First things first, I'm talking about in your collection. What do you think, experience, feel, when you are actually holding one of your favourite figures?
Are you just holding an object? A little piece of interesting technology?
Are you holding your past?
Are you holding the exact representative of that character in that universe?
Are you holding your own personal interpretation of that character?
Also, I say "canon" lore because as we all know the cannon lore of transformers including all media is muddy at best.
There are many lores, but this one is mine!
When I was younger I based my characters off of three things when I played with them.
1. What I saw and understood in the g1 cartoon and g1 movie.
2. Toy box contents, in particular, the tech specs.
3. My tiny, tiny, brain. When I played with my transformers I filled in gaps and created storyline to explain why they had to destroy all of humanity by strategically tacking over the living room couch.
I soon became influenced by the toys them selves. as for me at least, I played with the toys I found fun to play with more often, and the toys I found awkward or unappealing least.
So the toys I played with more and liked the best were the most important characters, regardless of other influences.
For instance, I am a real skywarp fan. He is black and purple, simple as that for me. I have always loved him just for that, plus throw in a nice jet mode and he is just such an excellent example of a transformer for me. So as a toy when I had to only choose a few things at a time to have with me, out of the jets, if I had to choose one it would be him. The toys were identical, so it just came down to colour.
As he was my favourite of the jet squad, and I had his original uncorrected tech spec I went with the stats, and still do, but we are talking about my personal skywarp here.
I used the text on the tech spec for flavour, interpreting the bit about how he is not too smart as being an act to fool people into underestimating him. Come on it says it right there on the card, he is super sneaky. In fact he is the sneakiest of decepticons. There are alot of sneaky decepticons, but he is THE sneakiest. and his actual stat says he is 9 intelligence. How was I supposed to take it?
Very quickly he became an integral character.
So what do I feel when I pick up my skywarp?
Am I holding a bumbling fool that met an unknown fate at the hands of unicron?
Am I holding a marvel of human ingenuity and design?
Am I holding a tiny incorruptible piece of my past?
Or am I just holding a toy.
Well, I guess for me it's all... or none sometimes.
But no matter what, when I see a skywarp, I see MY skywarp, the sneaky trickster, decked out in stylish black and purple.
