Y'know, I was tempted to pick up the Takara one as I saw it regularly in Singapore. I might pick this up. Not because of any love for the character- I just think it looks gloriously bonkers.

Didn't go for Acid Storm, the green was just too garish, but this one, weeell, if it was £50 in a local TRU here like Acid Storm is now I'd probably go for it. The yellow is nice.

Honestly, the colour scheme has actually rather grown on me. It looks a lot like some of the more flamboyant display schemes -after all, the real world has given us such unexpected sights as a Signal Orange F16. Actually, he makes a good stablemate to Thundercracker, who has strong similarities in colour choice to the JASDF Blue Impulse team (and I'm still kicking myself it took me so long to get that connection - especially given that his diaclone name "Jet Robot Acrobat Type" basically hangs the lampshade on it).

£5 less than Acid Storm started at. I'm anxious to see some proper photos of this one. That paint job in the initial picture does make it look good. Much better than the Takara one.
Yes. Think I'm going for this one. Criminal though we get this and Acid Storm but not Thundercracker.

Maybe if Toysaurus reduce it. And there's a 20% off weekend. Maybe then I'll think about getting it.
Still missing an actual Masterpiece Starscream, though. So maybe I should focus on that. Like that's ever going to happen...

I like how image reveals are still sometimes grainy like 10 years ago. Nostalgia!

Those colours don't look quite like the first photo, if the first one was even of this version. I was hoping for a dirty yellow/orange. Not bright yellow. Hard to tell from that screen shot though. Hmm. Back on the fence again. Need to see it.
I'm still surprised this even exists. Acid Storm had such a lukewarm reception both sides of the pond and this will be the fourth use of the reworked mould in the space of what, three years?

I think the early photos were just of a custom after someone at Hasbro/TRU had done a quick internet search. This looks like being what will be released.
Despite peoples moans about why Thundercracker instead of Starscream? Why Acid Storm instead of Starscream? and just general whyness?, the previous 2 releases seem to have sold well enough. Thundercracker sold out and Acid Storm I assume has sold well enough that TRU are happy to keep restocking.
Infact I kind of suspect TRU dont see it as MP TC or Acid Storm, but just as MP strike plane and instead of restocking another wave of Thundercrackers every 6-9 months they get another MP Plane wave this time in yellow, next time in red or black.
Eventually when they dont think they can sell any more MP Planes we'll get a Starscream version of MP Plane, because the name recognition will be enough to sell that final wave.
As for Sunstorm, I don't know that I am that bothered, but I suspect that brown head will turn out to be bronze/dark gold. And that would save me some time and effort when painting AMTC and avoid lots of future paint scraping during transformation.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, the more masterpieces the better as far as I'm concerned. You're right, the plane mould is one that can legitimately be wheeled out over and over as different characters purely as cheap repaints. None of the others have that resaleability without remoulding. Evidenced I think by YOTH Prime's reception.
Would have been nice though if we actually had got Thundercracker here. He's still on my shopping list. Just took so long for MP-10 to appear we were already warming up for Soundwave after that.

Has that mould been used as Skywarp yet?
|
|
|
Post by Pinwig on May 29, 2014 21:05:22 GMT
No. Skywarp is still on the old mould, US and Japanese versions.
I don't mind that actually, since Crazy mentioned the sword/scabbard idea for the hip kibble, having that element of variety in the lineup is nice.
To my mind now if they really want to keep going with that mould we need some remoulding on the wings for the cone heads. Thrust would be great. However that would also make the decepticon Masterpiece lineup waaay too similar. They'd start looking like vehicon clones. Takara need to move on to the '85 characters. We need insecticons. But I don't see that happening while they're focused on the cars.

If the planes were around 25% smaller I would happily buy loads of them, as it is I have 4 and that already feels like too many. In comparison I have 4 of the lambor and 3 of the Fairlady mould and am quite happy with those and can see myself buying more of them if the right repaint came along.

Useful comparison. Can't get this chap out of the back of my mind. I really thought the Takara one (left) was more orange. I can't decide from these two which is betterer.

Both make my eyes bleed to be honest, but I'd prob' go left. Wait, do I mean right? Your left or my left? I get left and right confused... No seriously I do, it's like a condition. Black head, black headed one I'd go for.

Hmm... I prefer the one on the left, but if I see the one on the right going cheap I might have to nab it. Acid Storm is so absurd just looking at him makes me happy. I hope they do a purple one next.

I'm not sure how both can have white hands unless they have their very own sprue, but I think I prefer the Hasbro bronze headed one. But would have liked it to have the white missile launchers and the red and white paint apps from the main wings of the Takara version.

Well this is odd. Doing my usual TRU check to see if Evolutions Prime has appeared yet I spy Sunstorm is now on there. Unavailable yet, but the £70 they announced it would be. So why did a cheaper new mould like Prowl get shelved and yet another expensive seeker repaint get the green light? The only reason I can think of is that this one is a Hasbro original release and not a reissue of the Takara one. As the Takara was an exclusive there'd have been less importing going on.

Just got around to opening Sunstorm. Freakin ell. Er glow in the dark parts and a bizarre fire deco that do not show up in photos at all. Bit of a surprise that.
On and the leg extending issue that seems to plague the mould has gotten worse. After a long time exerting way to much force they finally pulled down and I thought my problems had ended but then I tried transforming back to jet mode and I had to apply almost as much pressure retracting them. So much in fact that when it finally went I trapped my finger. I mean fully trapped, in agony, thankfully my finger prevented the leg locking back in to place so I could pull it down and free my finger. If it had managed to lock in to place I seriously would have had to smash the fecker apart.
So aside from finger death trap, it actually looks pretty good.

Not freed mine yet, he's on the list. However I will now be sure to wear gloves while transforming him.
I like the smaller box size though. Wish all of the larger Masterpieces were in tidier boxes like this one. Soundwave's was ridiculous.
