Far be it from me to take attention away from Phil's bum, but I've got some rather exciting news.
My professor here in Iowa liked me so much that he invited me to do a Ph.D in Biorenewable Research and Technology here.
It pays almost the same as KAUST although I will have to pay rent and, because this is a strange and backwards country, almost as much again for medical insurance. That's the woefully inadequate medical insurance- the good stuff is about 50% more than the rent. I think if I get hit by a bus I'll ask the ambulance driver to take me to the airport instead.
On a lighter note, I'll be studying something worthwhile with good people in a (comparatively) free country in idyllic surroundings. I have been warned to beware the winters here, but if I can take the summers I can handle anything.
Anyway, if my application goes through straight away then I'll be able to start work with the beginning of the autumn (fall my ass) semester on August 22nd. Means not much time home with the family and friends but does mean I can get started doing something worthwhile*!
-Nick
*Other than Toy-fu, which should continue unabated- possibly with a larger than usual proportion of American toys than in previous years.

I find going off and doing something when I struggle to sleep helps a lot. I just pop on The Sensorites (b-dum tish!) The Sensorites is great! We must watch it together one day, chum! In other news I am walking through a wall of fatigue at the moment. Just badly need a break from work. After a pub meal this evening I could feel my attention going. Two more shifts to go then off for 10 mighty days. Nothing bad going on, just the way that all jobs go a bit radio-rental at times and require some time out! I am now in my 10th month, which is the longest period of continuous activity including Uni I've done since 2007, which is a good thing. -Ralph

Nick, that is really good. It is a fantastic opportunity and I am really pleased for you. From what I have heard about the winters in that part of the US then I would say that it might be wise to invest in a decent pair of boots at some point though.... and perhaps a nice warm scarf.... We all have our priorities, chum! A ready source of American toys was the first thing I thought of too -Nick Funny, my first thought was "An excuse to visit the Knighted Steaks!" Karl

But they include more teaching and tutoring opportunities which I think is probably a good thing careerwise overall. A good source of what a PhD is like over there is always www.phdcomics.com/comics.php

Hopefully the first proper day of thy time off will go better. Karl

So. Got up early. Weather looks dodgy with heavy rain forecast. Balls. Plan to go down park gone. City centre out of bounds due to heavy festival crowds. I would do a TRU run but public transport jiggered due to festival. Hmmmm. I can see a pub + comics afternoon coming up.
