I've been enjoying The Beano so much of late that I have subscribed. At that price it's worth 90p-ish a pop. There's some genuinely funny stuff every issue: really high quality humour strips. I can always pass the issues on to the local reading donation box when I am done with them.

The Summer Special tells a very funny single story. It also comes with loads of stickers!!! -Ralph You hate stickers.

I dislike stickers on toys when toy technology progressed beyond them for many years so companies now cheapen out by replacing detail with poor quality stickers while putting the prices up. I enjoy stickers in all other contexts!!!

Made a trip to Dundee to see The Beano exhibition in the McManus art allery (lovely building). Nicely presented with not a hint of looking down on the medium. Now I have seen some Leo Baxendale original art with my own eyes rather than the lower quality repro of the time I now understand why folk have started banging on about him in recent years. Superb craftmanship.
Also nice to see a copy of The Beano #1 in person without having to pay several thousand pounds!
Alas while the museum tat shop had general Beano merchandise there was nowt made specifically for the exhibition.

Which I only got round to reading today as I fell behind! Good issue. The quality of The Beano is quite high these days. It makes me giggle whereas Rebellion's two Cor/Buster specials did not.

Hmmm. Beano recently moved from sending subs copies in plastic bags to recyclable paper ones. This should be a good thing. Unfortunately, every copy now arrives stuck with glue to the paper bag, leaving big grey splodges and impossble to store (I can't get the glue off). I can see myself cancelling the sub and going back to buying from newsstands...when the shops re-open.
No point having eco-friendly packaging if it wrecks the product inside! 2000ad moved to eco-friendly packaging that doesn't stick to the comics!

This year's Dandy Summer Special also has a new story! Meanwhile, Fatty is now Freddy. Cue people who don't read the Beano losing their minds: downthetubes.net/?p=127346-Ralph

I did my usual duty and picked up the Summer Specials. The usual quality though the Dandy one is hard to find!
Also got the 85th anniversary issue.

The summer specials were hard to find the online store wasn't selling them this year Wh Smiths had an exclusive window or some deal like that. Not on sale in Ireland though but I managed to find a seller in the UK to post them over. The 85th issue was nice but could have done without the celebrities and would have preferred older characters to return.
I like the Beano but I want to love it may be a few ongoing strips like the weekly Spirou comic in France and the old Winker Watson in the 1990s. I know it isn't made for my age group and will never be like it was 80s/90s but it probably could with "something" new and hopefully a Dandy relaunch as well.

I still dip in from time to time as I think it's still very good. No space for them so they go to local charity place. I'd like trades of Nigel Aucherterline's strips. Brilliant writer.
It does boggle my mind that DC Thompson don't have decent collected editions output for this stuff. It just vanishes into the ether.
