The new Ghostbusters was the very dictionary definition of mediocre. I hope next year's effort is better.

Finished the Defenders on Netflix at the weekend. It was okay, not as bad as I'd been lead to believe but definitely at the lower end of the quality spectrum for those shows. I liked some of the character interactions, especially between Danny and Luke, but some other parts seemed forced. Not unlike comics crossovers really.
It seemed an odd choice to kill off Stick in this show rather than in Daredevil though, and I kind of feel his character has been hard done by between DD season 2 and this. At the end of his appearance in season 1 we were left with the idea that he'd grown some attachment to Matt and possibly pushed him away to save him (admittedly it was ambiguous) and that seemed to be ignored in his later appearances, leading to Matt's treatment of him seeming very callous.
Technically I guess Punisher season 1 is up next, and I enjoyed his appearances in DD but I'm also skeptical how much I'll like a solo show built around him.

It's good. I wondered how they'd make a series out of the Punisher but it works. Definitely worth watching.

Been following Riverdale, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Gotham, The Goldbergs and Schooled.
And for some reason found myself rewatching Beverly Hills 90210 from the start. I think originally for the nostalgia kick and in memorium of Luke Perry. Some of the very early episodes really hold up, whilst some are just terrible. Not sure if I'll stick out with all 10 seasons, but already made it to Season 3.

Catching up with James May's recent two part doc on Hornby. We've got a model shop in town, but it's usually empty. I always wonder when passing what sort of industry model kits are these days. I was amazed to hear that Airfix's big 2019 release, a 1:24 Hellcat plane, cost £100,000 in tooling. I thought, can they possibly sell enough to recoup that? But then later in the programme May said it sold out its initial 5000 production run in preorders alone. I checked their website, the retail price for the kit is £120. So 5000 at that price would be £600,000. Obviously they don't sell to retailers at that price, but £20 out of each sale of those initial 5000 would cover the tooling costs. Then of course you need everything else on top of that to produce the kit.
Interesting.

Taking a break from the Marvel shows I decided to rewatch Star Trek TNG from the beginning on Netflix, and just finished season 1 after about 10 days. It was much better than I anticipated!
Going through the first season was the part I expected to be hardest, but I think these early episodes have a worse rep than they deserve. It's not the show at its strongest, but there's no episode which doesn't have some redeeming quality, and some are outright good (Heart of Glory, which I certainly haven't seen in about 30 years, is probably the stand-out for me from this binge).
I'm struck by how much I like all the characters from the start, and also by how professional they all seem; I'm not sure if it's just because it's been a while since I watched an episode, but they come across as more disciplined and mature than I remembered. I'll be curious to see if that's a season one thing and they loosen up as the show goes on.
Looking forward to ploughing on with season two tomorrow.

Just looked up the guest actor, Seymour Cassel, who plays the medical specialist in the TNG season 2 opener as he looked very familiar; he's one of those character actor types who's been in tonnes of stuff and he died just a few days ago

I have been making my way through New Captain Scarlet an episode or two a week on Amazon Prime's video thingy. Great show.
CGI Colonel White is the sensational character find of 2005. NOTHING CAN STOP HIM.

Finished season 2 of TNG after an Easter break. Still loving this project!
The uptick in production values is immediately noticable (as is the dimmer lighting), along with a change in tone - it feels slightly more distanced from TOS.
I really like Dr Pulaski; I know she's not the most loved character, but I never had much of a problem with her and nowadays I appreciate her much more. She's got more presence than Dr Crusher and brings more to the show, and I find it a bit of a shame it didn't work out with her. She even has something of a subtle arc with her changing attitude to Data. I'll miss her.
Guinan seems weirder than ever, almost like a fan-fiction creation, but she has a lot of charm. I most enjoyed her scene where Riker was hitting on her to teach Wes. And there's another thing I've noticed - I don't find Wes annoying, at least not when he's not in the Chosen One role (which I don't think he is at all this season). Worf really starts to come into his own this season, too.
I still really like all these characters, and how professional and mature they generally are; I think of all Trek series (possibly TV series full stop) TNG is the one with characters to aspire to the most.
If I had to pick stand-out episodes they're probably the obvious ones - Q Who, Matter of Honor, The Measure of a Man. The Emissary was also good, and I've long had a soft spot for The Royale.
Season three next, I hope it lives up to my memories - I've rewatched a few episodes from it over the years as I have the DVD box set but never the whole thing; my usual position is that TNG season 3 is pretty much peak television.

Been watching Last Commanders - a sort of combination of Knightmare and The Adventure Game for the kids of today. It's not bad. My only problem is that the jerky first person view from the player characters gives me immediate motion sickness, so I probably won't watch any more, but it's a good effort on CBBC's part. Just started series two, but all of series one is on iplayer currently. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b09qrrrv/last-commanders

I was going to write that people keep telling me how good it is but I can't watch it over here, but I just checked and season one is on Amazon Prime so I can watch it with my partner's account! I will get on that!

I will get on that! You talking about Fleabag, Galvajim? Or... whatever everyone else was talking about? Fleabag's worth the effort to watch. It's... errr... jarring, initially. But the writing is ingenious, and the acting superb. It has to be the most original thing I've seen in a long time. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a brilliant writer.

my usual position is that TNG season 3 is pretty much peak television. yup. Amazingly consistent season of television, even the weakest episodes have something going for them and the strongest are A+ stuff. Not even sure where to start with picking out highlights! Strong character stuff with Picard, Data and Worf especially. With this rewatch I am really appreciating Data as a character more than ever, as well as Spiner's performance - I don't think I appreciated The Most Toys enough back in the day, it's a belter. Worf is really finding his place as well, and I like his relationship with Picard. Even when it's not at the foreground like in Sins it's there; the anguish in his voice when he delivers the news that the Captain is now a Borg is well earnt after this season. Back then I would have died for the kind of serialization we get in Discovery these days, but now as an Old Man I'm much happier with a long string of self-contained episodes which might occasionally nod back to something but have these more subtle character and relationship threads running through. That said, it's fascinating seeing Ronald D. Moore unwittingly starting out Klingon plots that wouldn't resolve until a decade later at the conclusion of DS9. Gosh, I really feel on a slight high after binging this. There are plenty of great episodes still to come but no single season that stands up to this (as I recall).

Top find in CEX this morning. I rarely go in there, but keep a check every now and again to see if I can pick up old DVD releases I'd like on the cheap. Got the Complete Bugs boxset for £12! All four seasons. That'll replace another huge batch of old VHS tapes sat in the loft.
No, it was a good series. It was. I'm not listening. LALALALALALALALALALALA.
