He... Is... Here!
No longer are my Decepticons limited to striking from the shadows. No longer must they flee due to weight of numbers against them. Now Optimus Prime has at least an equal. He is here. He is MEGATRON!
Well, I've been after this chap for ages. I was preparing myself for him not being as good as MP Op or Starscream, and he isn't. I think MP Megatron is his own worst enemy. Turning a handgun into a decent looking, powerfull looking, robot can't be easy. In that respect I think the designers have done a good job- although I think he could have been improved, but more on that later. Considering he transforms into a handgun, his robot mode is great. He just doesn't have the same bulky, strong feel as Prime. So I had the thought, did he have to be a gun? I realise Masterpieces are G1 based, 'cos that's what us Collectors like. But maybe they should have considered a different version for MP Megs. Infiltration maybe? War Within? Or even a new mold, based on say, for the sake of argument, a battle tank or something. I don't think Masterpiece needs to duplicate G1, as MP Megs does, more give us the ultimate version of a character, in the G1 style. With that in mind I would have much preffered "Ultimate Megatron" to be a tank or Infiltration Style or something like that.
As for MP Megatron himself, I do really like him. He's far from perfect, but a damn good effort. His face sculpt in particular is excellant. Not an enraged expression, but one of tyranical consideration and merciless. How he should look. A scheming, intelligent, evil genius. Articulation wise he's ok but not great, could, should, have been much beter. I find the fact his gun is stuck on the front aspect of his fore-arm, without the ability to be shifted onto the lateral aspect, constricting interms of poses. He's very unsteady and feels fragile in many respects. I enjoy a challenging transformation, and you certainly get it with MP Megs, however I was so afraid of snapping something it took me the best part of 50 mins to complete transformation to gun and then back to robot.
So all in all I am pleased. He looks great, when posed right. But he could have been better, and he's made me reconsider what I want in a Masterpiece toy.
