I have actually played with both Star Saber and Deathsaurus, and it's no contest - Deathsaurus all the way.

He really isn't. Look at that silly sword, with the massive hilt going almost half-way up its length.
He's basically a jet version of Powermaster Optimus Prime (which was also a naff toy) but without the benefit of looking like Optimus Prime.
Deathsaurus is a giant chrome-plated dragon with two little triple-changing animal/gun/breastplate friends!

I have actually played with both Star Saber and Deathsaurus, and it's no contest - Deathsaurus all the way. Martin So what was Deszarus like? Never handled one. I've got the KO Galaxy Shuttle and it's OK but nowhere near as good as it looks. Greatshot is obviously just Sixshot I think I've handled a Victory Leo once. A brick, but nice looking. But Star Sabre.... Optimus Prime as a Jet/upgraded Jetfire. Brainmaster gimmick, lots of modes AND, as we'll see next week, he combines.

I've had a go at both Star Saber and Victory Leo. Saber has a few nice features but much prefer Victory Leo out of the two.

So what was Deszarus like? Never handled one. Refreshingly different. Almost like they decided to do a new PM Prime-sized Terrorcon version of Soundwave, and give him massive amounts of metallic shiny bling. Recommend this guy's highly entertaining YouTube review: Martin

Gosh, how did we never get an exclusive homage to that out of the TR Grotusque et al toy?!? There are even TR moulds that could be used for his partners!

RIDICULOUS!!!
Nice looking toy though... Need to study the pictures of all these more before I can vote.

It's at times like this I realise in all the TF related guides and references we have, there isn't one that is like a quick reference - a simple family tree split by year of all the different toys, their subgroup and gimmick. I've thought about doing that myself many times.
I look at this and think, there's a Japanese TF with little beasts as friends. Does that mean he's a Powermaster? Brainmaster? Breastmaster? Who did he lead? which group is he in? which line is he from? I have to go and look it up every time because my brain can only remember/retain things I learned in the 1980s and nothing since. I just want something like a single sheet poster that has year/subgroup/gimmick/toys. Yes, I might do that.

I've thought about it for ages, but keep thinking surely someone has done that somewhere. If not, I might have a go. Currently I'm putting the finishing touches to the Micromaster Guide I started and am working on a idea for Blue's TFN zine.

That's a fantastic idea, Pinwig!
And as to the poll, despite the logic behind picking Deszarus over Star Saber, and despite the fact that's probably who I'd buy if I had a choice right now (although that's mostly because I already own the Robot Masters and Masterpiece versions), I'm going to have to vote for Star Saber anyway, just because, as ever, he's the one that jumps out at me more from the catalogue. Might not be the best in hand, but it's the best on the catalogue. Optimus Prime-like jet leader? Sorry, that's me doomed.

I'm going to have to vote for Star Saber anyway, just because, as ever, he's the one that jumps out at me more from the catalogue. Just 'cos they've stuck him in the foreground and given him better lighting and shoved the superior toys to the back in shadow! Tch. Optimus Prime wannabe, more like. He's just a johnny-come-lately with a silly sword. Martin
