3-day working week. Our leave year runs from September to September. I had thought the 2 days off this week (Thursday and Friday) took care of the last of it but then 5 untaken days were found which have to be disposed of sharply (partly my error, partly work error). So I now have next week off.

Nice. Always good to find you have more holiday than you expected.
I think I am going to have to take some unexpected time off fairly soon as I think I am going to need to get an engineering type in. Experimentation has shown that something is definitely wrong with my heating. Hopefully it is the pump within the boiler rather than the boiler itself (given that the boiler gets warm even if the radiators do not) - but the boiler is about twenty-five years old so I have a certain amount of trepidation about the matter.
Ah well, these are the perils of being a home owner I guess.

I may have forgotton to mention the fall on Sunday: Liz knocked into me at church, I went down and found I couldn't get back up again. I crawled to my chair, pulled myself up and sat down..... for two hours. I very rarely stay seated for that long in church - we're standing for the first hour of the service and if I'm not projecting I'm frequently the runner between the worship team and projectionist if mid service there's a sudden change of plans. No real pain, just weakness: I couldn't physically stand up.
after being carried out at the end a trip home with a piping hot pizza on my legs made things comfortable enough to walk down the path....
On Monday I had to fetch Jonathan from school (for those who've been it's by the small parade of shops near out house). 6 minute walk normally, was 12 on the way there and nearly 20 on the way back. And that was it, I did nothing else Monday.
Yesterday I went to go out. Made it 3 meters up the garden path, keeled over and crawled back to the house. Game over :-(
So today I face a choice: try to go out again during the day, or wait till tonight when I have a projecting engagement at the church?
The "W" word is looming large I fear......

That is brilliant.
I received word from ISU that I won't be able to start my Ph.D till January. Not unexpected, but disappointing nonetheless. Should hopefully give me time to finish learning to drive, but I should also try to find something to occupy my time (and maybe bring some cash in) between now and Christmas.
Tomorrow I'm off to Toys'r'us to get an application form. Ho-hum.

Got out of having my filling done today when my Dentist who also works in forensics was called away and I had to rebook.
Had a more laid back day than usual as Wednesdays are when Blaise spends the day with her Nan. Not too fond of this scorching summer revenge weather though.

Oddly enough I'm due to see my dentist at 9am tmw to have my tooth root canaled & capped in an attempt to save it......
.... however, following dinner, while brushing them trying to get some mince out of it, over 50% of the remainder of the visible bit of the tooth snapped off. No pain at all.
Good job I'm seeing the dentist tmw but I suspect it's now an OUT job.

The Lego version of the Gas Man song is fantastic.
It makes me sad that the gas man who came this morning was not a Lego Man.
He did, fortunately sort out my boiler. As I suspected the problem was the pump which, once he had gone away to source some valves that would actually fit the old design of the pipework, he was able to replace and get the system functioning better than I recall it doing in a long time.
He also had to drain out some magnetic sludge which had accumulated in the system and was probably what had damaged the pump..... I didn't know that such a black, magnetic, sludge existed in all honesty. Quite educational.
The look on the plumbers face when he was looking at the boiler was educational as well. He told me afterwards that it was well past its expected lifespan (I nodded and observed that this did not surprise me as it was twenty five years old) which made me think that in due course it might actually reach the stage of having been Grandfather's Axe-d if I keep it long enough.

We had to replace our boiler a couple of months ago and paid a kings ransom to get it all changed around. The result is space freed up in the attic where the tank used to be, a big gaping hole in the fireplace (which we need to get filled in asap now that Blaise can crawl) and a more efficient compact system in the airing cupboard.
IIRC you are entitled to £400 off discount or something if you switch to the new style of system.
British Gas also takes care of having the old boiler taken away (unless Pikeys get to it first like they did ours). The scrap is actually worth quite a bit on them and fireplaces.

Well after the thing about the thing, went to see the folks for a bit. The process of moving stuff I had in storage from there to here has finally begun after 3 years. It will take about 3 runs. Today was the removal of most of the stuff which had been lurking in a very damp garage.
Been through a few boxes. No nasty surprises in terms of damage yet. Remarkably, a pile of Marvel TF UK comics (inc the all-important #1 & #332 - if only 2 comics survived I wanted it to be them) and DW NA books seem to have survived ok.
Only one dead spider found so far.
More to open tomorrow and some procuring of sturdy storage boxes to replace the very damp boxes.
EDIT: It was also so nice weather-wise I had time to run to the park for a BBQ before the sun went down!
Relaxing with some amusingly named ales.
Off work until the 10th due to the thing about the thing. Job is fine BTW.

After a hectic week at work I came home to take advantage of the weather to sit in the garden with a good book. It was very restful and very much welcomed. It was nice to have a warm evening to enjoy the garden a little bit longer, a shame that the skies darkened after a couple of hours and the rain began to fall.
Now to put my feet up with a beer and watch an episode or two of Space:1999 I think.

Completely free day today, chilling out in central Cardiff. Had a choc milkshake lounging in the grounds of the Castle (free entry now I have my Cardiff residents' passcard), then browsed a few bookshops and picked up a few nice volumes (second-hand but never read hardbacks of Virgil's Eclogues and The Pickwick Papers, which I'd been meaning to read for a while now). Then a bottle of coke and a leisurely hour in the central library, looking at newspapers and skimming a James Bond graphic novel, then sitting at a window on the top floor looking out over the city, from where I'm logged on now.
Hope everyone else is taking it easy and not working too hard in this surprisingly warm start of October.
Martin
