If I'm reading the subsequent stories right, isn't there speculation that price was for dealers buying boxes of two, rather than the price for Optimus himself?
Regardless, it'd be outwith my price range anyway. It looks a nice toy, but like several of the other more recent expensive MP figures (Dinobot I'm looking at you), I'm content to watch other people's Youtube videos and stick to the cheaper stuff.

I have to admit I am liking the look of it. I can hear snippets from More Than Meets The Eye looking at it.

Fake windows on robot still disappointing. Either that or there's an impressive amount of engineering to hide the windscreen wipers.

Well, I have to say, as someone who finds themselves compelled to buy every Optimus Prime... that's awful.
I mean, it doesn't look like a terrible toy in and of itself. And it certainly does look like a very faithful recreation of how Optimus Prime looks in the cartoon. The problem, you see, the problem is is that those cartoons were animated by a sweat shop in Korea, and should in no shape or form be the basis for a religiously-adhered-to aesthetic.
Even as a kid I understood that what we saw on the page or on the screen was an approximation of the actual toys - and that was okay. And sure, G1 Prime had wheels everywhere, no articulation, an utterly different head (unless Mike Collins is drawing)... but that was okay. And it remains okay because we've got MP-01 and MP-10, who both do perfectly good jobs of turning from a truck into an approximation of the animation model, with most of the kibble hidden. And no, neither of them are as animation accurate as this one, but they're also more interesting to look at. This one is just flat.
The biggest problem for me, however, is that although it's animation accurate... it's not accurate to all his animation appearances. Putting aside even the Rebirth for now, there's a distinct difference to how his face looks in Arrival From Cybertron to how it does in the movie, which this one is clearly based on. How many more MP Primes do we need before we can have a completely animationa accurate one?
Okay, so I had a lot of reservations about MP-10, too, since I was one of the few people who liked MP-01. And when I finally held MP-10 in hand, I could see what was good about it. I may indeed yet have a similar experience with MP-44. Although right now I'm more interested and waiting to see what the MP-44+ with toy accurate colours will be like. (You know they'll do it. Right after Nemesis Prime, Sleep Mode, and any other variant.)
Although still, for that price... it'd have to be a pretty damned special repaint.
Unless he also came with a spare head with a white crest. That'd do it.

Nothing justifies that price-point for a toy that size. But I think it's looks good though. Very good. Sunbow-tastic. They've pulled out all the stops, Sunbow-wise anyway. But in my mind MP10 remains superior, because he's 'THE PERFECT BLEND'.

I just realised that the stand for making him fly is actually the rolling repair drone station base and arm from his trailer.
Whatever engineering they've done to the legs though is mightily impressive, although I haven't seen a clean shot of them in alt-mode and the small bits I have seen look a bit of a mess, which undermines the engineering a little.

I much prefer the look and proportions of MP-10 anyway, but more importantly MP-10 has a pretty neat, intuitive transformation (clever but also fast to do) and looking at these pictures I wonder if they've sacrificed that for some kind of cartoon purity.
There are also many characters suitable for an MP, from any era, that it would have been more interesting to see. This feels like such a waste of time.

It's tough. I've really embraced the Sunbow with my MPs now, partly because writing about the cartoon has made me much more fond of it, and partly because the more uniform look makes them look more like an intentional collection. I'd be happy with both Primes because as said before, there's something about MP10's legs that just isn't right to me. His calves are too chunky. However, MP10 doesn't have the massive backpack MP44 has, which I think will look as obvious as Pottop Leader Prime's. Also, I realise the economies are different and the recent 3P Primes we've seen don't have the trailers and accessories, but how can Magic Square do this for £85 in comparision to £350 plus? What is Takara's game? There is very little between them visually.

It does look really nice, fun features, I just can't believe they want much for it. This is actually quite a turning point for our hobby if it's really the case.
And as Galvajim says above, there are other more-or-less A-listers who still require the MP treatment.

It's supply and demand. If the market shows that consumers will spend 50,000 yen on a TF toy then more will be made. Just say no.

copy and paste my opinion written elsewher Nicer than I expected, still not really sold on it. I think the problem is that Im not really a fan of that animation model. Im almost certain the animation model used in the movie was tweaked, or maybe it was just better drawn, either way Ive always liked movie Prime a lot more than tv Prime. I don't think this will be a big enough disaster to get the sort of reduction I'd need to buy it. Maybe if its a success there'll be enough runs that it eventually comes in at a decent price. Or Hasbro will pull a Rodimus, ditch the trailer and the stuff and just release the the robot. The more I look at it the more frustrating I find it. The thing I mostly didn't like about MP-10 was the legs, they looked far too generic, certainly not looking particularly toy or cartoon inspired and suffered from an oddly wide stance. MP-44 improved on the legs. Though, Ive always thought Movie Primes legs were reproportioned, lowering the knee to make it sit more centrally on the leg and would have preferred to see that here, but overall, they got the legs right. But with MP-44 it's the torso thats not working for me, it is (sadly) cartoon accurate, but most of the time that simply meant a collection of boxes badly stacked on top of each other. Fine for a 35 year old cartoon, less an insanely expansive toy in 2019. If it was the better stacked and detailed boxes of TFTM Prime, I'd probably be a lot more annoyed at not being able to afford it. So mixed feelings. It's also making me want to see MP-10 in cartoon colours. Which someone was kind enough to provide
