I can understand how the initial protest might turn a little bit violent.
But as far as I can see last night was just a bunch of copycat incidents and just an excuse for some mindless violence & looting.
I had a really nice trip out last night Home -> Swindon Town Centre -> Tescos -> Swindon Town Centre -> Home. On the way down I thought I'm glad there's no trouble here. Got home and found it had all kicked off big time elsewhere.

Dear fellow countrymen: could a certain minority of you stop being stupid. Thanks. Love, Raven. #staysafe Hope nobody here's been caught up in the chaos. :\ EDIT: Also to be fair I'm getting kinda uncomfortable with all the "root cause" stuff being tossed around. I understand it might have an element of truth, but some people are starting to talk about it as though it implies in some way that there are excuses for this behaviour, and that's where gut instinct screams at me that I need to draw a line. How have government cuts got anything to do with pretending to help up an injured fellow citizen just so you can mug him?

Why hasn't Parliament been recalled? -Ralph I think that they were waiting until after the Cobra meeting to decide on the recall. Karl

Hopefully Midland Police should be stopping everything today. So its safe for us lot friday. My girlfriend says she's not coming if any riots from today onwards because she doesn't want to get scared & loose our baby - so i'm hoping that there are no more events at all. But they cleaned Bristol up quick & that was worst than central Birmingham.

Phoned a friend who lives in Nottingham earlier. She slept through the rioting which isn't that surprising as she lives quite a bit away from where the trouble was. Her sister was out at the time though and found the noise and confusion quite scary. Today it seems the damage wasn't too bad - at least compared to elsewhere.

I hope a place in space wasn't damaged in Croydon last night - that shop that burnt down looks to be close to it. It's a good shop.

EDIT: Also to be fair I'm getting kinda uncomfortable with all the "root cause" stuff being tossed around. Most significant root cause as far as I can tell: bad parenting. Plenty of poor and unemployed people in the world who don't feel the need to go around scaring and hurting innocent people and damaging property. (People who are brought up to know the difference between right and wrong.) Martin

See it did strike me that our Prime Minister was talking to the wrong people.... I mean, I know that the other lot are kind of a secret organisation and you can't just pick up the 'phone and call them, but you would think that as Prime Minister he'd be able to get a meeting with the Joes as well. Unless of course that was what Nick Clegg was doing the rest of today.... I am a bit miffed with myself at the moment. I nearly allowed this whole thing to completely derail me and had a moment where I was definitely not going down to AA. I think I am getting on a better keel at the moment and I currently feel like I am darned if I am going to let a bunch of folk who just want an excuse to break and thief things to ruin my weekend. I shall sleep on it and make my final decision in the morning, but all signs point to me being firmly installed as Toy-Fu's sales minion come the weekend. Karl

On a brighter note, the British spirit lives on; anyone else getting We're Not Afraid vibes from these? flic.kr/p/abmLRw / yfrog.com/kj5oewj #riotcleanup Also #OperationCupOfTea is finally trending on Twitter. I'll make the call Friday morning. 2 more nights should give us a clearer picture what's what and by that point we'll have men on the ground who can yay or nay it. I made the point to Karl earlier that what we really need is a good few days rain to sort it out. The ceremonial rain dance of hammering stumps into ground would do the trick. If only England were playing cricket this weekend..... Oh wait a minute they are. And at Edgebaston too! There's a result.

I find myself feeling more positive about things this morning.
The trip is of course still up in the air subject to reports from our team on the ground and taking into account anything convention organisers/Knacker/Hotel/BR might have to say.
Dinner out is, I suspect, off the menu and I guess I may not be staying that long Saturday.
As ever some assistance down from the train station might be useful!

Just organised to car share up to Brum on friday, probably for the best all around. Hoping that the car park just around the corner is safe..

I really wouldn't worry. It seems to have quietened down a lot now and police are about in force.
Still I got to go home from work early yesterday!!

If I was going on my own to AA and/or staying in another hotel I would, in all honesty, give it a miss especially after I see there were 3 murders last night. But as I will be staying at the con hotel with folk I know I shall be on the train down tomorrow.

It looks like it mainly just Moor st last night - glad they are leaving the inner area south east corner alone where my hotel is. They must be leaving the market storage area alone because its only one way in. It seems to be north west outer Birmingham getting hit worst.

Well, three people got run down by a car which is being treated as murder, rather than people stalking down the streets with knives. Oh god that was the road next to me

If I wasn't staying in the Con hotel I wouldn't be coming either. As it is I will be in the hotel, I can provision up during the daylight hours if necessary and start the day with a hearty breakfast and thus do not need to leave the hotel after early afternoon. There will be plenty of folk I know around the hotel, so I will feel fairly secure.
Needless to say I shan't be cancelling my flights or anything.

I'm staying in a hotel just around the corner from the con, so I probably won't stay for the Karaoke on Saturday, or at least not for long, so if anyone wants to escort me back to my hotel...lol
