Despite the obvious problems the character would have in day to day real-life as described by Martin, I must vote for SHRAPNEL. He was the only Insecticon I had as a kid, his powers are impressive (as well as the electric death beams he can also control electrical devices!), he's great in the cartoon, great in the comic, and is a damn good toy! Although I am still mad at him for blasting Prowl that time.

The Diaclone Insecticons had red cockpit covers, so presumably that was the last colour to change on the moulds.

You would have thought Shrapnels inability to get through doorways should have saved him from being chucked out of Astrotrain in the movie. (I can now picture a very funny deleted scene of Ramjet trying to fit him through!).

Yeah, the red windows are from the Diaclone moulds. And the black plastic parts look brown [see Bombshell's legs], which is also Diaclone colours. I voted Kickback, it was the first one I got as a kid and I liked the toy. They're all decent though, and work well as a group. For a bit of fun, if you've not seen them before, there was a bootleg company in the 80s called Four Star who would modify Transformers moulds. Here's Bombshell as a scorpion, and Kickback as a praying mantis. Going back to the 85 minis and Pre-TFs, this site has concept sketches of Cosmos and Seaspray.Along with the sketch of the unproduced Ark playset and a red proto Pipes. |
