Uh, you have seen the cartoon where Soundwave's tape deck mode fits in the palm of Spike's hand? Blaster, yes, a boom box, no question. But Soundwave looks nothing like that. I did not have access to the cartoon as a child so I went by the comic where it was a big boombox. -Ralph

Ummm... The tapes would argue your point - If is cassettes were C90 tapes then he could be bigger, but as it is we can deduce an upper limit to his size. He has to be small enough that the cassettes fit snugly into the cavity for the as we observe that they do, so therefore he must be small enough to be in the same scale as the cassettes, which we know are "Mini", and can work out the size of by comparing them to the real-life Mini-Dat cassettes that they are disguised as. (Which are about half the size of the C90 cassettes used by most radio-cassette players... If Soundwave was a huge boom-box the tapes would rattle around inside a cavity far too large for them. The fact that they fit firmly inside his the cavity puts an upper limit on his size in alt-mode. He can't be wider than one-and-a-half/two Mini-Dat tapes. Ergo, this would suggest that he was not huge.

I had no idea mini tapes existed when I was a kid. I thought all tapes were c90 and the like in size!

I was just about to say exactly what Legios has done so well! The tapes dictate Soundwave's cassette mode size.

Was he a boombox in the comic....? Not entirely conclusive in any event, there were some issues with sizing in the comic in some cases. Skids springs to mind, who is always depicted with a vehicle mode significantly larger than it should be. (Ratchet and Ironhide similarly are often drawn far wider than they are - in both cases mostly because US-based artists didn't realise how small they actually were, because they weren't something that was particularly common over there - with America's tendency towards larger motor-vehicles compared to Japan's tendency towards smaller ones that deal better with their crowded cities.) The Cassettes have disguised themselves by slotting into normal-sized cassette decks in fiction (e.g. Ravage into O's ghetto-blaster in US #2, Ratbat into Buster's tape player in 'Toy Soldiers', and Laserbeak in 'Laserbeak's Fury') so maybe they can assume either size at will?

Okay.
When I was a kid, I didn't know about the mini tape thing either. I always assumed the tapes were normal sized, but that Soundwave was a type of Walkman. Hence the belt clip.
That seemed to make the most sense.
It was a bit of a mind blow to discover that Megatron, Soundwave, and Reflector were all kinda meant to be life size.

I didn't have Soundwave as a lad, but I did have a walkman which I did clip to my belt. So had I owned Soundwave then yes I would have clipped him to my belt.

Then you haven't.
I watched McFeely's THE BASICS: SOUNDWAVE video. No mention of belt clipping and the bits of cartoon featured showed Soundwave as clearly FAR TOO LARGE AND CHUNKY to fit on a belt!
Case closed.

The cartoon is the inferior continuity well known for animation errors and glitches.
Only the toys are the true root of all things. And Soundwave is a small micro-cassette player with a belt clip.
The Guardian of Forever has seen it. And spoken.

It took me like... 20 years to realize Soundwave's cylindrical weapons are batteries. I didn't realize this until sometime in the 2000s. I'd had no clue his back opened.

Watching 'More than Meets the Eye' part 2 right now. Soundwave easily fits into Spike's hand. He's a Walkman, Doc', he's a Walkman. Thus belt clippable.

IT CLIPPED ON MY BELT!!!!!

I had a Walkman knock-off made for Argos by some company or other, it was similarly large and was definitely heavier than Soundwave. Both were quite capable of clipping onto my belt, without pulling my trousers down. In fact, Soundwave pulled at the belt considerably less than the Walkman KO did.

You forget how big these things actually were in the early 80s. They only went slimline much later on.

I suppose the fact that Soundwave's guns, when in battery mode, are more or less the size of AA batteries suggests that the toy is actual size.
