Dry Run was what I was thinking of. And Twintwist in Time Wars. Fort Max and friends more removed their heads, and I'm sure I read a Grimgrams or Dreadtidings were the process was described, indicating it's ok to disconnect and remove one's head, but to have it simply ripped or chopped off, I dunno, isn't. Yeah, Highbrow said as much in the story in the annual when he pulled Scorp's head off without the proper mental preparation and it knocked him out. Logic would say Twin Twist may have been reparable, but the writing and artwork suggested it was intended to be a death, and he may have been sucked up into the rift anyway. Martin

Shocks is right about the letter response. We did that recently. Or I put it in a write up.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #202...and on the letters' page, Dreadwind explains to David Matthews of Greystones that there is a difference between ripping the head off a Transformer, ala Cyclonus's death, and carefully disconnecting it with a series of mental commands, ala Fortress Maximus on Nebulos.

How can Cloudburst have his head chopped off and be repaired easily enough and is fine, whereas -I'd say usually - a Transformer having his head chopped off is portrayed as being terminal? No, it's normally fine to take a TF's head off. I give you: In Budiansky: Prime's head as Shockwave's prisoner in the early US issues. Circuit-Breaker putting the heads of Skids, the Aerialbots, Blaster and co. on her trophy wall. Fort Max and co. taking their heads off to show their peaceful intentions. In Furman: Straxus's head living on after Blaster destroys the rest of him on the Space Bridge. Highbrow ripping Scorponok's head off in the 1989 annual. It was just in 'Dry Run' when Megatron ripped Cyclonus's head off that the normal rules of Transformers were suspended for the sake of dramatic effect. Cyclonus's weaknesses are missing from his TFU entry: www.ntfa.net/universe/english/index.php?act=view&char=CyclonusIn my opinion, they would read: "Cyclonus has a design flaw which means that if his head comes off, it causes a power surge that somehow kills him." Martin I'd be inclined to say, that Cyclonus' brain module probably corrupted and killed him. The shock of Megatron trying to kill him 20 years before he is created, coupled with the harm that forcibly removing his head did probably did the damage. Andrew

So... it's a bit like pulling a memory stick from your computer without clicking 'eject' first. You're taking a chance with your data.

Good analogy that. I also think it's reasonable as these are robots with moving parts that there are physical connections that need to separate safely. Otherwise their heads would fall off if they bent over. Like how Dai-X's brain module connects and locks in place - rip that off and it'll break, but disconnect safely and the brain can exist inside the head.
I know cartoon lore is frowned on in these parts, but remember Face of Nijika too.

There was also the beheading of one of Rodimus' guards by Deaths Head in issue 133. The exact same issue as when Fort Max removes his head with no harm being done. (I know the letters page tried to explain this discrepancy of course).
Also, wasn't there a planned cover to the US issue of this (with Cloudburst's severed head) that wasn't given the green light - it had to show it still attached instead as it would be too gruesome? That rule couldn't have applied to the UK.

I wonder what else Cybertronians can detach and drop off. Six-gun would seem to be the most extreme example of a component-based G1 character. Metroplex's TF Universe profile notes that Six-gun had a distinct mind and personality that mirrors (and is mentally linked to) Metroplex, Scamper and Slammer. Could Six-gun's consciousness spread across the six items of weaponry, I wonder? I've always been disappointed that Flywheel's duocon heritage was ignored in the Marvel UK series. The artist seemed to treat him as a triple changer, only showing one alt-mode at a time.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #221 Wanted: Galvatron - Dead or Alive - Part 1a: Reprinted from #113Survivors! - Part 3: While the Autobots take on the limbo creatures, Skids learns that they are fashioned from dreams in which he commanded them. They try to persuade him to join them, but he refuses. Broadside's reckless shooting is tempered by Inferno as the battle goes on inside the nuclear facility and Springer decides the only thing they can do is call in the Decepticons for help. Elsewhere, The A-Z covers Onslaught and Outback; on the letters' page, Hi-Test is renamed Hi-Chest by Matthew Roberts of Penrhynside; in Action Force, Raptor tries to persuade everyone that dressing like a bird doesn't make him look stupid; and Semi-Automatic Steve is called fat by Colin's mum. Outrageous.

I remember hating this issue - first we lost colour on one strip - then the strip in colour is a boring old reprint!

I did!
I only got it sporadically up until #70, but from #71 until the very end I had it reserved at the local newsagents.
