An appeal to my sci fi loving friends: what's the earliest example of a sailing ship in space you can think of? I know Star Fleet's The Skull (1982 <technically 1980>) beats Doctor Who's Enlightenment race (1983) but I very much suspect The Skull wasn't the first. Any offers?
Other later examples also gratefully received.
Print or TV/Film acceptable!

I am guessing you mean ships that use actual sails and not something like Space Battleship Yamato?

Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors had one, kinda. I forget the name.... and I suspect it was later too.
<edit>The Pride Of The Skies II, apparently, and it was from 1985.

Are you only talking about actual "wet" ocean sailing ships?
Because if you were talking about vessels that use solar sails for propulsion then Clarke's "Sunjammer" is from the early 1960's, but I'm not sure if that fits your definition of "Sailing ship".
I'm sure that there is a very early (1800's) story that features someone going to the moon by harnessing birds to an ocean-going ship though, but I cannot recall the title of it at the moment.
