To be fair, if you've never owned the toys there's no reason you'd know that, as they were toy-only features.

To be fair, if you've never owned the toys there's no reason you'd know that, as they were toy-only features. Big Phil's confirmed he's own 'em both, Blue'. That means Doc's yanking our chains. He's yanking our chains hard and whistling dixie.

Is Doc', like, being serious here? Or is just yanking our chain? No Transformers fan can not know the stuff he seems to not know. Soundwave's belt clip he can get away with, but not knowing what the square hole is for and that minibots can ride in Prime's trailer...?! My Godfathers... HE'S WORSE THAN ME!!! I am being sincere!!! Mini Autobots do not go in Prime's trailer. The big Autobot cars do this. A Japanese ad confirms this. -Ralph

Enough of Phil's mad conspiracies. I must now make my vote. I did not have any of the 3 as a nipper. A few kids had Megatron but I thought he was rubbish and every copy I saw was broken not long after they were acquired. Only as an adult did I learn to appreciate it though I would say it's not a great toy for kids.
Optimus is of course iconic and would not be out of place on toy shelves even today. I am glad the toy is still re-issued every few years. I have owned various versions (I regret moving on the G2 one) but have retained the New Year Convoy 2002 release. I only came to Optimus as an adult. He was too expensive and hard to find for anyone I knew to have him back in the day. I only knew the cab robot as 'the ghost of Optimus Prime' ie the white version that came with Ultra Magnus. As great as this mould is I think the Laser Rod Prime mould is just slightly better.
I must give my vote to Soundwave. The original toy has never been bettered.

Is Doc', like, being serious here? Or is just yanking our chain? I had been wondering that myself... If so, it's justified in light of the entertainment value he has provided. To be fair, if you've never owned the toys there's no reason you'd know that, as they were toy-only features. Pretty sure Prime did the square hole trick in G2 US #1. Martin

Gah! If I'd thought some of the previous ones were difficult, this one was a real brain bender. Everyone has really good criteria to win out:-
Soundwave/Cassette Man has the mystique of being the original Decepticon leader on the first Transformers catalogue I got. He has underlings who clearly have a close relationship to him - and I like the "villain with loyal henchmen" trope a lot. He rather brilliantly turns into something that is actual size - his altmode is literally a real object that he is disguised as, which is a lot of fun. He also has a great character going by his original box bio - devious blackmailer who is watching what everyone is thinking... A truly vile villain!
But he didn't get my vote.
Megatron - is The Maniacal Megatron! His bio establishes him as an iron-fisted tyrant determined to bring the universe to heal. He turns into a gun - a device that has only two purposes, killing something or threatening it. Such a good alt-mode for a villain who is painted in such starkly fascist tones. (The fact that it is a Walther P-38 just makes it all the more fitting. I encountered Megatron long before I encountered the Men from U.N.C.L.E and their wartime surplus P-38s, so my associations were much more with WWII than with jokey comedy spies when I was a kid.). Megatron has great play-value - he is a decent compromise between being accurately scaled and fitting a child's hands - heck, I still think he is more comfortable to wield than at least one of my modern NERF blasters. For an evil space tyrant he has good ergonomics.
But he didn't win either.
Optimus Prime/Leader Truck: The winner, by a nose. If we are talking about play-value then this has it in spades. Three main components - a truck cab that turns into a humanoid form, Roller the nippy scout, and the fantastic mobile base that is Combat Deck. I love the way everything packs away neatly into the vehicle mode, but is all there ready to spring into action when needed. Combat Deck is still one of the great base modes in Transforming Robots, it is just so fun - really nailed the play pattern. And he benefits from the fact that he is something that I might see screaming down the bypass across the bottom of St Athan, sending good Welsh spray flying up into the air. I was far more likely to see a truck that looked like Prime than I was to see a P-38 (*) that looked like Megatron in real-life.
Karl
(*) - specificity intended, as I did know someone who brought a .45 caliber automatic pistol to Junior School one day to impress me so "less likely than seeing a gun" would be technically inaccurate. The absolute %$&$&$&ing he got from his father as a result of this was perhaps not the outcome that he was expecting mind you...

It wasn't me, but ya gotta give Megatron a break. It was the early 80's and they turned a handgun into a robot! Amazing! He's got a lovely big arm canon, his stock makes that even larger canon. Megatron's cool! #MegatronLove
