Say, for argument's sake, a comics publisher approaches you regarding a 480 page Transformers TPB to be filled with your favourite stories; which stories would you pick?
There may also be room in the back for a covers gallery; which covers would you pick for inclusion?
And, finally, what brand new cover image (and which characters) would you like to see drawn, and by who would you like it drawn?

I shall have to think about that.

480 pages, eh?
US #1-8 Wrath of Guardian/Grimlock US #9-12 Crisis of Command Icarus Theory/Dinobot Hunt Victory Headmasters #1-4
That should just about fill it, and apart from references to a previous encounter with Guardian and a message from Goldbug, it's pretty much self-contained.
I suppose there would be an argument for dropping something and inserting The Smelting Pool / The Bridge to Nowhere. Not sure what I'd choose to lose though. Whatever happens, US #1-12 are non-negotiable - they are _the_ Transformers story.

I should know this but how many US issues does 480 pages translate in to?

If it's the average 22 pages then you'd get 21 issues with some pages to spare. But a few issues were over that count - US#1 and 2, 50 and 75. Also the later stories had a 20 page count and indeed in a few slightly less than that. g2 also had the bumper sized issues with 1 and 12.

I'd just like to see the Marvel UK issues that have never made it into TPB form to be in there. Stuff like Man of Iron, The Enemy Within and so on would be nice. Also, as for a covers gallery feature at the back of the book I think I would rather insert some of the TF posters that came with the Marvel UK issues in there as well.

Well, yeah, we'd all vote for that, given what has been released already and want hasn't. But I don't think that's what the thread is asking. I read it as more of a "If you could only have one TF TPB..." sort of thing. Martin

Martin has pretty much covered most of my choices here. Like him I would opt for:-
US #1-12
as the absolutely necessary core. It forms a solid complete story. I would also agree that it would need
Wrath of Guardian/Grimlock Crisis of Command Icarus Theory/Dinobot Hunt Victory
which represent some of the best UK work. Here is where I part company slightly with Martin however. I would almost certainly round out the page-count with:-
The Smelting Pool/Bridge to Nowhere
which would provide a nice closure to the Message to Cybertron sub-plot, effectively closing out the major elements of US #1-12, whilst also being a darned good story in its own right.
If I had the page count remaining after that lot I would like to sneak in:-
Peace
as a final, rather depressing cap-stone to things.
As to front cover art, I'm not really sure there are a few artists I would be inclined to want to see take a swing at it. The frontispiece however would be an Optimus/ Megatron set-to rendered in shaded black and white by Masami Yuki.

Masami Yuki? My addled brain can't place the name right now. -Ralph Sometime associate of the "Headgear" collective. He wrote and drew the "Patlabor: Mobile Police" comic series (most of which, sadly, is not available in translation). He has a fantastically precise art-style that I find to be nevertheless extremely characterful. Karl

Does anyone know the reason why the page coung for the US went down for a while - when we got the issue over 3 issues in the UK. Looking at the US issues i expect it is for the profiles that where included - about 2 per issue.

Could be down to profiles, might be down to budget/licensor approval of certain pages. Any number of reasons.

I read once that the short page count in the later issues were initially down to Simon Furman not quite getting the hang of writing for US comics. Bob Budiansky had experiance in writing for US comics so he could easily manage a 22 page comic strip whilst Furman had previously only worked on UK issues which were a standard 11 page format. The character profiles were just added to bring the page count up to a standard US issue.
