So the Battlemasters are Targetmasters.
Firedrive was the name of Hot Rod's Titan Master and the Targetmaster Firedrive looks similar to Takara's Legends Hot Rod's Targetmaster.
Sideswipe looks fab. Is he a combiner - Sideswipe is one of the missing Diaclone Autopbots in CW/POTP
Prime's vehicle is odd. The stuff above the cab....

I was half hoping these were going to suck as I’ve been spending too much money on TFs the last few years.
But darn they look good. Interesting Op very much looks like a remould of his PotP self. Truck is a bit weird but they have marked it as a Cybertronian truck. Eh, whatever.
Targetmasters though. Sweet! Especially if they’re going to come with more FX pieces. They’re what we should’ve gotten as a follow up to Titans Return in the first place I think.

So I'm not alone in feeling like Optimus' truck mode is unnecessarily weird.
It looks like they wanted to take G1, make him Mad Max, but didn't have the stones to take it all the way.
I like Sideswipe better than his Universe version. Here's hoping a proper Sunstreaker follows!

The Cybertronian alt modes don't go far enough for me. They look more like near future earth vehicles. However Sideswipe's robot mode looks pretty good, and separated from the need to be a combiner actually looks spot on for the character. Hope we get Sunstreaker and Red Alert from that.
Sideswipe as a choice of character also suggests they're continuing to run through the G1 characters rather than totally resetting.

I am VERY HAPPY that the line wide gimmick is now swapped out into the accessories! No more removable, losable heads! No more simplified homogenous transformations to force everyone into being a combiner!
I *have* spotted something that bothers me a bit. Not enough to be a dealbreaker, but enough that it makes the toys look silly-
The weathered effect tampos. They don't have the money to bring it to it's logical conclusion... and end up with shiny new vehicles with illogically random weathered bits, like Optimus' front windows, and two random squares on the upper back of his truck, with the rest of it being shop floor new.
Or Sideswipe's robot mode with severely weathered legs and waist, but this immaculate chest.
It's going to bother me because they don't have the budget to do the whole thing, but this "just a few bits" will continue to look disjointed and make me wish they'd spent that money on better details. Not a dealbreaker, but a slight irritant.
BUT NO MORE GIMMICKS!!! NO MORE COMBINERS!!!

Also gives rise to the possibility of clean repaints, but I'm not convinced they'd do that.

They've designed a whole line just for him. That aside... Hurrah! A G1-accurate Optimus Prime! When was the last time anyone can remember having one of those, eh? I hope he comes with a Matrix, too! They've never done that! ... Nnnng. Okay. I was kinda hoping that they'd go in a different direction, especially given the winner of the PottoP fan poll. But clearly the design team have their heads stuck in "G1 FOREVER!" mode, and so... here we are. So. Targetmasters being sold as individual figures to replace the Titan Masters and Prime Masters. I guess I can see this working (aside from the bit where we're actually able to find them in stores). Somehow doesn't seem quite as interesting - much as I love the Prime Masters (Pretenders!) the Titan Masters were possibly better, since they came with a little transforming vehicle, which just seems to have more play value. That said, these'll be compatible with most any other figure of any other line, so yeah, this'll work. Sideswipe looks great. Of course he does. Prime... is G1 Prime that turns into a truck with a hat. That's... just odd. And ANOTHER missed opportunity. They've said that this is a "Cybertronian" mode, but it's clearly just a Mack Truck. With a hat. They could've given us the War Within/Chaos Era-style Prime that we've been begging for for ages (well, I have), or even this:  But no. Oh well. I'll buy it anyway. Because of course I will. As for the blast effect gimmick... Well, given that I'm often repurposing TLK Leader Megs' exhaust flames for other things, I can't complain. But these are gonna go missing *really* fast. They give me more fear than even the Titan Masters. Interested to see what else is going to be revealed next week though... |

In fairness, it's the first G1 Optimus update we've had in voyager that takes a stab at his iconic look.
All the Optimi we've had in tbis size either heavily skirt around it (classics, cw), or go after another design altogether (tr)

Oh! Is it a voyager? I'd just assumed leader. If it's a Voyager I'll have it for the robot mode. That'll look good in the display. It's a good looking op. A truck with a hat though is indeed disappointing as an alt mode.
I mean, who wears hats these days anyway?
