I've had the very random thought that Transformers as a toyline/cartoon/comicbook can't have existed in Michael Bay's movie universe... which got me thinking what toys would Sam have had - Thundercats? He-Man? Did he have GI Joe but without the crossovers? Did Go-Bots exist?

No, you're thinking too far back. He was 17 in the first film, yes? That puts his birth year as 1990. Most likely he'd have been into Power Rangers, then Star Wars when Phantom Menace came out.
