Boo hiss. Medical fasting is never fun. At least religious fasting has the promise of chocolate eggs at the end rather than a needle in the arm.
Speaking of medical tests, I brought the medical form from my Saudi visa application to the doctor's surgery across the road to see if they could understand what it was asking for any better than I could. They could not. The doctor wasn't even sure what some of the boxes were asking for. They had very helpful categories such as "left ear" "right ear" and "surgery" with no hint of what they were expecting her to write in them. I'm emailing my advisor to see if he can help me figure it out.
On a lighter note, today I am both arranging to get my US money at a sliiightly better rate than I was expecting, and booking my tickets for Disneyworld! Woo!

I'm still under a terrible strain I can't go into on a public form. It's been going on for a while now and things are pretty bleak. Some positive thoughts appreciated.

Ah, Fasting blood tests. Never a fun thing. You have my sympathies Phil.
I had one of those days where you just know certain things just aren't going to work out well. It began when I knocked over an (unlit) oil lamp in the kitchen this morning. The base was fine but the top half now fills a dustpan in a variety of interesting shapes.
Then, my afternoon at work was somewhat disrupted by a string of unexpected events which led to my basically getting dne nowhere near what I needed to do. Sometimes though you just have to write the day off and start afresh the next day. So I threw in the towel and left at half-past five to come home to my dinner and a George Pellicanos novel.
Hopefully things will go a little bit smoother tomorrow...

Sending positive thoughts your way Ralph.
Nothing much so far this week. Still no word from the Boss as to whether I'll get all my holiday pay or not. Did manage to get some of my poor plants in the ground though this afternoon. Been sitting around in pots for months!

Ralph can have some good vibes from me. I've got nothing better to do.
But wait! Tonight I have to feed myself and Kingoji, so if neither of us posts for a while, expect the worst...

Likewise, Doc.
Picked up my dollars today. The GP surgery eventually refused to do my visa medical check because the form they were expected to fill in was so vague and ham-fisted they weren't comfortable with it and could see no medical need for me to get a new chest x-ray when last year's one at the Western showed no irregularities and nothing has changed. Had to book with the recommended clinic in London, so I'll have a nice little jaunt to look forward to post-Botcon. Like... two days after I get back while I'm still on holiday. Gotta love it.

Well that was interesting. 'Demon' are a broadband provider who phoned me and left a message claiming I was late with a direct debit payment which happens to be the amount I pay to BT for my broadband. Now they knew my name and my home number which is weird as I am ex-directory and also signed up to TPS. When I phoned them to challenge this they found no note of me on the system though I naturally did not hand over payment details but if they were a subcontractor of BT they would have been able to find me by my name and number.
So I checked my BT account online and the payments are up to date. Then I spent a great deal of time navigating the torturous BT phone system to find a human being to check this. Eventually I was assured there were no problems and they had no idea what I was worried about.
Both contact centres were either in India or by coincidence both were answered by folk with strong Indian accents. Yet different numbers for both.
That's a lot of hassle and worry I could have done without this evening. I'm ready to explode with stress as it is without either being scammed or losing the interweb. Fuck sakes.
I can now make my dinner as I forgot to eat.

No, not a great way to end an afternoon Ralph. I went through something similar a few years back with a debt collection agency looking for someone else who insisted that I must know these people as otherwise how could the company have got my phone number. (The idea that someone might have given them a false number apparently confused them.....). Hopefully all is sorted out now.
Having a rather hectic working week between one thing and another at the moment. Not sure if my backward steps and forward shuffles average out to staying in the same place yet. Hope springs eternal though...

Don't go near ROTF Mixmaster, it'll only make things worse. I could've told you that, Phil. Parcel Farce finally got back to me about the Overlord I bought from Germany whose leg they helpfully shattered in transit. I have learned many things this day. 1) Despite asking for the value of the damaged item and proof of said value, they claim that payments made for damages are based not on item value, but package weight. 2) Their own reference number from their own sticker is not sufficient evidence of posting an item. 3) An eBay invoice and DHL tracking number are both insufficient evidence of postage. They helpfully fail to say what would be sufficient. I'm beginning to think this entire system is set up to prevent people from making claims. -Nick

At least you have yours, I'm still up in the air, don't know if the seller is trying to scam me or it was a legitamate screw up, supposedly the package is back with him having been failed to deliver. Hes resending, but I'm still claiming a paypal refund. If I ever get it I'll happily repay him. Andy

Don't go near ROTF Mixmaster, it'll only make things worse. I could've told you that, Phil. I was treating it as a freebie in with the Hoist. My thoughts on it will follow. Bizarrely Jonathan loves it now that it's in vehicle mode. Parcel Farce finally got back to me about the Overlord I bought from Germany whose leg they helpfully shattered in transit. In other news we looked at a school for Jonathan this morning. Was lovely, they didn't have a problem with his special needs at all.

Hoorah - in preparation for my leaving my current job to start a PhD in October I am having to use up all my vastly accumulated Annual Leave and have booked all of August off. Brilliant. Now to decide what to do with the six days left...

Apparently a friend of mine has become so annoying/distracting at his work that he walked into the office today only to find his workmates had surrounded his desk with a 'booth' made from cardboard boxes...

Glad to hear the special school looks to be ace Phil.
Positive thoughts are always in your direction Ralph. Pulling for ya big style.
I shall help Toy Fu when I can.
In other news - I spent today in the woods with a saw as part of a volunteering project. Cutting back hazel trees to allow them to regrow and leave some space for some "MIGHTY OAKS". Felt really good, well tired and my arms hurt at the end but a very fulfilling day even if I did get cut and a tree poked me in the eye.
Went out with the Elder T for a few beers afterwards and found my Ipad had shipped. Also had a really good blether about politics.

Glad to hear the special school looks to be ace Phil. It's not quite a special school, it's a unit within mainstream school. He'll be in class with everyone else and just taken out for certain stuff If he needs more he can get more, if he needs less they can stick him out into the class. So the adaptability gives us flexibility depending on his development.... it's always possible that at some point the speech and behavioural issues *may* resolve themselves. But not likely....
