Still waiting for news from Iowa State. No word. Term starts in 7 days. Most likely hung out to dry.

No chance of a relaxing week off after all. Grandfather died. Just found out. Complicated feelings.

Some large trees from a neighbour's garden came down at my folk's house, catching some guttering, blocking the back door and obliterating the shed. A narrow escape.

Indeed. Condolences to you and your family, Ralph. I hope he had a good run. Glad to hear your folks emerged unharmed from the cataclysmic weather.
Got this message from ISU today: "The Admissions Committee in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University has approved your application for admission. Currently we are verifying with the Graduate Admissions Office if it is possible for you to start an assistantship in January or if you will need to wait until Summer or Fall.
As soon as we have a decision from the Graduate Admissions Office, we will notify you."
So... yeah. At least they're back in contact.

Due to the weather I am stranded in Falkirk today, thanks to Karl for extending his hospitality for a further day.

Sorry to hear about your family troubles Ralph.
Good news Nick, well I guess it is.
Day off and much needed lie in this morning. back at work tomorrow. It's all slightly stressful right now. I'm only still working into the new year as cover for someone whose wife will give birth in the next few days so I have to be around in case he cant make it in on short notice.
Also the graphics card on the computer has burnt out so having to rely on the onboard one which is fine for simple stuff but is causing the odd problems that I don't like and limiting me to one screen which makes work very difficult.

Oh hey yay Nick! Shame they're dragging their feet so much over it, crikey! Oh, it's fine. The new term doesn't start for 5 days, and it only takes a week to get a visa once you have an appointment that you can only apply for once you have a letter of approval posted out... huh. Guess if they say yes I'll be missing the first few days of classes. -Nick

Bad start to the day as we couldn't find the top to Jonathan's drinks bottle for school. Stressed parents. Top discovered 3 hours later inside the lid attached to the bottle.
This is Liz's college day so I take Jonathan to school. Decided against breaking out my new item of equipment, of which more when it does make it's debut, but after I'd dropped him I (shock horror) paid for the bus (45 mins before I could use my pass) and headed down to ASDA. Best £1.20 I've spent in a long time, can't remember the last time I got out by myself.
So having replenished supplies of both mint & camomile teas and Lemon squash, *and* got rechargeable batteries for Jonathan's leap pad I'm home, bathed and all set up for a day's writing. I've got 2 1/2 Doctor Who episodes to write up and a TF review to finish.
Incidentally I now know why TWO bank cards have failed due to damaged chips: I have a three part fold out wallet. Bank cards slot in the centre, change purse on one of the outers..... with a diagonally mounted strip. If the card goes in the front of the change purse (which it does) and is face up (which it is) the Zipper is impacting on the chip (depending if opened or closed and which way up the card is!)

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather Ralph - my condolences.
After Andy departed from here this morning, now that the trains are running again, the heavens opened. No wind to speak of but torrential rain started a few seconds after I got back home with my shopping and continued for the remainder of the day. Faced with that prospect I decided to stay firmly inside. So I spent the day doing some housekeeping tasks - my new DVD storage-box allowing me to shed another enormous pile of amray cases and free up and entire shelf. (This has been colonised temporarily by an army of Doctor Who mini-figures and a cadre of Lego Mini-figs. I haven't the heart to tell them yet that they will have to move). I have also done some lounging around watching DVDs and some reading.
Back to work tomorrow, but on the bright side it will be a nice short week.
Nick, good to hear that there is at least some sign of movement from ISU. I shall keep my digits crossed for you.
Karl

Got home okay, power napped as much as I could ahead of work. Wasn't the worst day, but could have done with another day of vegging.
Weekend allocated for putting things in the loft and in recycling, some space reclamation to be done, followed by some proper drawing.
Huzzah!

sorry to hear of your grandad's passing Ralph. Winds terrible here, the bench has been flying round the garden all night keeping Elliot (and us) awake. woke up to find next door's guttering on the lawn.

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather, Doc'.
Mrs Shocker's Grandmother's funeral tomorrow, she passed away boxing day morning. Wasn't entirely unexpected, she had been very poorly. She's the last of that generation in both our families, I lost all my Grandparents years ago. Feels alittle strange to us both, feel like our generation has 'moved up one'. The passage of time's a funny thing.
On a personal note, I tried on my very little worn suite (my wedding suite, infact) yesterday in preparation for the funeral. Went to a wedding last autum and it was a little tight. This time I couldn't even get the mother-freakin' zipper up! Dear God! Usually I don't give a stuff about weight etc, so long as I can run through a shopping center with all my bags and defib at work looking like a hero with out being toooo out of breath. But not even being able to zip up my damn trousers?! Detox! Diet! Where's my Lentil cook book?!

When I got to work today I found that the inside coat pocket I keep my phone and wallet in was unzipped and hanging open. My wallet is heavy with assorted ancient loyalty cards and was still present, but there's no sign of my phone. It was just a bargain bucket Nokia, but it's a pain in the ass to have to go and buy a new one then get all my numbers back. Called it and it rang out. Will try again every day then, if nobody replies by Sunday (by which time the battery will be flat) I'll go buy a new one.
UPDATE: My dad called my number and got no reply about two hours ago. Two minutes ago it called back, just for a second. We rang back, but nobody picked up. Mysterious, no?

I blame the Ewoks. Something needs to be done about them. I've now seen how Ewoks fight when they have to... I'm not volunteering to take them on. First day back at work has been completed. The ring of the alarm at 06:30 was not welcomed entirely with joy.... My brain currently feels somewhat kneaded. Ah well - just one day left of the working week, followed by a Dental checkup. Then I don't have to go anywhere if I don't want to. On the other hand, I still would like to see MI:4 and one or two other things. So perhaps a cinema odyssey might be on the cards. Karl

Just got back home. Laptop has apparently not quite died yet while I was away; still using 2nd monitor to be able to see what I'm doing though. Have been picking out possible candidates for replacement laptop. Hopefully will arrive at a decision by next Monday. Definitely plan to have one by the end of January if all else fails.
Catching up on what I've missed at various corners of the intarwebz is always fun after an absence.
In hindsight 2011 wasn't exactly the best year ever. I can only hope 2012 will turn out to be better.

Working week is done.
Tea and relaxation for the rest of tonight. Some house tidying tomorrow and the putting up in the loft of things. Freeing up some much needed space, then some drawing and if we can avoid apocalyptic weather Susie will get out for two long walks.
