Mirage is, I believe, supposed to be a Lola Indycar. The design mimics the early 90's Newman/Haas, but copyright being what it is, they couldn't keep the black sidepods. So a muted blue/green to hint at Mirage's traditional Ligier French Racing Blue, that is ALSO reminiscent of the at the time successful Players Reynard Indycar seems to work okay for me.
Given the other, much bigger, differences in Machine Wars to G1 names, this is one of the closer homages. I like him.

(yes I'm surprised there's no pre existing MW or Flipchanger thread!) Andu is claiming on twitter that "MW Mirage was lovely!" and has "lovely colours." Please stand with me in disavowing Turnbull of this absurd notion! Um, I like the colours. It is a few shades off of British Racing Green,(Or for that matter the lovely green on the early Jaguar that my father had a 1:48th scale Diecast of) so in that regard it feels pretty racing car-ish to me. In fact, of all the flipchangers I would say that it was Prowl that got the short end of the stick really. Both the tow-trucks have fairly believable colour schemes, Thundercracker has some sort of throw-back 1970s Southeast Asia scheme, Skywarp is pretty much the same colour as the EAP - his alt-modes ancestor on one side of the family, Megaplex has odd "invasion stripes" details but otherwise is in real-world colours... Prowl on the other hand just looks like he hasn't been painted up in team colours yet because the primer hasn't dried. Karl

Mirage is good, but loses points for not being as odd as Prowl as a racing car. Though Prowl is beaten for oddness by hubcap obviously.
Megaplex is great
Machine wars Thundercracker rules! To borrow a phrase.
Wait till you see what I have in mind for MWAMTC.

I have the MW Prowl. I got him years ago off Under3/Bogatan/Andy. I think it was a trade for a Classics Starscream.
....I've got the toy-line right, haven't I?

I couldn't have said what the trade was for which suggests you got the better end of it. I think I still need to acquire Starscream Whirl and Soundwave. And to reacquire Prowl at some point.

I have Mirage, Sandstorm, and whichever green jet. I was never sure if the green one was Megatron or Megaplex (dyslexia keeps me confused on this one) and from all my knowledge about the MW toyline, I'm pretty sure no one else is sure which is which, either.
Which is exactly an amazing thing when dealing with a clone meant to pretend to be the leader of the decepticons.
I didn't have much choice on sitting this line out back in the day, as I had no disposable income of my own (not even an allowance). And given the choice of begging between new toys, I chose Beast Wars. Would very much like to finish this line. Lack of Thundercracker is one of the biggest holes in my collection.

The green one is Thundercracker!! www.tfu.info/1997/Decepticon/Thundercracker/thundercracker.htmUnless you mean the more bluey-green one? In which case... yeah. No-one knows which is which - Megatron was shipped on a Megaplex card and vice versa... UNLESS they were on the right cards and the wrong artwork was used!

Yeah I know what thundercracker looks like. I'm talking about the green megatron/megaplex mold.
I thought I'd established that, but my bad if I wasn't clear enough.

Yeah I know what thundercracker looks like. I'm talking about the green megatron/megaplex mold. I thought I'd established that, but my bad if I wasn't clear enough. And this demonstrates the problem with my colour-blindness - I didn't realise there was any hint of green to either version of the Megatron/Megaplex flipchanger. I would have tended to say that one was blue and one was grey. (I have an odd problem with edge cases - I used to have a red-shirt and a dark pink shirt, but the pink shirt looked like a lighter shade of red to me, rather than a different colour. I have a similar issue with purple and blue - at a certain point my brain just calls purple "blue" and has done with it - and that point is much deeper into the purple than most folk.) I knew which mould you meant though Jetty -and you are quite correct, no-one is really sure which one is which, and I think that includes the folk who made them in the first place! Karl

Those two look reasonably similar to Dirge and Hoist. The other get isn't too far off from Waspinator, either.
But given that two of them were obviously meant to be Mirage and Megatron, I'm skeptical these would have been their actual colors. (Though Megatron is reasonably close to his established G2 colors) I also suspect that the tow truck would have been Optimus Prime.

That's the toy used for Skidz RID - was it altered at all apart from colours?

Nope. No release of any of those four molds has any alterations beyond color.

I never put much thought into how those four molds would have been used in G2. But looking at other new molds, here's my best guess. They would each be used twice, and each mold would be used for each faction.
Wave one • Megatron- The raptor was very obviously designed to be megatron. What colors it'd be in is anyone's guess. • Mirage- Same story as Megatron • Optimus Prime- They seemed pretty strongly to work hard to make sure Optimus and Megatron came in pairs, and they seemed to want them at multiple price points. Chest windows, and long nosed truck. Granted the head looks nothing like him, but that never stopped them in G2. Colors also anyone's guess, but probably red. Granted this is sketchy, but megatron lends weight to it. • Starscream- The other jet. Same as Optimus, pretty much. I'll admit this guess is sketchier than Optimus.
Wave two New names, new decos. The ground vehicles are now decepticons, and the jets are now autobots.
Everything in mid to late G2 fits this pattern, except for the autorollers. One release as new characters, one release with name reuses. One release as autobots, one release as decepticons.
Edit: I was thinking about the two new cancelled molds when I typed that. I had forgotten the cancelled Optimus and Hound repaints. Meaning that even the autorollers fit this pattern of original/legacy character and faction switching repaints.

Nope. No release of any of those four molds has any alterations beyond color. That's not strictly true: the jets change between their BW II and RID uses, something to do with how the nose folds during the auto TF. I can't remember if it's an assembly error in the earlier versions, or a mold change to the later ones but it would be odd for the same assembly error to afflict three runs (two in MW, one in BWII) the same way.

I have a red KO of the Hoist mould with, i think, a clear blue head and in those colours it screams prime

You know, if the mold wasn't likely dust, I kinda think I'd like it in movie optimus deco.
And that could have made an interesting cheap store exclusive somewhere. A VS twopack of the wrecker as movie optimus, and the raptor as movie starscream.

Coincidence that Megatron looks like hes in BW basic colours?
Dammit I want that bright green Mirage.
Certainly it wouldnt have been a stretch to imagine Megatron, Prime, Mirage and (insert strike jet, but presumably Starscream)
