Oh Ralph Best of luck, I hope you get something sorted soon. How long is your notice period? A week, which would take me to next Wednesday which I had booked off so Tuesday then. To be officially confirmed. -Ralph

A great shame that this post didn't work out for you, but in the end you have to do what you feel is right for you. And as you say, your health is a very important thing.

And so it begins yet again. Just finished a job app. Got one to do with closing date of noon Friday but I'm too knackered so I'll do it tomorrow night.

Not good that things didn't work out for you in the current position but having seen you literally go grey in the last month I can fully support your choice to remember and prioritise your health. Many folk wouldn't have the sense to notice this or the courage to make the choice.
Well done for getting rolling on the job apps already as well.

Oh dear Ralph. Well, you're right, your own health and sanity must come first. I wish you best of luck with finding something more fitting.
I myself am being kicked out the door of my job on July 31st. The Boss has happily worded all his emails about this to make it sound like it's all mutually agreed upon, a trick to make applying for unemployment more difficult (companies here pay for unemployment claims in part). I never replied to any of his emails or agreed or even ever said I was quitting. But that's what I get for being too trusting when I said I was lobbing a resume out to one place.
Speaking of this place - they aren't going to hire me. I'd kind of figured that already, given it's been a month since I interviewed, but at least I can ignore that now. I have an interview with a different lot lined up for Friday the 9th, so here's hoping with that, as my options are pretty scarce right now.
Fortunately I will be getting my three months vacation time paid to me, so I will have funds until October at least.

Dinogirl, sorry to hear that your boss is being decidedly ungentlemanly about the situation. Hope you manage to find something else soon.
My working week has been..... interesting in a variety of ways. Fortunately I have a public holiday to look forward to - four day weekend, which will be very welcome.
Quite pleased to find a cheap copy of the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost film "Hot Fuzz" in a charity shop near work as well. Been meaning to pick it up for a while as it is a great homage/affectionate parody of buddy-cop movies so finding it for a pittance at the end of a rather variable week did cheer me up.

Sending positive thoughts in a Ralphwardly direction.
In other news: I've returned (had a great time). Actually that's a bit misleading, I've been back for days but I've had to invest in a new laptop which arrived yesterday. Currently busy transferring things across. That may take a while but at least I know I can visit the Hub without having to take the afternoon off.

Sorry to hear things aren't so good Ralph & Dinogrrl. Spent Monday - Wednesday at a conference in Ireland presenting some research I'm doing for work / networking. Yesterday went out with work for a meal to celebrate two colleagues' birthdays. Got called into a meeting just before I left work where my Dean of service area told me that the VC's office had finally agreed to make my job permenant so I'm just waiting for a new contract from HR. Karma soon caught up with me as I now had really bad food poisoning from the meal and it's been coming out both ends since 6pm last night so I've now taken my firsrt sick day in 5 years For anyone looking to lose weight I highly recommend eating at The Rygby Arms in Parbold - I think I've lost 4lbs already

Make sure you listen to the Edward Woodward commentary. I shall indeed do so. I didn't get around to all of the commentaries when I saw it as a rental, so now I have plenty of time to work my way through them. Karl

It's mental. Four ageing luvvies sitting around telling anecdotes about people they worked with and jobs they worked on. And two of them are Woodward & Timothy Dalton.....

I've only managed to get 4 job apps sent off so far: two with closing dates of today, one monday one a week today.
I'm exhausted and not feeling great.
Just checking my emails before heading to Planet Falkirk.

The Swedish chef never ever fails to amuse.
Just got back from St Donat's Castle and the Beyond the Border International Storytelling Festival. Had a glorious time. I've been away from Cardiff for a little over 48 hours, but it feels like I've been away for a week - total relaxation.
Checked into my hotel in Llantwit Major around 5pm on Friday, then set off on the 2-mile country lane hike to the castle. About a minute into the walk, a car pulled up beside me and offered me a lift to the festival. Same thing happened on the way back to Llantwit on the Saturday evening, and also this evening, so I only ended up doing the 2-mile hike three times, having planned for six!
The only trouble with this festival is that there are half a dozen performances going on at any one time, and even though some are repeated during the weekend it means you only get to see a fraction of what's on offer.
I attended the opening ceremony on the Friday evening, which included a mighty five-man Georgian singing troupe, followed by a two-hour performance of the epic of Gilgamesh. On the Saturday I opted for an organised nature walk on the surrounding coastline, through which I met some more very nice people, followed by an academic talk and rich storytelling performance on the Arabian Nights. Then a discussion between an eco-storyteller and a certain environment minister who happens to be my boss (though she wouldn't know me by sight) followed by the best and funniest performance of a tale from the Mabinogion that I've ever seen.
On the Sunday (today) I rounded off my weekend by attending a moving traveller's talk linked to the swallow's migration to Africa, some more Arabian Nights-type storytelling (more suitable for children's ears than yesterday's), a storytelling circle session where everyone was invited to contribute (no, I didn't do mine on alien robots), and a talk on linking archaeology artistically to animation. Then home!
Throw in some full cooked breakfasts, a couple of lamb burgers, a lamb shish kebab and various pints of alcoholic beverage, and that summarises the best weekend I've had in many a month. Weather was great, and hay-fever absent. Roll on the next one in 2012!

Jousting at Linlithgow and sorting through Toy-Fu stuff helped to distract me from my problems for a couple of days. Dreading this week though.

A fine long weekend rounded off last week nicely. The Friday was spent pottering around the house and sorting out a few things.
Then on Saturday it was off to the Jousting at Linlithgow Palace with some folks. The weather was glorious and as ever the Jousting and assorted other reenactments were very entertaining. (I have learned not to trust old beggars, they may very well be Scotland's Greatest Assassin in disguise).
A shame that the heavens opened on the way to Glasgow on the Sunday - it was an unexpected test of my current shoes, which had not been tested against heavy rain, but fortunately they held up to the pounding and I was able to make my way across the city to assist with the Toy-Fu sorting out.
With Monday being a public holiday I have been able to spend today with my feet up watching Doctor Who and doing some reading, a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a Monday.
sadly my week proper starts tomorrow, but at least it is only a four day working week.
