Well, Scourge is the best one in many ways. While not the first black repaint, he was the one that set the trope of "evil black clone" that every nemesis prime follows. He was the first and only one to appear in a show. And it maaaaaassively helps that he uses a toy that the actual optimus didn't. So he wasn't straight up "Optimus, but black." But, not only was he one of the only ones to have a personality, his character wasn't based around "I'm Optimus, but eeeeeeviiiiiil!" As far as plot goes, being an evil optimus clone was used exclusively to explain why he looks like Optimus
As for toys, he was the most visually interesting. Almost all black repaints that try to ape his deco, most fail because they use G1 Optimus as it's base, which changes the color profiles, leaves out the grey, and has the trailer which is gorgeous.
But back then I was real weird with repaints. I'd choose the one I liked most (if that's an option), and would pass up repaints if I had the original. (I already have Laserrod Optimus, I don't see a need for Scourge.) I did get the Hero redeco to own the character (since I didn't have that mold), but passed on Bludgeon for the same reason I skipped Scourge.

We missed out on the full size Scourge here, was a TRU exclusive in the US. The Megas were also VERY hard to find here, to the point I'm not 100% sure they came out. Galvatron didn't. The deluxe was the car brothers in w1, Build team and Mega Octane in w2, a defacto store exclusive, and super car bros in w3! I think the Basic/Spychangers 2 packs was about the only size we got everything..... and then the last wave with the Combaticons shelf warmed because thee were no Mega Octanes to be found!
They were not fun times!

Does Black Lio Convoy count as an evil Optimus Prime black redeco? That was in the BWII cartoon and uses the black/grey/teal colour scheme.

I've never been that fond of Laser Prime - see tmukhub.proboards.com/post/33218/thread - but Scourge has always felt the better version. Should be called Mega Octane though, for reasons outlined at length previously. I wouldn't say no to a full size RiD Scourge but they're not cheap now! I've got the Spychanger and Destructicon versions - both fab - and from other ranges<checks> Armada Nemesis Prime
T30 Nemesis Prime
GDO Legends Motormouth (effectively Legends/Legion Nemesis Prime)
Unite Warriors Grand Scourge
Legends Nemesis Prime (RTS Laser Rod repaint)
Legends Nemesis Prime (TR Voyager Op repaint)
POTP Nemesis Prime (in the Fu pile)
Siege Japanese Nemesis Prime
Netflix Nemesis Prime I am a bit of a sucker for the evil black Optimus thing.

The Laser Rod Prime mould has leg articulation. I assume Scourge is the same? Yes, sorry, he does. He's got hips that swing the legs out but not forward/back, and knees. So he can do a straight stand up or an A if you don't have his feet flat. It's not a complaint, just an observation that if he had forward movement in the legs and ankle tilts his articulation would be as good as a current Generations toy. Everything else about him is ten times better than a modern toy.

I remember that experience when I got Laser Rod Prime and didn't know that was going to happen. My mind imploded. I have indeed imploded. This is INSANE. I've just discovered the disc launcher is on a ratchet and can rotate in any direction. Multi disc fire! Missile launcher on a ball joint so it has complete freedom of movement. Such a simple idea - why does no one do that now!? Man, the Autobots are FUCKED when they meet this. So this is a mid-nineties toy mould from the G2 era, I'm just thinking even RiD Optimus doesn't have anywhere near the features this does. His trailer base is nothing on this one.

This is why that Prime mould is second only to the 84 one for me. Great chunky robot and a trailer chock full of action features.

Laser Rod Prime was THE Optimus Prime toy for a very long time back in the day. Certainly right through the Beast era.

We missed out on the full size Scourge here, was a TRU exclusive in the US. Despite sending an agent to the US I also missed out on one due to him just staying on shelves for very long, or so it seemed. I don't usually go in for the repaints, but I'd completely missed out on... well, all of G2 the first time around due to being the wrong age, so I was very much after this one, and very disappointed when I was unable to get it. It was a relief that Takara did a straight up G2 reissue a few years later. And then of course there's the Goat version, which is so very good, and which I don't regret picking up from ToyFu in August at all. Great toys, all of him.

All my toys that were in Car Robots came from that line in Japan but I think I passed on Black Convoy and Galvatron. And the Beast Predacons though I sorted that one later! I got Scourge from a US contact as well as a lot of the other non UK distributed toys - Bike vs Pack, Autobot Vehicon 3 pack, Car vs Jet vs packs, Bruticus (Cerberus), Megabolt Megatron, Cryotek and John Cullen's Monkey. Almost all of them went in the pre wedding sale though I've since retrieved the Car/Jet vs packs and acquired the Predacons & Sky Byte. Would LOVE to get a Megabolt again. Completism means I want the RiD Dinobots - missing from the BW Generations book - and I'd *really* like Yellow Landfull and Urban Camo Ruination. I also want Landfill's Universe Devastator repaint But I think Scourge may have worked it's way to the top of the RiD wants list. I own: Super Fire Convoy & God Magnus
Car Brothers
Build King
JRX
All the Spychangers original decos
Skid-Z / Wind Sheer & Tow-Line / Skyfire
Clear Wrecker Hook & Indy Heat
Storm Jet
Brave Maximus
RiD Megatron
Sky Byte
Predacon 3 Pack
Ruination Obsidian
Destructicons Scourge & Bludgeon
Dreadwind & Smokejumper You can see the seeds for Universe being sown as the US line progresses and the seeds of the US line's repaint phase is present in the original Car Robots.... which is one of the reasons I'm cross about Universe missing out in the BW Generations book! If you don't have it though, BUY IT NOW! If all goes to plan we'll hit RiD in the Catalogue poll in November/December 2022 and spend four months there!

I was lucky to be spending a semester in the US in 2002. Meaning I had free access to most of the later RID line. Im still not sure exactly how I got it all home.

RID is one of those instances that I mentioned before, in that the toys are superb and well made, but the cartoon just puts me off them. Instead of appreciating the wonderful designs, I just hear silly annoying voices coming from them.
It's wrong, I know.

There are still some gaps in my collection though. I dont think Ive ever owned the Predacon TM2 repaint 3 pack, owing to my never having been a TM2 fan and not seeing the cartoon tilllong after the toys stopped being sold.
Walgreens (or maybe KB) had the Ruination limbs, but Mega Octane. The 4 limbs are still sat unopened somewhere.
I dont know why I didnt get the flipchangers. Maybe they werent out at the time or maybe I still wasnt overly bothered about repaints if I had the originals, I think that applies to some of the other repaints in the line. Or maybe I did buy them and never opened them so I've forgotten about them.
Brave Max. I regret not getting the £100 Brave Maxs. I have two junker Braves but its not the same.

I did go to the US in 2003 and 2004 so how I didn't end up with at least a few Universe toys is a mystery. One that really annoys me.
