Shocking news in the catalogue thread that great collector Phil has never owned Hubcap! It is a great wee mould. Pictures make it look like a Bumblebee clone but it's quite different in hand.
Members of the jury: I put it to you that Phil should acquire one! In G1 or G2 flavours!

No, pictures make it look like yellow Cliffjumper (of 1984 catalogue and Ladybird book fame), and it's just like yellow Cliffjumper in hand. I had a Hubcap. I did enjoy him but he is hindered by the fact he's nigh-identical to the Bee/Cliff and also yellow! Mad choice!!!

I also have a Minibot quandry... The only mold I don't have is Bumblejumper/Bumper. There are the Mexican(?) versions as the original is ridic hard to find.
What to do?

Hubcap being yellow does not make sense only in modern "everything with this robot mode design absolutely MUST be a Bumblebee repaint" context.
Hubcap is drastically different than Bumblebee, while being a retool of Cliffjumper.
Hubcap was also released the year Cliffjumper left shelves (and Bumbles was probably planned too).
So while being visually similar to Cliffjumper, making him yellow makes sense to distinguish him from the mold many kids already had. Bumble was carried over for a third year due to popularity, but probably was not originally planned too.
He was originally to be white, while Tailgate was to be yellow. Personally I think flipping them was the better choice. Both molds look better in their production colors.
There's basically no real reason for him to have not been yellow, without the ability to see 30+ years in the future where stubborn fans demand every robot with a similar shape be repainted out of one mold.

Huh, good points CJ. Could Hubcap have been seen as a Bumblebee replacement...?
And also, now I think about it, Hubcap's personality is pretty interesting... I think I skipped it 'cos of the whole 'colour' thing.. Hubcap's kinda strange isn't he? Affable, but no one trusts him. What exactly is Bob suggesting he is here?

Yes - but only in a completest G1 type of way (the same way everyone in the world should also own a Bumper/Bumblejumper).
But as said a million times - Hubcap should have been a different colour than Bumblebee. Even in G2 he couldn't get this right as he just copied Cliffjumper.
The only things that differentiate him from Yellow Cliffjumper is a lack of a spoiler and his Velma from Scooby Doo red face.
After all the effort his wave mates went to to not look like their clones, he just couldn't be bothered.

Yeah, I was also confused when I first saw him in the shop (Zodiac, I believe) - although I was a little younger, I'm sorry to say. But yeah, I thought he was just another Bumblebee, and after realising he was neither 'Bee or Clfifjumper I wondered why they'd bothered to release a third of a similar style mold. Because clearly I'd not been paying attention to the family Datsun. Or the see- strike planes. |
