He is getting the train, which is eye wateringly expensive but not as much as booking a flight the day before.

Ring the Doctors and make an appointment anyway. Explain your sick note has run out and you're not well enough to return to work . The only appt they'll give me is 9:30am on Friday!!! My plan now is to phone them at 8am sharp tomorrow and try to get a cancellation appt for some point that day. Then get the bus to work and survive until I have a GP appt. This will hopefully allow me to get today's absence confirmed as A/L. All rather more bother than I would like. Even if I feel fine in the morning I think a few minutes of a GP's time is still sensible in any event and I hope work understand I'm not trying to muck them about. When I'm sitting here I'm ok if a bit woozy. It's just when I try going outside and walking about that my energy drains away. -Ralph

You've had something fairly serious so I am not entirely surprised that it has taken it out of you. I think trying to get a doctors appointment a bit sooner is probably quite a sensible move, hopefully you will be able to get something sooner rather than later.
I have spent most of today inside, mostly because every time I thought about going very far there was a further downpour of rain, and because the wind was howling until about 6pm. Did manage to get out this morning to drop off load number two of donations at the Shelter shop. Now just Load Number 3 to go.
This afternoon I dived out into the garden between showers to try to clear up some of the havoc left by the storms this weekend. Now I am by far not the worst off in the immediate vicinity - a couple of houses along the main road have had most of the branches ripped off their trees for one - but I had a bit of triage to do. My bean canes were leaning at a most unhealthy angle and some of the bean plants had taken a bit of a battering, but I have thrown things back together a bit and we shall see how they go.

Ralph, fairly sure your work will understand and it'll just be procedure to get a sick note itself. Try not to stress.
I went (innocently) to a conference on animal ethics in medical research today. Bloody hell. I think I was the only scientist there and certainly the only one licensed to do animal experiments. I kept my head well down as although the speakers were fair enough and thoughtful even when objecting to such things there were some very vocal anti-animal experimentation folk there - complete with their pro-complementary medicine, yay for vegan and I kid you not revisionist/conspiracy laden versions of medical research history who were rather less so.
Fortunately one of the conference chairs that I already knew made a point of publicly chatting to me and a university chaplain also stood up and lamented how the discussion had appeared to become so one sided and unhelpfully provocative without any attempt to really understand both sides of it.

Went into work for a couple of hours, which was a struggle (though nice to see folk and get out!) then went to see *GP. Signed off for another week, alas. Backdated to yesterday. Advised to build up exercise slowly, but its fine to go out and about to do this as he did confirm that I am definitely past the contagious stage.
Manager very understanding and appeciated that I had been making an effort to get back to work so no worries on that front. He let me remote access the database from home so I could put some important funding related data on. Didn't mind doing it as work have been so good with me even though I have a sick line and it was nice to occupy my mind for a bit though I did struggle somewhat with my concentration. Yeah, did a few hours that won't 'count' but I have no issue with that at all.
-Ralph
*I did glower at the receptionist from yesterday on my way in though.

What is it about Doctors receptionists, it's like they are hired for a lack of humanity. Or maybe working around the sick and hypochondriacs for years just hardens them.
I've been under the weather again for the last few days nothing serious, just a mild flu I guess, but since my uper flu attack before Christmas this is the third or fourth time I've been ill, plus hayfever and I've been not well more than well this year. My doctor wasn't kidding when he said that first flu might weaken my immune system for a while.
It's not had a dramatic effect, but it has slowed holiday preparations a bit which combined with ash clouds is leaving me a bit stressed.

Glad to hear it worked out ok with work and doctors. Reading between the lines it sounds like your present employers are better towards people being sick than some of your past ones have been.

NICK TRAVEL UPDATE! He is on a train somewhere in the UK. He does not know where. There are llamas nearby. -Ralph Well, the UK is at least a starting point for us - and actually there aren't that many places in the country where you will find Llamas so if we really needed to we could narrow it down...... Glad to hear that you had good luck getting hold of a doctor today Ralph. Being signed off work is not nice, but probably better to build up slowly and go back when you are nearer to fighting trim than to go back too early and floor yourself in the process. Bogotan - have a few extra, if belated, calming thoughts. If there is one good thing about all the rain that we have had up here for the last couple of weeks it is that it has damped down the pollen count a long way. It has been nice to be able to skip Hayfever tablets for a while without suffering unduly. Karl

Just come back from a long weekend at Centre Parcs. ===KEN Have fun? Certainly did. I got to take Blaise swimming for the first time and she loved it. She screamed the place down when it was time to get out of the pool though. There was also tat shops ahoy at CP and frequent visits were a real highlight of the weekend. The main toy place was called Funtastic which makes me wonder if it is accociated in any way to the company that makes KO TFs. Also got to handle this: www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/cameras/digital_slr/EOS_5D_Mark_II/Incredibly hot camera that also shoots proper HD broadcast quality video (although you have to buy add ons to use it properly as a video camera) and of course amazingly crisp stills photos. Out of my price range by light years but will certainly watch the digits go down over time. The chalet I stayed at was nice, modern and spacious; although I had 3 rough nights sleeping there getting used to a bed that isn't mine and the baby waking every now and then. George enjoyed the holiday too, and we managed to get back home intact. ===KEN

Had a bad night. By early afternoon I realised I had not been out for about 24 hours and needed some air. I thought a slow gentle walk to Sainsburys for a few things, taking in the city farm on the way, would be a sensible way to get some mild exercise.
At the farm, I went to say hello to the ducks. The duck who seemed to be in charge (The General) perched himself on top of a barrel and stared at me, unmoving. Then, behind him, many of his duck friends appeared to be engaged in multiple vigorous reproductive activity. I was forming some witty remarks about this when I was hit by bird shit from above.
I then went to say hello to the cow. It appeared to have found a large tree branch and was taking excess branches off with its teeth, seemingly stripping leaves etc off to form a stick. Then, the horned goat came over and copied what the cow was doing. I watched as the animal kingdom collaborated in making a stick weapon. Then I walked away. The cow moved to watch me as I went.
Went to Sainsburys to get what I needed (toilet roll, roothpaste, trousers) and er, bought a Transformer I didn't need because it was on sale. Sigh. Then I walked very slowly back.
Bit knackered, but a bit less so than previous jaunts. Trick seems to be to move like a snail.

If they are teaming up then we have got real problems.... several thousand years of carefully playing the species off against each other is the only reason we are out ahead. If they start pooling their technological resources then we might just be in trouble. Conserve the energy whilst you rebuild your reserves, a wise strategy. I seem to be a bit zonked this evening myself - mostly due to two working days of going pretty much flat out (two days off for the public holiday at the start of the week of course meaning that I have five days work to get done in three). Getting there though, getting there and it is nearly the weekend. Karl

I am flying HFTD Leader Starscream round the living room, making 'whoosh whoosh' noises. This is not sleep deprivation nor effects of illness. This is perfectly normal behaviour for me.
Meanwhile, Matt Trakker from M.A.S.K. is perched on WFC Megatron's shoulder. They are plotting something!

I think Nicks gone slightly loopy from all the heat while away. Got a call from his yesterday asking for my address so he could send a mystery package. He seemed frazzled which may or probably may not have been my imagination. Today said package arrived and I have no idea what to do with it. Benjamin Franklin is staring at me with a look a resignation and disappointment as I type.
Oh and the last of my hair went last night I feel freakish, my head hasn't been completely shaved for 15 years.

First day in 3 weeks that I felt more myself. Managed a slow amble around the local area this afternoon and got the bus back.
I do find myself tiring now though, so soon off to bed I think.
