At the funeral yesterday we learned that my nan had an estranged brother and he made contact with us. He wants to meet with my mum and her sisters to add to the family trees he's been working on (and to tell them more about heir mother's pretty secret past)

Can't wait to see Phantom Menace shelf-warming again. Especially as I still see ep1 toys shelfwarming to this day! A bin line? I must know more. In other news, I am completely cream crackered and another mad day looms large. All I want to do is couch pilot. -Ralph I prescribe a weekend with the Key To Time

Weighing up whether to fit in a cinema trip this evening or not. Was planning one but by lunchtime I was starting to consider whether or not I wanted to head straight home and slump down on the sofa with Ribos Operations eps 3 & 4. Shall see how I feel when I make my escape from the office this evening.
As I have Captain America still to watch on DVD I am planning to plonk myself down this weekend for a Supersoldiers evening - Cap backed up by Gi Joe: RoC should go down nicely.

Whew! What a week! It began with work 'do' number 1 last Friday, which didn't give me a hangover at all since it began at 12 and I bailed out around 6.30. Then a train trip down to Torquay on the Saturday for two nights with my favourite aunt, cousin and cousin's two little girls (3 and 5 years old, one my god-daughter) which basically meant playing with them for two days straight which was fine by me as they are funny. Also included family 'do' number 2. Then a train back to Cardiff on Monday, and a four-day week at work. Wednesday was a pain as I had a headache all day from work 'do' number 2. You know about that. (Note to self: Drinking from 12 to 6 good, drinking from 7.30 to 11.30 bad.) Recovered in time to finish all my loose ends at work before work 'do' number 3 this afternoon from 3.30 to 7.30, which was very good. (Note to self: drinking from 3.30 to 7.30 OK so long as you also have lots of water.)
Now I am OFF WORK until 3 January! It hasn't sunk in yet, but I will no doubt disconnect properly over the next few days. Looking forward to finishing 3 books I'm reading (probably spending a fair bit of time on the top floor of the central library looking down upon scurrying shoppers), seeing Sherlock Holmes 2 and Mission: Impossible 4, taking some nice walks in the nature reserve and spending four or five days in Bristol with my folks over Christmas and Boxing Day.
Hope you all manage to unwind and have fun in your own ways.
Martin

I'm impressed, you're still able to multitask enough to post both here and on Twitter.

It would be fair to say that Ralph has been in several places.., some of them simultaneous and several of them whilst I have been returning to Planet Falkirk...

Karl, are you responsible for Ralph having a drink? Only in the sense that I joined him in the pub yesterday evening. I'd not go so far as to say that I am in the business of making decisions for others as such... Karl

Here's what happened. Had planned to go to cinema but brain was destroyed by work and did not feel I had the concentration for a film. So I thought a couple of pints if Karl was still about might be a good idea. This seemed to go fine but I forgot to order some dinner. Then Karl ordered me to stop drinking, I felt the call for chicken pakora and it all went a bit hazy.

Yes, I forgot about food as well - although I did have a fair-sized lunch in me it being Friday which is my "treat myself to steak pastie and potato wedges" day. You seemed fairly ok when we parted ways to be honest. (Possibly better than me I thought). Karl

Up early to give the flat a going over ahead of the quarterly flat inspection tomorrow. Took far less time than I thought (it's kept in decent nick anyway). Last time I got a written warning because I dared to leave crumbs from breakfast. What wankery awaits me this time? Honestly, inspections should be to check everything is ok and that the customer (ie the tenant) is happy, not to make sure the tenant pretends he lives in a show home!
Hope to treat myself to a pub dinner later. A measure of how run down I am is that I fell asleep circa 8pm on a Saturday night! Two more weeks of work before I have one off. Can't come soon enough. This time of year is just mental for my line of work, not helped by other services being off or under-staffed.

Bless you, Doc'.
My beard needs a trim. Any Mother-Hubbers have advice on methods of trim-ment?
(Beard's days may be numbered, my friends. I love it. But Mrs Shockers does not like how it feels. Credit to her, she has tried to like how it feels (golly, that sound rude!), but she cannot endure. It may go after the winterist of months).

Took advantage of the good weather today and headed out for a long walk in the frosty conditions this morning. Lovely to wander along the banks of the frozen canal - we have an ice layer thick enough to bounce small stones from again this year - and feel the ground crunching underfoot.
I did get a bit of a fright when I was approaching the Roman fort - there was an earsplitting series of cracks from the frozen marshy land ahead of me which sounded like a fair-sized creature crashing through the ice. After a few seconds of listening, and then moving carefully ahead I worked out what was going on - the steadily rising sun was starting to fall on the frozen surface, formerly sheltered by the various tree trunks rising from it and between that and the retreat of the water level under the ice it was fracturing. It was quite a spectacular sound all told.
Spent the rest of the morning doing the last of my major pre-christmas clean the kitchen completes matters and means that my house is all up to date and I don't need to worry about it for a while. Then I sat down to wrap presents, write Christmas cards and watch movies. A reasonable way to spend the afternoon methinks.

There's a slightly smaller lake of ice across the road from the house here. There were some kids trying to slide on it as I was walking up to Castlemilk to check the Co-op for tins of Mars Celebrations since the Croftfoot branch was out. Of the three available, Celebrations seems to be by far the most popular or least supplied, while Cadbury's Roses are hard to find but each shop still had a couple of tins and Nestle's Quality Street was still present in mountainous piles. Go fig.
