I'm going to go with the Monsters as the inner robots inner orientation positions match the shells (with the exception of Birdbrain).

Hasbro Pretender Monsters Monstructor Takara Dinoforce Dinoking I have a serious confession to make here- until I read this post I had never realised the Western shell molds were different to the Japanese ones! That's how little attention I have paid to these guys over the years. The Japanese ones are far better!

Also aren't the Pretender Monster shells all Japanese monsters? (Sure I read that somewhere). Which would indicate they were not a Hasbro-led design decision

The answer to the first is neither, both exist in Microchange.
And to the second: NOT Skywarp, he's made up for TFs. Starscream and Thundercracker both have Diaclone Versions

WOW WHAT'S THAT DINO COMBINER?!?! THAT LOOKS BRILLIANT!!! It's the Takara version of Monstructor, Shockers. The dinosaurs are pretender shells for the robots.

Now that the thread has pictures I think it's safe to say that it could very well have easily been one of them. It's hard to say (in my opionion, anyway) simply because the inner robots are *whispers* a bit rubbish really. Sory, I know it's heretical, and yeah, I want a set of these too, but... they're not the best or most detailed toys. They could be anything. So you could really interpret them as anything when coming up with shells for them, and I guess that's what's happened here.
