse!" while also going: "And nice stuff too for the nostalgia line too."
The rot came in after Prime's First Edition line. The focus to the nostalgia line becoming the main line seemed to start happening around then. Hey, I love the mostalgia stuff. Can't get enough of it but it can't be good for the brand long term if it forgets to keep the focus on high-quality new toys/characters aimed at childen. Heck, even the movies have their own nostalgia line now.
Generations switching from subline to main line is not good overall for Transformers. We risk the demographic shifting upwards. Remember what happened to GI Joe.

Heck, even the movies have their own nostalgia line now. I think it's further back than that. I don't think things have been quite the same since the end of the Unicron Trilogy. Everything non "Generations" since then has had a different styles to what Transformers robots consistently had (with the possible exception of Beast Machines) up until that point. I also don't think the diversity with three plus lines going at once is helping things. In the fight for shelf space you're increasingly finding stuff you want is being squeezed out.

If Generations is treated as a mainline, then it needs to offer new things in the story it's trying to tell, instead of just repackaging the same old stories, along with the same old characters, portrayed with the same old (but slightly tweaked) designs.
With only slight changes, this line could have done just that. Instead of a pre-earth story, they could have gone back further, and made it a pre-war story. "The War for Cybertron." Make it a literal war for cybertron. The Quintessons invade. The Decepticons are the front line, under the heroic command of Megatron, while the Autobots are a civilian organization.
This really would showcase a lot of new elements and twists on classic themes. We've never had quintesson toys before. And with army builders, the amount of unique figures they'd need is far less than the autobots or decepticons. We could have military/soldier themed autobots (like Ironhide and Warpath) as Decepticons, with science and political themed decepticons (Shockwave, Starscream) as Autobots. We could see how Megatron falls from grace, as he becomes authoritarian, dictator, then despot.
And with the toys presented in Siege, this really wouldn't take much in the way of change. Just a change of presentation. Recycling old nostalgic themes, but presenting them in a new package in a story that's never been told before.

Personally, I have much preferred everything since CW, than before it, but that is also partly related to the evolution and innovation of the toy designs. Siege Sideswipe an Optimus do look a lot better than their previous iterations.
I absolutely agree that there is a real danger that they are catering towards an older demographic which might have major implications for the future.
It's scary to think kids who were exposed to the 2007 movie toys are now the adults with disposable income- I think that is why Studio Series exists.

New characters, new situations, new stories please. Don't mind the occasional nod back to what went before but the lines have all got stuck in a rut with remaking/repackaging the same core few characters and situations. It can't last forever. Shake things up ala Beast Wars.

Sometimes the cases have their own code. So E3576 could be case of Magnus and Shockwave for example.
