Guys, can anyone shed light on a story I'm trying to find? It was in a compilation I read in secondary school, so early 90s (although it could be older), and it featured a society in which everyone was forced to be equal by means of wearing hideous masks. They received electric shocks to the head to scramble their thoughts every couple of minutes too. The story ended with the mother and son crying over the death of the father (I think) but then forgetting what they were crying for.
It's bugging me!

I've never even heard of that story before but, upon reading it I wish I had. It's quite an interesting yet disturbing piece of fiction that surely kids of a certain age wouldn't understand fully.

I read it in a short story compilation that also featured "The Light Of Other Days" and a story by Isaac Asimov (I think) about a boy who commits murder in a murderless society and becomes a social pariah, made to stink abominably, and who must be ignored by everyone. Pretty sure it also had the Arthur C Clarke story about the Solar wind sailing race too.
I'd love to find that book again but haven't a notion what it was called.

That was one of the things I enjoyed about my school days - the teachers weren't afraid to give us stories that would seem a little unsettling for kids. Todays kids don't know what they're missing.

I read quite a few curious books as a kid but that wasn't one of them. One book I do remember reading was a compilation story book similar to that called Twisted Circuits (I think that was the name) and, although I enjoyed reading it I don't think I should have because it was aimed more at an adult audience than a kids one because it had a fair amount of swearing and horrific scenes in it. The librarian at my local library had obviously not read it because she had no problem lending it out to my eleven year old self!
